Remember this project of mine? (Pics)

Some of you may remember my planning stages on this quilt. A lady my DH works with asked if I could do a wallhanging for her. After I said 'yes' she said "well, I have a greyhound. Can you make that into a quilt?" Hmmmm. Had to think on that a bit.

This is what I came up with. I've been working on it too long and finally got it finished today!! (what a relief that is!) The Irish Chain represents the black/white checkered flag of racing, and the gold the winner! The one greyhound this lady had at the beginning of the project looks very much like the portrait, though now she also has a 2nd one I've not seen.

There is quilting (shown not too well in the last photo) through all the grey squares of the Irish chain, as well as in the background of the portrait. I did piping for the first time around the edge and the black corner had little white pawprints on it. This one took a bit longer than the teapots!!! LOL

Hi Jeff, I have posted that one before, Haworthia pygmaea f. crystallina, to the best of my knowledge, but this is the first time it's been outdoors for any length of time...At least it tanned, and did not burn, unlike some of its less fortunate brethren in my care lately. I need some direction here. I first assumed a bumped thread meant that it was a removed thread, then I read on further, and schoolhouse said they were "gob smacked" after going to the bumped thread. I have no idea what "gob smacked" means. Where is the bumped thread? I'm getting errors when I try to search the gallery section. I went to Garden Galleries, Great Gardens. I tried searching for his name. Got only error messages. Can someone provide me with the actual link?

shasta, I hope I didn't read it on this thread :-) but no one mentioned digging them up in any of the discussion I read about it. You just leave them where they are. I don't know everything, but I covered mine with chicken wire (read that somewhere, they'll grow through it) so the squirrels wouldn't dig them up. Then I had to cut some of it away this spring because it was cramping some of the tulips, haven't bothered covering it with mulch but should if I leave it. I think I'll take it off after the leaves die back and take my chances. I don't see anybody else doing that. As usual, the squirrels and/or chipmunks are messing with my stuff, gotta cut more chicken wire for all my planters. I love the critters but am really cross with them at this point. I think I did check back on the bulb forum with another question I had. Someone wanted to know if you could transplant tulips now. I can't remember the answer to that exactly - I wouldn't - would wait until fall, but they were talking those bulblets. One opinion is they take so long to mature and bulbs are cheap but you can grow those, sounds like a hassle. We'll see what happens with mine. There was an opinion that those grown in shadier spots are less likely to come back. Clunk. That could be mine on the east side of the house that don't even get a full morning of sun because of trees. Anyway, you might want to try it, and it's probably not too late to give them some bloom booster now for when they quit blooming for the food storage process, couldn't hurt. Your tulips are really pretty. And I still love your jug ghetto. Mine aren't thick like that because the germination is more in patches. But a visual is a great help and tells me to uncover mine (it is still getting pretty chilly here at night and I've got vent holes in mine). Now I'm seeing peoples' photos here, and I'm not seeing vent holes in the top part of the jug. Maybe they are just small and don't show. I will let them grow on until they get more like yours, more likely to transplant more easily than smaller ones. Also I decided if I reuse the jugs next year, I'm going to follow the packaging tape suggestion. I had a terrible time getting the duct tape off the 3 I did, white duct tape no less. I was thinking I could cut around it with my exacto knive and just put more over it again. You must have a lot of room for all those plants! I hope I'm around and you post pictures when you get the flowers blooming. I'm really hurting with a fairly small yard and few sunny spots because I love trees, too, and would have more if I could. I was thinking of some of the photos I've seen where people have acres to work with and told myself I'd better be thankful for what I do have!

Thanks. I really needed the encouragement. I laugh because I had the same ideas and have started my action. My walkway has pots started with caladium and morning glory (my daughters planter) started only a couple weeks ago. I have a vitex tree in the center of the yard in the landscaping that I can't wait to grow. I love those trees and contacted many people to find out if they were agressive and it seems that in my area it is not known to be. My mom got me a little snail for the garden and I planted some small monarda cuttings which should fill in next year. I have some cuttings in the back area by the bird feeder that is already blooming and some planted in the back behind the bushes for my enjoyment but it is larger and not blooming or budding. I know these will do some filling in in the next year to come. I also have foxglove seed in the back for some height around the birdbath and some various medium bulbs (cannas, iris, lilies, glads) toward the back. On the side I have a small trellis (need to replace with taller one) behind my hummingbird feeder with painted lady runnerbean and a potted coral honeysuckle that I'm babying. On the other side of the porch I have a trellis with coral honeysuckle. I'll show pictures, it's an overload though. Sorry. I am going to put in a bird house. I love the link above. We had a very sad unsuccessful house finch family starting on the corner of my porch and I'm heartbroken that we had no survivors. I don't use pesticides (even on my roses) so I don't know what happened. Here is the picture overload. The rose is in this corner (First prize I think?, there is mums also and colombine planted in this area also and other bulbs planted around the guara that I can't remember the name of (blue flowers). side of house by windows--hostas which may come out if they burn but they've been there for 2 seasons already, 2 mr. lincoln rose (jap beetle breeding ground right now), gardenia in front of windows and some bulbs that may not come up this year and in the center is mexican bush sage. back corner with gaura, liriope, salvias of different variety, a baby crepe myrtle in the very back corner, gladiolus, rose in front of fence with various other stuff, creeping raspberry underplanted in the whole corner. snail in front garden more towards the sidewalk with monarda cuttings and various reseeding annuals. mailbox with clematis, LIR salvia, white salvia, creeping phlox and setcreasia. This is all I can do on the side. Hubby wants to keep this area grass for golf practice. I will do something in the front corner of the yard for sitting though so I can watch the kids. I had to replace the climbing America because I accidently shovel pruned it last year. The other is Josephs coat which takes off like a weed and various minis. Again, I do not spray and the roses will be much better looking come a few weeks when I can go and butcher the jap beetle damage. Thank goodness these things only last a short time. Ideas for location of bird house and other plants, trellis, where to put daisy's (I NEED some) or ANYTHING else????? I love y'alls ideas. A huge thanks and even hugs to you all.

Geez, that sure is great! What alot of work..and the portrait fabrics are perfect!

Did you use an iron on product and did you zig zag with invisible thread? I've seen so many techniques for this.

I think it's a winner too!

It worked up to be about 50" x 60"
The portrait was done with fusible web with clear zig-zag on the white fabrics and brown silk thread on the brown fabrics.
The black eyes have a touch of white fabric paint for the highlights.
And in case anyone is wondering, the black screen printed greyhounds came from diggitydog.com They have tons of animals they can print on fabric. Just plan for more than enough because they aren't consistently spaced on white muslin and fussy cutting is necessary.

What a wonderful work of art. You have caught that curious look they have when the ears are forward and they're really looking at something seriously (like a cat!) It took my breath away. The lady can only be delighted with it. Well done!

I'm not a dog lover, but I love the intricate work you did on the portrait. VERY nice. :) The touch of white paint on the eyes really add that extra special touch.

Islay is right. That dogs face is full of emotion!! Not something you see in many painted portraits and rarely in fabric ones. Her eyes are alive!! You can really pat yourself on the back for this one..it's a beautiful work of art.
I know you have the heart..now I know you have the talent.

I have to say, I'm pretty proud of myself for this one. I was scared to death to do it, and really am NOT an artistic type! And I cannot really take credit for the portrait...it was an online pattern.

Chooosing the fabrics for the portrait I think was the key to the animation in it. That part turned out to not be as hard as I'd imagined. The key is a black & white printout of the pattern...that really helps you to determine values. That and a good selection of fabrics...I bought 1/8yds of many more than I actually used!

Anyway, thanks for the kudos! I may be crazy and drive the 45 miles (each way) to DH's work today so I can give it to her in person rather than have him do it!!

Well, I just got home from delivering the quilt. She was very impressed as was another co-worker who sees all the quilts DH mails out for me!

As soon as I started to unfold it, she said "There's my Spike!" (the name of the dog that prompted it) She was so emotional she couldn't read the label outloud to the other person...I had to.

Very well received! (Glad that one's done!) Chickens are next...

I looked at diggitydog.com and couldn't find screen prints at all. Could you tell me where to find them on that sight. We have a cute labradoddle.

Jennifer, your quilt is just spectacular! I can't get over how that one white print with the muted spots is so perfect for the dog. With all that hard work it had to be worth the look on the lady's face and her reaction. That's the best of all. Now how about those chickens! You have to post when you're finished.

It's funny, Kay. That one fabric you speak of is actually a birch bark tree print. Funny how it works if you can look out of the box.
