Growing Tomatoes

Will these seedlings last another 3 weeks? (Pic)

I have about 3 more weeks till I can plant outside. I'm hoping I don't have to re-pot them as it's such a pain. I'm wondering if they are too tall. I am putting afan on them every day now to sturdy them up and in a week or so will harden them up. I just hope I can last naother 3 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. THX in advance.

I think they would be okay for another 3 weeks,,they don't look all that tall..and they do look happy. I would top off the cups with whatever growing mix your are using all the way to the top and make sure they have drainage holes. Keep up your fan regimen.

This will sound wild, but I had to leave once for almost a month. My concern was the Sun being out of position where I had my seedlings near the kitchen window. After researching the rotation of the Earth, for that period, I ended up using the kitchen window. There they'd get about an hour a day of good light, but not hot or too brilliant. I took a small dia drill bit, and put a few very small holes in the bottom of my plastic dish, covered the dish with plastic top but not fastened down. I then inserted a small piece of 'wicking' that I acquired at Home Depot into the side of the dish. After that, I placed the dish on top of a folded kitchen towel, and turned the faucet on to do a drop about once a minute and put the wick underneath at the corner of the container... and where the drop of water would hit near it. Gone 3 weeks, and returned, (I was concerned that the faucet would stop dripping, but it didn't) and my seedlings were singing in chorus and had grown over an inch, and in perfect condition! And the kitchen towel? It was only damp enough to keep the wick moist which worked fine. It was surprising, and wild, but it worked. A few seedlings though, were suffering a little, but they promised not to tell anybody if I never did that again! lol

Paul, LYNN ANDERSON is a nice rose, but she doesn't repeat very well for me. She tends to grow about 6ft tall, and makes a nice plant for the back of the border, but the bloom production just isn't there. Could be my crappy soil, and the fact that she's in a somewhat shady spot too. Altho I have other roses near her that bloom well. So I dunno? Maybe the others aren't as fussy. And maybe she just needs some extra fertilizer and mulch to be happy. You may have better results in your situation. Thanks Florence!! Hey Kate! Yeah it was nice to get some of the potted ones in the ground. And some of them are already happier than they were in the pots. But this morning I see the deer have been back! Auuggghhhh!! Guess I'll have to spray my repellent today. Dangit!

Not sure of what there is...I haven't really experimented with that kind of editing or I should say Have tried with a free program a while back and decided that kind of editing with learning curve takes up more time than I care to spend on...Actually I like the way it looks---light fog and the railing adds interest...just my mho...nice shots of the other but really like the second one of those two!

Looks like you are growing them in a window. Are you using any fluorescent lights? Either way it looks like they will last another 3 weeks (at least). I grow mine in 2" cells till they are 8 to 12" tall so your container size should be large enough. If you are only using sun light to grow them I would rotate them daily so they don't end up leaning in one direction (towards the light).

Those plants are going to be perfect in three weeks. Get a little more light on them for a couple of weeks and then get them out for a little "yow! this is what I have to live in"- done gently- hardening off- for the last week and they will be ready to go.

Mine are a lot more leggy than yours so you should be ok. You are in z6 Ore and you are planting out in 3 weeks? I am in z8 WA and thought I had to wait until May.

mines are higher and i still got at least 6 weeks to go. If I where you i would have bury the stem all the way up to the leaves but what you did is ok. I would do what atascosa recommended about toping the cup with the growing mix you are using.

If 3 weeks to go is right, If i where you i will start exposing them slowly outside when the days permitted. There are plenty of information online in regards training the plants to outside environment. Good luck!

If you only had a few plants it probably wouldn't matter but I find leaving the space you have between the soil and the top of the cup makes watering infinitely easier. If you bring the soil all the way up to the top of the cup watering becomes a real pain in the neck! Also, I don't think adding another half inch of soil would really have much effect.

Getting more of the stem in contact with soil is (IMO) absolutely correct advice but IÂd suggest re-setting the plants in the cups up to their first leaves and retain the space at the top for watering. Disturbing the roots doesnÂt hurt them at all and offers the caveat of slowing growth for a short time which might be beneficial in this situation where you are concerned about the length of time you have left before setting out in the garden.

No need to pot them up, and no need to worry about them. You will be in good shape in three weeks. If the ground is cold in three weeks, no need to rush them into it.

Those babies are fine. Keep the fan going on them occasionally.
