August Redwork Lesson Plan

Supply List

Download butterfly pattern from link below (we will be using the pattern on Page 2) or your own pattern

1 skein 6 strand red embroidery floss (DMC or Anchor) (*optional, other colors)

White fabric (white, muslin, cream, etc). 8" x 8"

Basic hand sewing supplies: needle (any fine needle with hole big enough for floss will do), hoop, scissors.

Fabric for pin cushion back (8" x 8")

Stuffing for pin cushion/ornament (polyfil, crushed walnut shells, etc)

Sewing machine

*Optional Lightbox

*Optional QuilterÂs Dream Request Poly or similar thin batting, (8" x 8")

*Optional Beads or embellishments

Downloaded the butterfly but that's as far as I've gotten. Have to make a trip to Jo-anns for the floss.Going to look thru my stash for the white fabric and everything else I think I already have.Will regular thin cotton batting work for the polyfil?Also is there a way to use a window for a light box? I was thinking maybe taping butterfly to window then putting white material over it and tracing with pencil.I need to practice backstitch also,not even sure I can do it!!This is going to be a fun project! Yvonne

Hello again: Just an FYI that if any of you are grade school teachers, Bonnie Plants had a wonderful vegetable contest in which school teachers could apply and Bonnie Plants would send out some free cabbage plants to the class. When my daughter was in 3rd grade, I got her teacher on board with this program and it worked well. The kids took the plants home in April and posted pictures of their results by the end of August. It would be nice if the school gave a prize to the child with the biggest cabbage! My wife is a 2nd grade teacher. I will repeat her story so any teachers out there will not repeat her mistake. Her class did a science segment on plants and then planted seeds using "a science plant kit" that the school had on hand. The kids were so excited but then dismayed when all was a failure. Nothing came up that they planted. Other teachers at the same school had the same result. I was asked to find the problem. It turned out that the "kits" were 8 years old as they had been saved in storage. The seed was no longer viable but the teachers did not realize that. I felt sorry for the students.

Jayne, I'm not the organizer, but I'll try to explain how I think the classes will work. You simply sign up when the notice goes up for each class. Redwork is posted at present. The teacher will list the class supplies and a lesson plan. Then you get your supplies together, print out the pattern if there is one in a pdf file and be ready to start when the first instructions are posted. You can work on the project at your own speed and post any questions you might have for the teacher. I think we are only having one class a month with one teacher per class so hopefully it won't get too confusing. If you can post pics of your progress and your finished project, that will be great! Sue, What a great tribute to your cousin! Thank you for showing us the picture. Donna, I had no problem whatsoever when I renewed. I took a book to read but never even got a chance to read one page! Passport, SS, 2 address ID's and the old license and I was good to go. The only thing is, they didn't take Visa, but did Discover and MC...now how strange is that!? Oh yeah, there was a hold up while he was on the phone trying to explain to someone about what they should bring in......they just didn't 'get' it! OK ladies, LindaOH and I met up and went through all the vendor tables at the quilt show today! I was exhausted but she stayed to take a gander at the quilts again....she was there yesterday taking a class. It sure was fun but my stamina leaves a lot to be desired....we found a ruler that neither one of us had so we each bought one in case one day we might need it. LOL 4" x 8" Tomorrow is a family get together at my brother's about an hour north and my sister from MN will be there, too. Am excited to see my family again (without it being a funeral) and spend a few hours with them. SharonG/FL

The Landscape class will teach you to layer fabrics onto a foundation to "build" a landscape - a beach/shore scene, lakeside scene, mountain view, lighthouse scene, winterscape, etc. I'll also provide instruction on how to take a scene that you have photographed or found in a calendar, greeting card, internet image, etc. and make it into a Landscape Quilt. The class projects will be small wall quilts, but once you learn the technique you can make larger quilts too. I am amazed at how fast a backstitch can go! This is going to be a great new craft to do. I can't take my quilting anywhere to work on (all machine done) so this will be perfect!!! I made a bag to take to an applique class that was cancelled, so I'm gonna convert the bag for redwork supplies! Yipee!

Woodsy, yep, you'll be amazed at how fast you can do a nice redwork project! The butterfly pin cushion we're doing is very doable in an afternoon.

Yvonne, when I make little projects that need stuffing, I'll often tear up bits of batting too small for quilts and use that. You could use cotton balls, pretty much anything to fill the pillow/pin cushion. As far as the batting we'll use for sewing behind the redwork, any thin batting that'll needle through will be fine. And yep, you can trace using the window. Another way I've done it is if the pattern isn't dark enough, I'll go over it with a sharpie/marker and then usually I can see that through the fabric. Whatever method works! --Amy
