Need help buying a Washer & Dryer - Sears sale has great prices

x-posted in Laundry, but this forum gets much better traffic, and has such great advice so I wanted to see if I might get some replies here, too. Thanks!

We just purchased a new house, and need to purchase a W/D. I have no idea what brand/model/features to buy, but probably want a front loading set, say less than $1,500, maybe around $1000-1200?

Since we want to get one that Sears has on sale (probably through a price match at Lowes or Home Depot), I'm looking for help/tips on the following:

Which brands to go for, which to avoid?

Any specific models recommended?

What features (for that price range) should we make sure we get, any overhyped/not-needed?

You could start a holy war asking something like this. Might as well ask which is the best football team, or who makes the best car.

I have LG front loaders with the steam -- purchased because it was the only model that came in the blue we liked and we'd had such an awful time dealing with Whirlpool that we treated ourselves. I have used the steam feature in both, but I can't say it is something I needed. I do like the machines, the way they clean and the fact that they work quietly and efficiently (the loads are large!). I think you can get the model just below them with essentially all the same features but without the steam and fit your budget.

You may not be able to get some of the Sear's super deals price matched at other stores. Best Buy told me they would be losing money and I've hear that elsewhere too. I think Sear's must have made some super buying deals to gear up for this. Factor in delivery and other charges as well as a service agreement (if you plan to get one -- I did not) and make sure you compare your bottom line when trying to price match. Sears tends to run higher on delivery and service agreements.

The Kenmore model is sourced from LG. The Maytag and Whirlpools are siblings, based on Fisher & Paykel mechanical design using their SmartDrive motor. LG uses a similar motor. You can see parts diagrams by model number search at SearsPartsDirect.com or Whirlpool's site under Owner Center / Manuals & Literature. My LG W/D set is only 2 years old but I really love it. I bought it because I liked the looks of it, has reversible door on the dryer and the adaptable control panel on dryer so it can by set next to each other. I have it stacked and the control panel now is on the bottom of the dryer so it is very comfortable to use. This was my main reason as I am short. I read reviews later and they were very good. Many people are happy w/the set too. I have other LG appliances, all without problems. I definitely buy another LG in future or I might consider Siemens. I personaly don't care for GE, I had good luck w/ Kenmore induction cooktop,but their DW turned out to be lemon, so for me LG won.

Thank you for the help! I finally decided on the Home Depot set, mainly because LG *seems* to have a better rep when it comes to w/d (I'm new to w/d research though) and Home Depot had free delivery :) It's also going to be on a first floor/concrete (tile) so hopefully vibration won't be an issue. I looked at the set at Best Buy yesterday - I did like it b/c of the steam feature, but it scared me a bit b/c it's a new model exclusive to BB - which means there aren't any "real world" reviews and BB can set the "regular" price in the ad anywhere they please. I wasn't convinced it was a $1200 regular price machine when comparing it to the other regular Samsungs in the store. I also didn't want to stand in line on Friday a.m. if I didn't *have* to :) I also got the BING cashback on the HD set and I wouldn't have gotten anything on the BB set - so essentially it would have been $300 more for steam. (more or less) Thanks again :)

I bought the Samsung 328 two weeks ago, after my old Frigidaire FL constantly leaked after 8 years. I debated between the Miele 1203 and the Samsung. I come from Europe and I am used to small, efficient front loaders (that need a Phd to operate!). I decided on the Samsung because a local repair man told us that it was the brand they have the least problems/repairs with. I paid normal retail at Best Buy online($1200), it seems I never get the good deals :-( but I was very satisfied with purchase/delivery. The deciding factors were, that the Miele was almost twice the price and the warranty was only a year, and all the posts about the non issue of vibrations of the Samsung. And I can attest it is not an issue with this machine. We installed it ourselves on the second floor. The machine washes well enough for me. I have 4 soccer players in the family and it gets the dirt out. I wished the drum was a little smaller. I sort the laundry and wash a couple times a week and usually it is only half full. And a temperature chart relating to wash temperature would have been nice, too. Cold, warm and hot is just not very accurate. I don't know what difference the silvercare makes, but we have 3 air-o-swiss humidifier that use the Ag+, too. There it works wonders. I never have to clean them, no bacteria and other slimy stuff like in our old humidifiers. Now, if my Samsung washing machine lasts 10 years without any incident I am one happy customer. Another thing, the 328 doesn't have the filter to clean out. Neither did my Frigidaire and it was never an issue.

You are likely to get passionate replies on the laundry forum especially. I did look at the Meile (not in your price bracket), but they didn't work for us even if I was willing to spend a lot more. I can only tell you that coming up on 3 years with LG, I'm still happy and laundry is easier. Surprises me, but it really is.

The Laundry Forum discusses all the different brands at length. You said this Forum gets better traffic, but maybe you should just read through the threads that are already on the Laundry Forum, for a comprehensive overview of the various brands.

As the PP said, the folks over on the Laundry forum are the ones to ask. There are many many lengthy discussions over there about top-loaders vs. front-loaders, brands, etc. You really need to read through some threads there.

If there are one or two W/Ds you're interested in at Sears, do a search on the Laundry forum for those models. Also, look at other review sites like epinions.com .
