Vinegar or baking soda or both?

The boys' hockey gear stinks. STINKS! I'm gonna trap it to the top of the van, can't stand to have it in the car. It is so very nasty. I have to stand up wind when they are wearing it.

I've washed, sprayed, etc. I'm going to try again. I'm domestically challenged. It is all going in the washer again soon. Which do you think will work better? Baking soda or vinegar alone? Or can I just put them both in together for good measure? ;o)

No don't combine the two or you will create a volcano!

Why not wash them in ammonia? I used to do that.

Even using the same growing medium in both a flood and drain as well as in a drip system, the roots in the drip will get more air/oxygen than in the flood and drain system (assuming the flow rate is equal). While the flood and drain system is flooded (pump on) the roots are completely submerged, and are only getting oxygen from what's in the water (until it drains). In a drip system, there is still generally a lot of air still in the root zone while water drips down through it. But just because you are using the same growing medium in both systems, that dosen't mean that the the moisture retention will be the same in both systems. Two other variables are the amount of growing medium (the overall volume of growing medium). As an example a five gallon bucket filled with growing medium will hold much more moisture than a 3 inch basket filled with the same growing medium, thus the 3 inch basket will need more frequent watering. The other major factor is the size of the plants, a large tomato plant will suck up a lot more moisture, than a small lettuce or strawberry plant will, even if they both have the same volume of growing medium. So the large plant/s will need more frequent watering. My rule of thumb is to try and make things adjustable. That way you can see how the plants respond and adjust to their needs accordingly. One way to adjust water flow is with a ball cock valve, it can be opened or closed according to the water flow needed through it. P.S. One thing that's important with tomato's is even watering. The fruit can tend to crack if the roots are subject to moist then dryer conditions between watering cycles. So you'll want to keep them evenly moist.

I've followed the recommended procedure on mine and it's worked just fine. Don't see any reason to use baking soda, except perhaps for cleaning the carafe if need be. Instructions were to pour a pint of white vinegar into the well, run it for 30 seconds and shut it off and let it sit to work on the buildup in there. Then finish the cycle. Run a carafe of clean water through afterward. Could do the procoedure twice if you wanted I suppose but I never have. And I always run 4-5 containers of clean (actually filtered) water through after the vinegar treatment. Frequency depends on the type of water you have and the useage of the maker.

Floorguy, Thanks for your response. could your recommend any specific machine that I can buy to do that economically or I should just hire a professional in stead? I search on the web and the only high temp, steam cleaner is something like this Wagner 915 1,500-Watt On-Demand Power Steamer and Cleaner. Thanks for your advice. Rich

The baking soda still in the fibers probably combined with the vinegar to oxidize and bleached the rug. If the fibers are damaged, attempts to have it repaired with redying may not be successful. You can consult a rug repair specialist if the rug is worth it. Next time, try using something like Nature's Miracle first. OxyClean would be another possibility, but if the dyes in the rug are sensitive, that might cause damage too.

Make them store them in the garage or basement.
Do they immediately remove them from their bags when they get home? The bags will stink too!
Gosh, how I hated my boys hockey equipment.
What about a large tote in the back of the van to hold the stink til you get home?
It gets worse. They graduate to hunting and spray their hunting clothes with deer urine and bring it into the house.
Or try to catch a skunk! Oh yeah, boys do stink!!!! LOL!

Wash it as usual. Put in garbage bag with some regular charcoal, not the kind with lighter fluid in it.(I know, it's tempting to just put a match to it, instead!). Seal the bag. Leave sit for several days. Smell should be gone. The charcoal with absorb the odor and bacteria causing the odor. If a little charcoal dust gets on them, wash them again. Put a butter dish or cool whip bowl filled with charcoal in the van, put holes in lid and put lid on dish. It will help with any odor being left behind. Works for sour milk smell and rotton food smell in car carpets and refrigerators. It will work on hockey clothes!

Ammonia was what I used on DS's clothes. He worked in a tire store/garage. For the greasy clothes and the smell.
OR use Borax. 20 Mule Team Borax is wonderful stuff. DD used it when Steve and his son were out camping, slept on a air mattress. His son had a bed wetting problem. The top of the air mattress was that flocked stuff. She thought she'd have to toss it in the garbage. She sprinkled it on while the mattress was wet. Let it dry and the smell was almost gone. Did it a second time and it was gone. I've also used Borax in my laundry and had good luck with it. Its an additive, not a laundry soap so you will need soap also.

I use pinesoil.Some does not like the smell of pinesoil,but I put it in my sheets,pillowcases,also in my towels and washcloths when I was them too.Everyone to their own but it makes them smell so fresh and clean.I also clean my bathrooms with pinesoil too.

There's a product called OdoBan (can find it at WM or grocery store) that I haven't (thankfully, haven't had to) use on hockey gear, but it DOES get out the stink from smelly males (like bedding/couches, etc.) DD also uses it for dog accidents in carpet (after she cleans it up.) It has a strong smell initially, but the scent fades quickly, and so does the stink.

Get some "sport wash" at walmart, its in the sporting goods department. Use just 1 capful in your laundry and it takes out all odor & scents. Its about $5. for a 16 oz bottle.
