I think it's a wonderful idea. I'm not crazy about having my pictures taken - my vision of myself is about 30 years younger and 60 pounds lighter! - but with one of my quilts in my hands I think I would be proud to have a picture taken. I'm going to have to think about this. It would be easy to make a gift card to go with the quilt.

Annie, that would make a great quilt for a formal portrait. Do you still have it? I love that you are smiling. When I had my formal picture taken, I was in a serious mode, not a look that would make a child warm to quilting. It makes me smile now for that and my one and only perm.

I see by the date on the photograph that it was taken about six years after I finished that quilt, so I guess I was just pretending to quilt.

I think it's an interesting idea. I have pictures of all the quilts I've made and a few pictures of me, but none together. I guess maybe it's because I'm usually taking the pictures!

Carol--the quilt I'm in front of was a client's quilt and was mailed to her the day after the picture was taken. I'll have to get my daughter to take my picture one the next times I'm demo-ing. I'll be in full period costume next weekend at a local historical site, so that might be the perfect time to try to get a picture of me doing the three things I love best: quilting, using a treadle sewing machine, and talking about it!

Karen, I hope you get a larger version posted--I want to see that quilt closer up. Actually, I think what you have there would be classifies as a snapshot, not a portrait.

This is the scenerio as I see it. You get someone to take a picture of you sitting in a favorite spot (inside or out) with your quilt spread over your lap or hung behind you. Blow it up to an 8x12 or however big you want it, frame it and display it prominently in your sewing room.

Okay, I know not that many of us have a separate sewing or quilting room, but there must be some wall that deserves to spotlight you and your love of quilts. I have decided to put mine in the computer/guest room. But anywhere that will make you smile and inspire you while you do life's chores would be good.

I really like this idea of a formal quilt portrait. I've been thinking about it since you first posted this and I plan to do one with one of my favorite large quilts behind me and a smaller quilt over my lap as if I was working on it.
Of course I'll also be wearing jewelry I made! LOL: if it's not one addiction, it's another, right?

For those of you who make quilts on commission, getting a portrait made is an even better idea. Use the photo to have postcards made up that you can send to local galleries or stores that sell hand-made items. It could be a great marketing tool!

Annie, that sounds neat. I love period movies in part for the costumes. I love old photographs for that reason too.

I have recently been scanning old family photographs into the computer, so I can say that there are no old family portraits that have quilts in them. Of course, my side of the family were not quilters. Still, the old family photos from my husband's side (which were quilters) don't have any quilts in them either. I suppose that only in well-to-do families where fine needlework might be considered appropriate as a sign of wealth would it be included in a formal picture.

The few formal photographs in my family were taken at a photographer's studio where he used his own props and backdrops.

There's a question: Does anyone on the forum have an old photo with a quilt in it?

I had a friend take a picture of me at a quilting demo this weekend. I like it a lot better than the previous shot I posted. The costume is Civil War complete with hoop.

Love the dress and Wow, the Pinecone quilt. It looks like you used the series of borders design, but your series is so much more interesting than many that I have seen. Carole

Carole--It's a round robin. I made the center medallion and 5 friends added the borders. You can see more information on it in the "Displaying Quilts" topic. I just got it hung up yesterday!
