A Last Minute Snafu -- Need Ventilation Help!

Well, things were going pretty well on my kitchen remodel -- thanks in large part to the wealth of information I've found here. Now as we enter the final stretch, it turns out that the wall mount range hood I bought (on sale, natch!) won't work because there are floor joists in the way of the duct. The obvious solution, I think, is to find an island hood and use that. Unfortunately, as many of you know, they are more expensive. The place where I bought my appliances has a Vent a Hood in my size (42 inches) marked down to $900, though it is bulkier than I intended (basically a slanted box). I'm waiting to hear if the manager will take back the hood I already bought, which would make the deal . . . I've also looked on ebay, where you can pick up a 42 inch island hood for less than a $1000, but I really don't know much about those brands. I'm frantic because the floor guys are staining the floor on Tuesday, so I've got to move out. Any thoughts would really be appreciated!

P.s. I'm coming from basically no ventilation, so any will be an improvement. The cooktop under is it a six-burner Miele, 42 inches.

Can your contractor either cut through the joist and securely reposition that section (we might face this and my contractor said we could do this if necessary). or can you move your island back or forward a few inches? These things likely wouldn't cost as much as wasting the hood you have and buying a new one??

I have joists in the way of mine and my contractor is going to cut through them if I remember correctly. It isn't a big deal. Check with your contractor. As faleash said, it is easier to do this than to buy a new hood!

If you're talking about the bathroom off the Rumpus room, the only thing I think you really need to do is make it a tiny bit wider. I would bring the bathroom wall out even with the edge of the Rumpus Room's built-in cabinets so that there is a little more "standing room" in front of the toilet and the shower is a little bigger. Then, if window placement will allow you to do so, for the convenience of guests staying in the guest room, you might mirror image the whole bathroom vertically so that the sink (and door) are up close to the guest room and the shower is down by the built-in cabinets. That would save your guests a few steps to reach the toilet in the middle of the night. Now stop obsessing! There ARE only so many ways to arrange a toilet, a shower, and a vanity. LOL! The whole upstairs looks fantastic. Great theater room, nice large play room with plenty of room for a bar sink and fridge and storage of games/toys, a balcony that'll be big enough to actually sit out on to enjoy the view, AND easy access to the unfinished attic! I think you've done good! Now how about having your architect revise the elevation drawings and post those just so we can see them? I'm looking forward to watching you build.

There was a few things I still wasn't quite happy with, so I made a few minor changes. What do you think of this? - Double doors into the bedroom to let light in from the juliette balcony doors. The doors should likely be lined up. - I didn't like where the designer originally put the closets and tried to play around with where to put them, but haven't quite worked it out yet. - I'm not posisitve what the end wall of the rumpus room was lining up with along the front elevation so I need to get feedback from the designer regarding whether the bathroom and bar location work. And of course - the rumpus room is still huge, and I have no idea what I will do with all this space, it is bigger than my living room! :) ha (I'm 7 months pregnant now with our first, and we plan on having one more, so I'm sure this will sort it self out with time!)

There are too many variaables that only your code inspector can green light. In general though, all hoods and inserts have minimum and maximum height distances from the surface that they cover. And width too. Your contractsr and inspector are gonna have to put their heads together on site. But, it's probably best to dance with the one who brung ya as it's already on site. But, given the chance to change, I probably would as the size you've given doesn't seem to provide adequate coverage to your cooking surface below. And it just barely provides enough CFM. Where is your KD in all of this? That's who should have read all the specs and planned something code compliant. And who should have told you that you can't have what you want because it's not functional.

bodica, Very good advice. It is hard to remember to pause and enjoy the experience. I assume we will never do this again. This is supposed to the the "forever" house. :) Days when we make a lot of progress, we are on cloud nine. Days when we don't it hits us hard, but, we will get there and I know it will all be worth it. Analogous to having a baby... sdionnemoore, I love talking to people who are at the same point as us. I really love the SW Blonde strip and all the colors on it. Please post pictures as your paint goes up! I'd love to see them. Actually, cutting through floor joists usually IS a big deal. That sounds completely nutty. Remember, we're talking floor joists here (according to the OP), NOT wall studs in a non-load bearing wall. If that's the case, then you cannot just "cut through them." Unless you don't mind the second floor sagging or giving way.

However, I'm not sure why floor joists present a problem, anyway. I find it hard to believe that your contractor can't find a way to route the duct to avoid the floor joists by angling the duct if necessary. Can you explain, or post photos, showing why the floor joists are an issue? And are you running your duct up through the wall and thus it's the joists in your kitchen ceiling that are the problem? Or are you doing it backwards and running the duct DOWN and then into the floor under your kitchen? More info would definitely help in making suggestions (though as always my first thought is to get Modern Aire to fab a custom hood with the duct collar located exactly where you want it to be).

Wow, do you think Modern Aire can put the duct collar anywhere on a hood? That is something I should bear in mind when I retrofit ventilation in my old house as when we open the ceiling the joists/studs may be in an awkward place. I need to ventilate up through the wall and out over a one story addition which will likely necessitate going through the floor above.

I understand the floor joist issue -- I had to figure out the placement of my hood and the joists. What I don't understand is why an island hood would solve the problem if the range or cooktop and hood are to be mounted against a wall.

Are the joists running parallel (same direction, side to side to the cooktop and hood or perpendicular to it (across or front to back)?

Does the hood have a chimney, a cabinet above it or a different type of duct cover?

What size is the duct?

It would seem to me that the answer would be in adapting the duct and possibly the cover.

Please post pictures so we can see what the problem is and the surrounding area. We're in the dark here b/c we can't see the whole picture.

Sorry, I'm not explaining this well. The attached picture shows where the cooktop and hood are supposed to go. The floor joists run along the wall - from the cabinet to the other end of the kitchen and into the dining room, so I don't think they can be cut. The builder needs to get the duct about five inches out from the wall, which is why I thought an island model would work -- it would cover from the wall to the counter edge, but the duct would be away from the wall, unlike the duct for the wall model I have, which is a chimney model and is supposed to go straight up into the attic (the duct is snug to the wall -- or should be).

Am I making sense yet???
