It's funny, but we didn't choose our glass tile backsplash because it was popular, or even trendy (didn't realize it was!). It just "went" with our (contemporary) style and it worked beautifully with all the elements that made up our kitchen--our flat panel/slab door (light cherry) cabinets, our soft black granite, SS appliances and sink, and satin nickel, SS, and chrome accessories. It had a certain something that made it special, without overwhelming everything else we'd chosen, which is exactly what we'd wanted for our backsplash. In fact, when I first saw the sample boards in the store, I thought it had an almost retro, late 60's/70's mod look!

We put a glass mosaic above our range that was thin like that. We were doing marble subway tile everywhere else and the thicknesses didn't match up. I don't know the specifics I would have to ask my tile guy, but I do know that we replaced the drywall and put in cement board over the range which is thicker and then I think he built it up just a little with grout. It looks great and is all even. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

The floor is the same in the photo as well. I am going with a dark countertop called tan/black. What should I paint the walls not covered in backsplash, and how dark can i go on the cabinets. The kitchen is actually going to be very similar to the pic except the cabinets and countertop. Any help woul be appreciated. I left the edges of my glass tiles exposed in both by master bathroom and the kitchen backsplash in my old house.The first time I did it I was worried it would look weird. But it looks great! Glass tiles don't have an "unfinished" edge like glazed ones do. Just grout that edge carefully, and run a bead of caulk along it, cleaning it up well so that all it does is fill in any grout lines that might be gapping in from the edges. One other thing.... Is it possible for you to remove the hood and tile up behind it? If not, make sure that you caulk the HECK out of the top edge where it meets the hood. I didn't pay close enough attention to that edge in my old house, and over the years, grease (from the air going up the hood) dripped down behind the tiles. Since they were translucent, you could see the stain, and it was impossible to clean.
