Full StoryPerusing my mother's cookbooks, I've found the most interesting ones to be those that came with new appliances. I tried to copy and paste a whole page of this 1937 "The Everyday Hostess" [63 pages] but couldn't do it. Here's a recipe I haven't seen before:

COCOANUT STRIPS
Remove crusts from slices of day-old bread. Cut each slice into three strips. Spread strips on all sides with sweetened condensed milk, covering well. Roll in dry shredded cocoanut, broken fine. Brown under low broiler flame, or toast on fork over coals [!] These Cocoanut Strips may be baked in the oven at 375 for about 3 minutes or until light brown.
Maybe the breadmaker manufacturers should add it to their suggestions for what to do w/ day-old bread?
