Hans Wegner dining set needs refinishing... what would you do?
Comments (13)My kids were raised with wood tables....without glass tops. As a result they know that you don't color on the table top and don't leave your glass on the table, unless it's on a coaster or a map. They learned to put down newspaper if you were going to paint your model there or do a glue and glitter project. My daughter's kids do the same...but my son's wife grew up in a "plastic cloth on the table" and "foil under the candle sticks" family, so their kitchen table is a mess....mostly with water rings. The dishwasher won't hurt your silver....and doesn't change the way it looks. What do the kids do to that table? Set a glass on it? Have some big plastic coasters.....that go to the table when a glass does. Do you eat on the table without a placemat? lay the dishes directly on the table? Learn to use your table not abuse it. Comments (12)I love 30s Jacobean. My parents had a dining set done of it. The old styles............if you hang on long enough, they come back in vogue. I thought that hutch didn't look right. What a shame they butchered the legs off the china cabinet, and I suspect they sawed off part or all of the legs on the sideboard, too to make it low enough to accommodate settign the china cabinet on top of it. So they took a traditional three piece set and turned it into two. The thing is those sorts of things often happen to 'old furniture' before it's hit the point of vintage and when it's gone, it's gone forever. It's still a nice set however. Actually the fancy work over the glass in the china cupboard isn't that hard to redo. It's held into place by what amounts to fancy quarter round. I've popped the quarter round off my china cupboard door and removed mine to clean it up and get at the glass....See MoreWillette Dining room set needs help, should I refinish?
Comments (1)I am always a supporter of "restoration" instead or "refinishing" If you strip a finish and apply a new finish etc it looks like a new table and ruins the wood's natural patina. This is what they mean by discouraging refinishing. My suggestion would to research furniture restoration techniques to determine what your problem may be. It is probably a wax finish. There are many articles on repairing water damage on wax finishes. You could also search for "furniture restoration or repair" in your area to consult a professional....See MorePlease help me 'refinish' my dining room table
Comments (33)Update: After doing more research on spar varnish and finding the post I will refer to below, I went to my local paint store and had a long talk with the owner about my project. I decided to go with minwax semigloss clear polyurethane and I was advised to use a lambswool device to apply the poly. Then I came home and read your recent posts, Richard - and yes, product I was talking of (the spar varnish) is a quality product but after more reading I just didn't feel right about using it on this table. I also found this thread on "woodjocks" website and found the discussion leading me towards poly even more. http://lumberjocks.com/topics/2565 So, I have a applied one coat of poly with the wool device. I am not sure how I feel about this wool idea - it seems to leave lint behind? I am thinking of switching to a brush, or to disposable foam brushes for the next 3 coats. Any advice on how to proceed from here onto my last coats of poly (even just some encouragement) is appreciated. I'm not sure how I like the semigloss finish - its nice, but I hope it will be waterproof and repellant to dinner sauces, wine, etc. I am also feeling concerned about my work environment. I am working in a free standing garage and the temps are supposed to dip down into 40s this week at night. Will that be a problem in between dry coats of poly? Here is a link that might be useful: thread on spar varnish I found...See Moretuesday_2008
