How do we feel about fish from China these days?

Sometime back we had a discussion about fish imported from China....at that time I threw out the packages of fish in my freezer that said "Product of China." Has anything changed since then?

Our Walmart sells frozen wild-caught flounder, haddock, etc. at low prices. I would love to eat more fish, but "Product of China" is still putting me off. Should it?

I recently picked up a big piece of wild-caught salmon from Alaska, also at Walmart. I'll try it soon.

Publix, here, sells shrimp from Thailand. I bought and served some recently.

I'd be more scared about seafood coming from anywhere near Japan.

I couldn't live without my dry swiffer sheets for quick cleaning. They slide under my sleigh bed and all my furniture that is low to the floor. I slant it on my baseboards and it removes a lot of dust and lint. If the floor seems extra gritty (dry mud carried in DH's boots) I will sweep with a soft bristled Old Cedar broom before swiffering. That is usually just in the mud-room and kitchen. Who am I kidding?? He can manage to make his way half-way through the house before he takes his boots off :). When I am deep/thorough cleaning (two or three times a year) I use the hard floor attachment on my Rainbow. It can be a PITA, but I know all the dust and grit get pulled out of the crevices. Refuse to use the wet swiffer systems on my wood floors. Only use microfleece pads and vinegar water. Plan on getting the Bona in the future after hearing such good things about it I do keep a box of wet swiffer sheets for when I am in a hurry and need to mop linoleum in laundry room and one bath. I am not overly concerned about any damage here as these floors will be replaced this year.

A standing ovation for sjerin and several others have great points too. Few are nostalgic enough to crave going back to the days of the Donner-Reed party. These days aren't we all pretty spoiled? We complain that it rained on a day we wanted a picnic and think nothing of those who had to find a plot of land, clear it, till something to grow crops and raise livestock to eat, and build a shelter rather than think "I want a bigger house". We complain about mosquitoes but we go into our air conditioned/screened houses. What did they do 150 years ago? They were happy to live to be 60, now we grumble that we hurt and someone was late delivering our pizza. However one thing about 150 years ago... there was next to nothing in divorce! Our children/grandchildren fearing someone is out to kill them and how "safe" we were before? That's pretty paranoid. And pretty blinded. Does nobody remember the cold war, the Nazis, the fighting for homesteading? Although information is good, the problem is misinformation. Just as the internet can educate, the internet can also dumb people down. How many people have shipped their cars overseas waiting for a check, sent their life savings and even given up their passports to gain the gifts from the Nigerian General who'll make them rich? But things really haven't truly "changed" that much. People were stupid and gullible before and are now. They were greedy before and are now. And there's always people ready to take advantage of them. It's just a little easier to find your targets today I think. Especially the last couple years things have certainly improved from the 8 years of devastation prior but we have a long way to go and a lot from which to recover. But our selfish side wants immediate gratification. That's sad. Yes, kids generally know more about certain technologies but I'm pleased about that aspect but concerned when I see them lose basic and IMO necessary skills and common sense in the process. I'm saddened by that aspect. I recently had the chance to communicate with a fellow from Russia. It was a real education. We tend to think that all corners of the globe are connected 24/7 these days. Hardly. Russia has not progressed like we have over the years. Telephones? Not commonplace in Russian homes. Computers in homes? Not common there. Internet cafes are the way to get on the internet, and for a short period of time. They don't all have 2 cars and an RV in the driveway. We forget about the lineups to get toilet paper but a similar situation exists for technology. We cry that our 5 year olds don't have an iPhone! There's time we have to say shame on us, isn't there? We ship seemingly endless money and goods to "3rd world" nations yet ignore others that aren't anywhere near what we have. And the biggest crime IMO is ignoring those in our own countries who need help. The elderly, injured and those who are working to earn a living without looking for handouts. For all those with blinders on, there was crime in past generations. My sister's friend was abducted as a teen and she's never been found. This was in a "safe" neighborhood too. Jacob Wetterling has never been found. Kids have disappeared over the years and all through history. People have been murdered all through history. There's the fear du-jour that impacts so many. Whether the fear was ending slavery or a rebellion to the Union; a drought or depression; rock & roll music being the end of mankind, guns, abortion, political parties or whatever, there's the fearmongering that is the biggest thing to fear IMHO. We all have our pet peeves. Whether it's a disease, social issue or whatever, they'll continue. I just hope that some semblance of reason and rational thinking can be held by at least enough to keep things together. And I guess I believe that life will go on. It won't be the same and that can be good and bad in certain ways, but it doesn't really matter, the reality is that it will go on one way or another.

for the most part, i prefer to the floor or just above. i'm trying to plan draperies for the new house now but they will be nothing like what we had at the old house... when i did the downstairs at our first place we did puddled curtains. my bff is a decorator and has been in the business for a thousand years. he knows EVERYONE. so they were made by a woman he stole from a professional work room and expertly hung by two specialists who spent over nine hours at my house steaming, fussing and arranging the draperies. this was not a weekend job for them. they told me they had been at the douglas-zeta jones residence the day before. i paid them $500 (not bad considering the time spent) and was asked in advance to provide six different flavors of ben & jerry's ice cream. seemed fair to me. plus it was august, after all. when they finished, the drapes were perfect and glorious. everyone commented on them. they were stunning. and then, one day i decided to pull out my vacuum cleaner and do a quick once around. so i picked up one side of the drapes and vacuumed the floor behind and below. and then i tried to puddle them in the exact, picture perfect arrangement as styled by the ultra fabulous team with the ice cream obsession. i was heartbroken. it wasn't easy but after a long time (...who knows, maybe an hour?) i finally brought them back to an acceptable state. from that point on, i never touched them, they never moved. i vacuumed AROUND them, always careful not to disturb their perfectness again -until the day we moved. so, no more puddled anything for me. romans or to the floor. that's about as dramatic as i'm ever going again.

I'm sure I've been "young lady-ed" at some point, but can't think of a precise time. I can picture a young waiter saying this (and faux flirting), but I think I would tend to just inwardly say, "What a dork" instead of feeling upset over it. I think I'd see him not as condescending, but perhaps as socially awkward and a bit clueless. And young. Sometimes youth and dumb go hand in hand. ;-) This reminds me of dining out once with my ex husband, who had a long ponytail. We were seated in a booth and the waiter walked up behind where my ex was sitting, turned to face us and said, "Are you ladies ready to order?" That was many years ago, but it still makes me chuckle. ;-) But I digress. I do agree that context is everything, but out of all the many things that tend to make my hackles rise, a waiter trying to be cute/clever isn't really one of them. That's more along the lines of meriting an inward eye roll and carrying on with the dining experience, IMO.

We have stopped eating fish from China. Problem is that even the fish from Alaskan waters sometimes gets to our markets after a trip to China. Why??? We would like to eat more fish also, but that "product of China" or "processed in China" sure makes puts me off too. I always tell the guy behind the counter that if the fish has been to China I don't want it.

No, I don't eat it and won't. I have a couple of online sources that I order seafood from and I know where it comes from. It is fresh and I can order it one day and get it the next. It costs a little more, but it is worth it.

I've bought the shrimp from Thailand. In fact, I had some last night. Which could explain why I don't feel well today. LOL

Seriously, the shrimp is farm raised and definitely not the best I've ever had. But the price is low enough for me to afford it, and it's not bad. I like the raw product a lot better than the cooked.

I never thought of ordering online. Interesting! Maybe someday if I feel up to splurging.

Not all Asian food are bad. Food from Thailand are actually ok to consume Alisande. However, when it comes to seafood and meat products, the fresher the better(unless, they're dried). I prefer these locally as much as I can get especially seafood. Fortunately, I live in Houston where food comes from all directions including locals.

I avoid 85% food from China. It's the way they prepare or preserve the food/seafood that frightens me. Same for food comes from Vietnam.

And as Jenn mentioned already, I'd stay away from food of Japan. However, I wouldn't be too concern about it. The Japanese government are too proud to export contaminated food. They wouldn't want to damage their well established reputation anymore than what Toyota has already done .

it's gotten so you can't afford some fish no matter where they're from...we used to get salmon from costco but yikes...it's more than steak...

I live in the Texas panhandle and unfortunately I can't get any seafood fresh. I love it and will order and pay more for fresh.

We do have some hunters than come from Louisiana that bring shrimp and some from the Texas coast, they are both so good.

I will not purchase nor consume seafood or fish from China, Thailand, Korea or Indonesia. I love seafood so it is a hard thing to do but we don't eat it nearly as often as we once did. Lucky for us, we are not too far from the fish market in Inner Harbor and we often drive to the 'Burgh's strip district for fresh fish, the better shops list where the fish originates.

I try to avoid food from China, where they poisoned their babies by putting melamine in the baby formula, and then did it again. If they will endanger their babies for the almighty yen, they sure wouldn't be looking out for my family's safety.

I've bought shrimp from China...but only cause it was for a dish I was cooking and not eating raw...still not gonna go that route for the fresh stuff...

No, if it's been to China I don't buy it. You have to be careful if it's frozen fish because they try to hide that info on the package. I wish the US would refuse to let them ship it here.

After watching the documentary, "The Cove", I wouldn't put anything past Japan either. If they are willing to try to pass off mercury-filled dolphin meat as other types of fish, I would not be surprised at other contaminated fish being sold also.

Some practices by the Japanese gov't that The Cove reveals are horrifying to say the least. It's an excellent film, although extremely difficult to watch.

I agree, Kat--I meant to mention that. I won't buy farm-raised salmon, but the only shrimp I can find are farm-raised in Thailand. Maybe that's why they don't taste so great to me. Fish farms are good things to avoid.

I asked where we get ours she said they have to tell you where its from,ours she said Phillapines She said it could be affected from Japans problems.So ask

It's hard to know what you're buying and from where.
I recently picked up a box of Highliner to look at where it is from. On the front it says Product of Canada but on the back in very fine print, it says it comes from China.

I don't buy anything, knowingly from China.

As long as anything is packaged in Canada it can be labelled Product of. This is blatent false advertising/marketing IMO.
