Willette Dining set help, refinish?
Comments (6)Angel, when you decide on the best way to preserve the value, as well as make it beautiful again, please come back and share. I purchased a cherry Willet sideboard and hutch I fell in love with, also at a happy (for me) price because it's missing 2 of its original handles and plates and has 50+ years of normal household wear on the finish. I haven't been rushing to do anything about it since it is such a big job, and also because it really should be done by an expert who just isn't in our budget....See Morewhat would you do about this dining room furniture?
Comments (7)I don't have a formal dining room, living in a house that is 35 years old, I guess the builder didn't think he should put one in. We have 3 small children so we don't have formal dinners. My space is traditional, with shaker syle cabinets that are cream color on the upper cabinets with a coffee glaze, and the bottom cabinets a light cherry color. I like the look of a rustic table and a crystal chandelier above. I am trying to stay away from the predictable furniture store look, that is what I have always had. I like the unexpected, but I want it to look good....See MoreWillette Dining room set needs help, should I refinish?
Comments (1)I am always a supporter of "restoration" instead or "refinishing" If you strip a finish and apply a new finish etc it looks like a new table and ruins the wood's natural patina. This is what they mean by discouraging refinishing. My suggestion would to research furniture restoration techniques to determine what your problem may be. It is probably a wax finish. There are many articles on repairing water damage on wax finishes. You could also search for "furniture restoration or repair" in your area to consult a professional....See MoreNew CL Dining set Finally! Would you paint?
Comments (10)I think your CL set is cute. It fits your kitchen well too. I wondered if you painted your cabinets yourself? It can be kind of a big job painting furniture, so that has to be taken into consideration. What color were you thinking of painting the set? My thoughts are, to consider very carefully what you really want to see in your kitchen. While I like the look of mis-matched colors in some settings, that look doesn't work in everyone's home. But as for painting the set, why not? It's a good set but not a fine antique right? So paint if you like the look. I think that people forget sometimes that wood furniture gets painted all the time. Just look through the pages of Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrell or any of the other venues for buying dining room stuff. We see distressed white and distressed black and sage green and red and brown, etc. I think painting can be a waste if you have fine wood but not so much with just the 'average joe' piece of furniture. And how often do you see someone pick up a Pottery Barn catalog and say "Oh my gosh!! Why did they ruin that nice sideboard by painting it?" Well, never. People seem to only object when they hear the term "Painting wood". Anyway, go looking at fabric and paint and get all your ducks in a row to see what you really want to do in there. Perhaps just use some RAF on the chairs and lay out your fabric on the seats to see how that would look first. Red...See MoreFori
