Pink/Green Stack & Whack & other UFO (pix)

For those of you curious (or even if you're not) at how the pink & green Stack & Whack (AKA $3 WalMart Challenge) turned out...here's a photo of it completed. The lady who completed it for Mexico took the picture so it's hard to get a good look at the binding...which is yellow.

Here's a UFO that I made into a top around the same time. The same lady above quilted & finished this quilt for Mexico as well.

It's amazing what a little sandwiching, quilting & binding can do for a quilt. :)

Those are great -- I like them both! Very different but each really nice!!!

There are a few other new pink lilacs now, one is growing in a yard the other way from me, doesn't look like Isabella. I think the James MacFarlane is pink, but they don't always necessarily bloom true. I bought some and planted them on the farm, can't remember the names now except for Sensation. They all died but the yellow one because I couldn't be there to get them off to a good start. The yellow one is pretty pale but pretty anyway. There is an oriental yellow one that is more showy in Klehm's catalog. That other link was a fascinating read. Nothing about propagation, but what a contribution she made. I think I stumbled onto a page of that site before. What a lady! Makes me regret I couldn't have had the foresight to get started in my better years. Wow, too bad it's an Australian site (can't order from them probably) and too bad I don't have more room for them. We have a beautiful public lilac garden a block away, but there are newer, more exotic ones out there now compared to what they put in about 30 years ago. Still, it is a lovely place. That is definitely peachy in the bud form, then it looks like it opens to a more pink shade. Beautiful thing. You are finding some neat sites on the web.

Hi, aliska, I'll try to get some pics when the crop of current buds open. I'm trying to figure out how to share a thought in a friendly "let's chat about roses and our experiences" way that doesn't sound pompous or preachy....when you say you hope you're not unlucky enough to get ones that are too orange....well, sometimes this rose *will* look sort of "orange" or at least the color of orange juice. Sometimes it will look the purest soft apricot sometimes a golden apricot, sometimes it will have apricot, orange juice, and soft peach all mixed and then a day or two later will be a different color. That is one of the beauties of many roses, and especially of the Austin roses. I'm just mentioning this because I happened to notice in some of your posts that you have some concerns that roses won't look like the pictures, or that they will look like one certain picture that is a shade you don't care for. Sincerely, I don't mean this in a "talking down to you" way, but you do need to be prepared for the form, shade and sometimes even the color of roses to be different (sometimes wildly different) at different stages of maturity, at different times of the year, and sometimes even from one week to the other if the weather changes dramatically. You should see my Gruss an Aachens right now, they don't look like any pics of them I've ever seen and I probably wouldn't have fallen in love with them if the only pics I'd ever seen looked like my whole bush full of blooms does right now; but part of the fun is knowing that next week or next month, or especially this fall...it'll be like having a whole different rose!

Rosebush- veilchenblau is one of the very easiest i have to root. It's extremely vigorous (up to 20' canes!!), moderately thorny, scentless and only blooms once. But it covers itself when it does and it's a unique color. Plus it is very carefree- the jap beetles do gnaw some, but it bounces right back. Blackspot is never an issue for me. If you come to the swap, i'll be happy to bring some, or you can email me and we can meet up separately somewhere sometime. You'd be welcome to come here when they're all blooming- which should be 2 or 3 weeks at most. If you haven't made it to a swap yet, though- you really need to come!! Alicia, thanks for the thoughts on the roses. I guess it amazes me because even though they are glorious when they bloom it's fairly brief and it's not as though they're that interesting as foliage plants, though i do love the winter spring color. Most people seem to be so much more into repeat bloom and the more formal shape of the teas. The ones i have really are easy- i have never sprayed for anything- don't really do much but occasionally give them espoma, and prune when needed. Most of them only get about 4.5 hours of sun and have done well (the fence ones get more like 5- 5.5). I wish you could see Betty's spread. I doubt it'll ever be open for another open house because of their health. Knock on wood- so far the deer have left the roses alone since they're up front.

Gloria: Yea, there are a few that are a strange bunch. I decided that rather than get over invested emotionally, I'll do whatever I can to help them, but if they don't like me, that's the way it goes. I'm sick about them also, but, I'm going to wait on others until I have all the grow lights and everything set up. That way, they have heat, mist, and the correct light for optimal growing in a less than ideal environment. I'm also going to pot some up some later today. I have to be somewhere later this morning so I can't get potting soil under my nails yet. (grin) This afternoon I will though. LOL

They're going down with a group from our church that helps build homes in Mexico. Not sure when the next trip is...but I'm guessing it's going to be in the fall. I'm happy to see them put to good use. :)

I really like the stack & whack. I haven't done one yet and am a bit scared to do it. Is is easy enough and does it waste fabric?

Both are lovely, but I remember that stack and whack from when it was just a collection of hexagons, and I loved it so much that so far no fabric candidates for S&W have been able to make me reach into my purse. Every time I go to a fabric store, I keep an eye out for one, but I guess I won't be happy until I find one with hot pink, orange, and some sort of green, like yours! Oh, what is wrong with me?! Does anyone even know the maker and name of that particular fabric?
