At last...at last...Shakespeare is done!

Finally! I feel like I've spent all year working on this quilt! I think I started it in February. It's my niece's high school graduation gift - hey - I'm only a couple months late! I told her I have so much time in it that when she graduates from college I'm just going to put a new label on it. :)

A couple of my quilting designs (still with little bits of paper in some places):

Now I can finally move on to something else!

I'm sorry if my first post sounded critical or unsympathetic. That was not my intent. I was simply offering "thoughts" that you had initially asked for. So, just answers to your questions. I would not shift compost from one section to another. I would move any unfinished food or bedding (the paper you have in section #3) into the active feeding section. Bedding is food if kept damp enough. I would also make sure that each section is touching the sections beside it. Visually, your lateral migration bin appears to be similar to the compost pile turning system. But in your case you would not need to "turn" a section until it was either ready to harvest or it was needed because the final section was full. Ideally section #1 would be ready to harvest just as #6 was getting full. In your original post you describe each of the 4 sections. It sounds like it's working exactly as it should. The majority of the worms are in the newest section where the prime food is. Just continue the progression and harvest #1 when #6 is almost full. I'm sure you've noticed that a section compresses (reduces in volume) as the worms process it. For that reason, I would fill each section to the brim (instead of 2/3 full) before starting to feed the next section. If you look at the height of material in each section from the side, you would see something like a cross-section of stairs. It won't be this clean cut, but imagine #1 = 4" depth, #2 = 6", #3 = 8" and #4 = 10". Since you are using one of the sections to store bedding, you really have 5 working sections. Harvest #1 when you fill #5. I would not "...leave the whole box alone for a few months after I've cycled through the sections maybe twice". Based on the dimensions you cited, each section holds ~8 gal. of material. With the volume reduction you will end up with 5-6 gal. of material to harvest. I personally would do a quick light/pile harvest to remove the larger worms and use the VC as-is. If you want the coffee grind look, then you'll need to screen with 1/8" or 1/4" hardware cloth and dump the chunky remains into #2 to process a little more. Andrew

Patti, This is difficult & only you can make the decision. Will offer my experience with both Mom & Dad. Mom is placed in a private Adult Foster Home living with another family & that has proven to work out well. Are there any where you live? She has constant supervision altho' not with hospice yet. They have had help with hospice with others in the past, tho'. There is no way I could take care of my Dear Mom with her dementia & visiting has been more meaningful for us. Right now Dad is in the hospital after my DH & I moved him from out of state to independent living, then assisted living & now we're uncertain what's next after he had a head injury (not brain injury) from a fall at his apt last week. This all has been within 4 months. We'll be making a decision, also, on what is next for his living situation. It's hard & I pray for guidance as the answer usually comes when we need it. Hi ladies: First, to answer Laurie's question, I think urine should be slightly acidic to help prevent bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall (or kill it altogether)? Something like that.... Although, the vet did say that it's good to keep fluids going through her to keep her bladder "washed out", too. Casey had another bout this morning, although not quite as bad as it was yesterday. And like yesterday, by afternoon she was back to her usual peeing (still about every hour). I collected a urine sample this afternoon and took it to the vet. They called right about closing time saying there was "something in it" and the vet wanted to put her on ABX again. I couldn't get there before it closed, and since Casey seems her new usual self, I'll get it in the morning. I was looking back at her previous urine analysis (last fall), and it showed a pH of 5. That's a tad below the range of 5.5....to whatever. Maybe she has some crystal formation--I'll ask the vet tomorrow about today's pH results. Strange that she has a worse problem w/ frequency in the morning time. It's maddening, isn't it? Not always being able to figure out what's going on with your pets. If there's nothing to be done (like if she had bladder cancer or something), at least I'd know that. Not knowing the cause makes you think you haven't done enough to try and help the situation. Thanks Diane! I know what you mean by how fresh looking some of these roses are. Take a look at the new growth on Pope John Paul II who seems to think it's spring. The photo below is from two days ago. I had tons of new growth last month on Brother Cadfael and Paradise Found, both of which are still blooming. Here's Broceliande still blooming with another bud on the way. summers - your roses are fabulous and must be very tough to make through a 6a zone every winter! It's stunning, and I am getting more and more interested in this pattern! Since the 9-to-4 with batiks didn't turn out well, I still need to find something that will look good on our queen-sized bed. I'm interested in how you chose those beautiful colors, too!

Very nice indeed - love the color blending. If you started that in February of this year that's only four months. Doesn't seem like a long time to me with all the work involved.

Oh, gosh, you've all got me blushing! Thank you so much for the wonderful compliments!

About the colors...her mom said she likes pastels, and I knew she likes purples, so I just kind of decided to go with the green, purple, blue palette. I bought a few "starter" fat quarters back in Jan. and augmented it with my stash. After I decided to use that dark green all the way around the outside I found out her college colors are green & white!

We showed it to her on Father's Day before the binding was done, and she really loved it. We're going to "officially" give it to her on July 4.

I meant to comment on your cat, too. What a gorgeous plume of a tail, and I love the four white feet! Not that you had anything to do with THAT design, lol! Is the cat trying to scent mark the quilt by rubbing it with his/her mouth?

Ha, Biwako, Penny supervises everything I do! She spends most evenings scooched up against me on the sofa, and when I'm sewing she's usually nearby keeping an eye on everything!

It is beautiful!!! You certainly did a wonderful job, her site touts this as a quilt for beginners, I did wonder about that. If you had problems I know I would!!!!

Rosa, it's a lot of pieces and lots of triangles, so lots of bias edges. I don't know that I would class it exactly as beginner level! After I got all the blocks done I pinned them to my pressing pad to make sure they were the right size and starched them all before I assembled the top. The outer edges are all bias b/c of the triangles, too, so you have to handle it carefully.

I had to come back and look again. It's just one of those WOW quilts. They don't come around everyday. Some quilts are OK, Some are nice, some are beautiful, but yours is WOW.

Thanks again, everyone! I was on Judy Martin's website yesterday looking at all the "Shakespeares" people have emailed her. It's amazing how much a little color change can make such a big difference in the look of the same design.

Marti, I think it's queen size, and no - it's rectangular. I just pinned it to my Roman shades to take a picture and got it off to one side and was too lazy to do it again! :)

That is truly a spectacular quilt - love the colors you used! You should be proud of that, and the recipient will be thrilled, I'm sure! Now, maybe you need to make YOU one? I think quilts give off pheromones to cats - mine always shows up to be in the pictures, too.
