Another WISP done! (3 pics)

This is my son's twin size quilt. I started on it March 2006! He is 11 and picked out all the fabric and the pattern. The pattern is Smokey Mountain Stars on Quiltville.com. It was pieced on 3 different machines, two borrowed and finally I bought one :). I hand quilted around each star and straight lines in the border on my new Qsnap floor frame. This is my second one handquilted and it took me right at 50 hours to finish.

I vow to never do another black quilt! I quilted with a lint roller in one hand!

Oh, that is a real beauty. I love the way that the black makes the other colors pop. You may want to reconsider your 'never'!

If you only had a few plants it probably wouldn't matter but I find leaving the space you have between the soil and the top of the cup makes watering infinitely easier. If you bring the soil all the way up to the top of the cup watering becomes a real pain in the neck! Also, I don't think adding another half inch of soil would really have much effect. Getting more of the stem in contact with soil is (IMO) absolutely correct advice but IÂd suggest re-setting the plants in the cups up to their first leaves and retain the space at the top for watering. Disturbing the roots doesnÂt hurt them at all and offers the caveat of slowing growth for a short time which might be beneficial in this situation where you are concerned about the length of time you have left before setting out in the garden. Noooooooo! Of course Colonial is a bad thing, LOL!! Not sure why, but that is one of the styles I really, really dislike. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, as when I think of Colonial Secretary, I see this: Flat front and sides, etc. In fact, if this piece would have had a regular flat front and carved feet, rather than the serpentine drawers and ball and claw feet, I likely wouldn't have bought it. I don't mind the hardware being that ever-so-popular Colonial style, as the rest of the "lines" of the piece can go another direction. ('course someone is likely turning over in their graves for all of the desecration and bastardization of style that I carry out!) These were two of my inspiration photos before I started working on it. The painted secretary was my true inspiration, but I realized I could NOT pull off that intricacy in painting, and I'm not a fan of decopage, so I abandoned that idea. The Edwardian Secretary is GORGEOUS with the inlaid wood, and I toyed with painting the drawers and flat fron a different color to mimic the style. Of course I ended up just doing a combination of several things, but I still don't think "Colonial" when I look at my piece, unless, of course I have something in between the scrolls. ;) Here is a link that might be useful: First two secretaries

You know typically I don't care for shorter length curtains but I think that you guys are dead on about that in this area and I think that it will look great. Les I really like the idea of the curtains hitting the sill. The windows are tall enough that I can still have total privacy even if they are hung 1/2 way down the window in a cafe style. Thanks guys - I can use my bench! Yay! I forgot to mention that the mudroom will tie into the kitchen remodel w/ the same colors but the blue will be on the ceiling in the kitchen as well as the beadboard cabinet backs in the 2 glass front cabinets and back of the built in coffee hutch. I'm looking at BM Spring In Aspen or Berber White for the cabinets, walls and trim. Both rooms will have a checkerboard floor. Do you think that I should paint the trim in the mudroom the same color as the cabinets and trim in the kitchen?

Thanks for the kind comments:) you made my morning. My niece graduated from the same high school I did, and the mascot is a Star (like the Dallas Stars hockey team). That's why we used so many starred fabrics. Kelly-NH, quiltdiva, biwako: The pattern is from an American Patchwork & Quilting Quilt Sampler magazine from 1996. It's called Karey's Star. The center star has set-in seams, including between the points. Then, the whole circle is appliqued onto a background square (Mexico Marti: curved seams? I don't think I'm up to that yet). From there very straightforward. wanda_va: my niece plays piano and trumpet, so I wanted to include that a little. sunnycentralfl: writer's cramp-lol! I used the keyboard to avoid that :) scraphappy-I love the idea of tearing up the index cards when done. Real closure. Off to decide which WISP is next... Cheryl

WooHoo! It may be taking you awhile to finish these WISP's but I think they're well worth the wait. That is a very pretty quilt. tell your boy 'he done good' picking out those fabrics. And I like the back too.

Wow, Canna! Your son's got a good eye for color. And you're not too shabby at quilting, either.

Great job, I really like the way the black brings out the vibrant colors--like jewels against black velvet.

I love it! I am partial to black quilts - the first one I made for my son was black also! It was an oversized twin and I hand quilted it also - used black thread. I have a black quilt on my frame now (queen-size plus) ... it's been there 3 years - needless to say, I don't sit down & work on it enough! It will eventually go on MY bed!

Very nice work - your son is lucky!

Fantastic! Stunning use of color! Did you hand quilt with black thread on the black background??? OMG, girl! I'm another one that said I would never make another black quilt. But then I asked for fall leaves on a black background for my birthday blocks for 2007 - ha!

Thank you girls for the kind words! My son loves bright colors and is really into space and science in general, so the stars were perfect for him. Oh and dragons too! One of his favorite books is Eragon. I found the backing fabric after seeing an ad for sewbatik in the F&P magazine and showed it to my son and he said you gotta get that Mom! And, it was only $5 a yard! I think I still have enough to make him a pillowcase.

I have three cats, one of which is all white, and they of course love quilts. When it was in the frame, they would lay on it and if it was spilling onto the floor off the side, they would lay on it. I took the frame apart yesterday and they were searching for it, LOL!

I did use black thread to quilt with, YIKES! I could only work on it during the day. My son had picked out variegated thread and I was going to machine quilt it, but it wasn't turning out very good. I didn't know if I could hand quilt with the variegated thread, so I used black (plus I didn't want my wonky stiches to show). I have plans for another quilt with black, but I just don't know. I may change my mind in the future, I do love the way black pops out the colors.

It is amazing! I love the dappled effect of the colors. A quilt with black is on my list, but I doubt it will be as pretty as yours.

WOW,That's Gorgeous. I also made one of my sons a black quilt several years ago,only his has very bright tropical fish on it.I didn't quilt his though ,i tied it.
