Paint experts! Need your help!

You may have seen my previous post not to far below with our new built-in bookcases. We are now ready for paint. This will be a first for us. I do trust the guys at sherwin williams but I trust all of you more! What kind of paint should I use? We plan to fill the holes with the wood puddy and give it a good sanding prior but other than that, I'm quite lost on exactly how we should proceed. I don't want them to be sticky for obvious reasons and I figured that is one potential pitfall. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Darn, maybe someone can name the paint I used on our built-in's and kitchen...It's from SW, and I think it has "Dover" in the name.

What do you not want to be sticky? The wood putty or shelves? lol.

I'm not familiar with wood putty, but make sure the shelves are sanded baby bottom smoothe! Nothing worse than dusting a shelf that wasn't quite sanded properly.

Use semi-gloss, and let the paint cure longer than recommended.

Thanks Oakley. LOL, I don't want the shelves to be sticky. My mom painted a couple pieces of furniture and for whatever reason the finish was sticky. Not sure what she did wrong but I want to make sure I don't replicate that mistake! How long did yours cure for? Do you like the semi'gloss finish?

1. Get a soil test. Call your nearest county extension service for a test kit and details. It will likely take two weeks for results. If you need to apply sulfur, lime, or any other amendment per test recommendation (that is not applied in Step 6), you can do it after seeding if you don't get results back in time. 2. Apply that "R" word stuff and again one week after the first application. You can seed the lawn one week after the second app. 3. Scalp it down 4. Rake it up 5. Core aerate (or cheat with Nitron A-35) 6. Fertilize 7. Sow seeds 8. Topdress 1/4 inch layer compost, peat moss, or clean straw (weed-free). 9. Irrigation schedule water 15-20 minutes twice a day for two weeks water 20-30 minutes once a day for one week water 30-45 minutes once a day every other day for one week water 30-45 minutes once a day twice a week for one week move into deep irrigation, increasing the time to provide 1 inch of water all over and decreasing the frequency to just once a week. Starting off, the schedule supplies roughly 1/4 inch of water, then increases that amount while decreasing frequency of application at the same time. Like practically everything that concerns lawn care, this schedule is a general guideline and should be modified to accommodate your specific conditions. The lengths of time should be modified if you have an automatic sprinkler system since that will not take as long to provide adequate moisture. So, decrease amount of water (time) but maintain frequency as is. The tuna cans test is recommended. If it is still especially warm, you may want to irrigate 3 times a day (10-15 minutes if necessary) for that first couple weeks. Your objective is to keep the upper 1 inch of soil moist and not let the seeds dry out. Baby the grass for the rest of year. Once the seeds begin to sprout, don't walk on it if at all possible. First mowing is when the new grass reaches two inches. Remove 1/3 of the grass blade, then allow to grow to 4 inches. Cut it back to 2.5 inches and maintain 2.5 inches mowing height.

Massachusetts, as a whole, is in the zones 5 & 6....with maybe a 7 thrown in there close to the ocean. Generally, being close to large bodies of water moderates temperatures and Boston is no different. Frosts are less severe close to the water....more severe inland....that is a given. As far as grass seed is concerned and its choice whether one is better than the other it is quite easy to make a decision; simply go to your local full-service garden nursery and speak to the person/s who run the place and ask their opinion. Mostly, its a better rule to buy a mix.....and for northern grasses the combination of Kentucky Bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fescue makes for a good selection ---each grass gives its best for conditions encountered in northern areas. You can do research youself on the why's to buy a mix and on the different grasses individual capabilities. Generally, one gives good results when summer heat hits, the other, stands up to shade, and the other stands up to drought when that occurs. Grass color often is the result of the soil it is growing in. It might take time when, say....a section is needing fixing...and is sodded; it might result in a shade of green unlike the rest of the lawn. That's normal....but in time, the sod will be fed from the same soil and conditions as the rest of the lawn. A good rule of thumb: cut the grass at a uniform height...generally 3" - 3 1/2" This is a height that is not high....not low...but high enough to shade out weed seeds that is in every lawn. Now some grasses, like bent...which is used on golf greens, is cut very low----but that grass is especially able to take such low height---it isn't harmed by sun and wind and drought....as other grasses would be. Grass, left high will shade out weed seeds and over time, your lawn will be much better for it. Some owners cut their lawns short prior to winter freeze....but that is generally accepted to be not a good thing to do. Better the grass is left a bit higher....to conserve as much moisture as possible to go into winter. Northing harms a lawn more than a cold northern winter....winter takes a terrible toll on lawns and spring fixes are common because of it. Some fertilize their lawns going into winter---others feed their lawns in the spring and follow a regular routine of feeding throughout the spring and summer. It can be a crap-shoot whether one routine is better than the other. Good lawns take time and effort and one shouldn't expect miracles. With all what can attack our lawns, its good to see our lawns come through winter in decent shape.

If I were to go with the 3x6 subways that have the appearance of a beveled edge, I don't know how to end it where my cabinets, counters end. I would definitely NOT want to end it o full and half tiles, because you'd end up with an edges that was not constant, due to that heavy bevel o the full tiles. What you might look into is Schluter's Rondec bullnose strip. I'm not a big fan, but it's the least of all "evils", if you will. Here is a link that might be useful: Schluter Rondec

Oldbat2be, thank you so much for the mock ups! This was the kick in the pants I needed to talk to my contractor. I forgot to mention that our w/d will be white too so the cabs will likely clash with those, so I think we've got to paint. mdln, good suggestion -- I'm pretty sure they are warm. I'll check and see if cool lights help. daisychain01, thanks, reveal hopefully coming soon! raven, I just looked at Krypton and it is beautiful. I'm going out to get some samples tomorrow and will paint a sample board of my top 3 colors and put it in the room and report back.

There is a color called Dover White, is that what you are thinking of oakley? I think the ProClassic Alkyd Enamel series might be a good choice for bookshelves. To my understanding, stickiness comes from not waiting the prescribed time between coats. It will take lots of patience, but also, do not load your shelves up for a few days. It takes awhile for paint to cure -after it's dry. But if you put stuff on them before they cure, you will get little indents and other marks.

If it isn't cured and you put books and such on the shelves, they will stick and ruin the books.

An oil based paint will give you a more durable finish as will a semigloss. Make sure you sand well. Then clean off all the dust. Some will use a tack cloth, but I can't stand the feel of them. So I use paper towels and denatured alcohol which cuts any grease as well.

Prime first....and expect that coat to really soak into the wood. Then wait, as suggested, even longer than recommended. You want that good and dry.

Then paint your color coat...wait again longer than recommended....and then you may need a 2nd coat.

Plan on this taking awhile as you have a LOT of shelves to do.

If the shelves are removable, you want to take them out and do them outside of the unit...paint the unit separately. And try not to get paint on the inside edges of the shelves as it may add too much thickness and make them harder to slide into place.

In fact you have so many shelves to do, you may want to investigate a paint sprayer...it will go much faster.

Sticky can sometimes be from not letting the paint cure long enough. I bought some paint for BM that cures to a very hard durable finish, but it does it in about a week, and before that it's tacky and you can put finger prints in it. It also says to wait 12-24 hours between coats.

I also have used the Low VOC Acrylic from SW. That is some neat stuff, no smell and cleans up really well. Also needs a bit more time to fully cure. I used in on the trim, doors and wainscoting in the entry way that gets a lot of abuse. Very happy with the durability. I think this was the easiest to use paint I've ever come across. Was painting a dark brown using a brush (over a mustard yellow) and it covered wonderfully and self leveled nicely. I was told it is used a lot in high traffic commercial applications.

Their pre-catalized Epoxy paint also dries to a very durable finish. I use it on the ceiling where I need to scrub (from having wood heat). Nothing sticks to it once cured, including more paint. Directions say if you wait more than 72 hours, you have to sand before applying a second coat. Both of those aren't cheap paint though, think they retail for near $100 a gallon.
