can we set undermount sink in cabinet at 90 degrees?

Hi everyone..

I have a small 8" x 18" undermount prep sink that I want to put in an 18" cabinet... BUT i want it to run from front to back in the cabinet (instead of side to side). Is this possible? (i would guess so, but i'm not sure:)

The faucet would then sit along the length of the sink.

I would think you could mount the sink however you wanted. As long as you can modify the plumbing to suit within the cabinet it should be fine.

Just remember you might need to modify the cabinet to accept the sink depending on the outside demensions of the sink bowl and the inside dimensions of the cabinet.

How far back were you thinking of mounting it?

Hi Writersblock! What were you thinking would be a concern? Here's what we know from our install-- let me know if there's something we missed! The edges of the sink when undermounted are the same height as all the cabinets in the sink run, so while the sink probably bears some weight, it bears no more or less than any of the other cabinets in the run. The countertops in ANY sink run aren't supported continuously-- they're supported periodically along the run by cabinet sides. Whether the weight is supported at any particular point by a wooden cabinet edge or a porcelain sink edge shouldn't really matter at any rate-- we're only talking about a few hundred pounds of wood, tile or stone. The only time you'd have a problem is if someone screwed up and raised or lowered a cabinet (or a sink, I guess) so far that you'd cause a stress crack. So as long as all the cabinets and undermount sink are the same level, unless someone did something REALLY strange, havig a thick, sturdy (and the Domsjo is nothing, if not that) porcelain sink bear its fair share of countertop weight shouldn't be worth a second thought.

Patches: Yes, very handy that the soap dispenser can put soap in either sink with this set up. However, it looks like you'd HAVE TO use the pulldown on the faucet to fill the big sink or fill a pot sitting in the big sink. The "reach" of the faucet spigot only comes to the top of the sink bridge. Is that a good thing? Doesn't look so handy from my photo view of this set up.

I recently stayed at an airbnb on a small island that had a wooden countertop with an undermounted sink. It was a little cottage that had been built in the 1920s. The owner said he hadn't done anything to the counter when he bought the cottage 6 years earlier or since, except replace a small section of countertop where the old hand pump had been before electricity had come to the island. It was edge-joined cypress (face up). It looked heavily varnished but the wood was in great shape and looked fantastic after 100 years. In no way would I shy away from an undermount sink with butcher block if I was willing to invest a little care. It's a beautiful look. I'm trying to figure out a way to install an undermount sink in one of the new IKEA "butcherblock" countertops, which are really only a thin layer of wood on an MDF core. The laminate-friendly sinks from KARRAN look promising, but they're made to mount flush into an MDF surface which then has laminate installed over the sink and trimmed away. I have to work out a way to rout out the MDF from underneath and leave only the solid wood over the sink and make sure it all gets sealed up. I haven't seen anyone on the internet do this, so I might be venturing out on my own.

I'm reviving one of my old threads with some progress. I managed to pick up a 36" Kraus Stainless Steel sink on Woot for $200, so thtat is what we are going with. We found that we can get some good stock size windows, and use the same trim style I put up in the rest of the downstairs and it will look something like this Here is the trim I from the dining room I just finished: Here is the island that we put in the kitchen, doors were added later and can't find the good pic... Couple of the cool features... First is the step for my daughter. The drawer uses heavy duty self closing slides. It locks in place, and she can slide out the step piece. The other is the pull out pot racks: I actually had two threads on kitchen design. We had a few things we would run up against. The fridge cannot be moved due to several issues. Also the fact that my wife was dead set against several "good" layouts. We ended up taking several ideas and notes from those threads and came up with what we have now. The island ended up a LITTLE bigger than we wanted, but we have 40" inches between the dishwasher and island, as well as the fridge and island. I was hoping for 48" on the other sides, but I think I ended up with 42 and 44" Overall it's not bad. The only issues we've had is that if the fridge door is open all the way we can't walk past, the kids fit fine ;) We finally finished the one side of the kitchen, and hope to start the rest very soon...

We have a 13" x 18" (inside dimensions) Blanco Precision Medium size sink. It can be mounted either direction. We have the the 18" longer side running front to back and with some work managed to get a faucet mounted behind it (in a standard 24" deep base cabinet.)

btw, are you sure you want such a narrow sink? Its versatility will be impacted by the 8".

Hi all,

Lululemon, i was thinking of centering it on the 24" depth, but pulling the 8" dimension closer to the outside of the island so i can fit the faucet in behind it.

zelmar, i'm hoping it will be fine. I really fell in love with the 8" x 24" or 8x30" sinks, but found this one on a great price.

I did exactly that but I centered mine longways in 2 18 inch deep cabinets across my island. The faucet is on the side. Mine is the Kohler undertone 22 inch x 8 inches.

Here are my thoughts about these sinks...

PROS:
Useful at parties to hold wine on ice.
Good to sweep crumbs in to wipe up island
Good to fill up with water and cleaner to clean and wring out cloths.
Good to fill up a glass of water.

CONS
Too narrow. It really is good for icing drinks, small cleanup and taking a quick drink. You can't wash anything without water getting everywhere. Even wetting a sponge spills water onto the countertop.

expensive: sink cost $600, faucet $400, soapstone cutout $150, plumbing $1000 to run lines, garbage disp $200. Total $2500 for this total waste of space.

If I could do it again, I would get a more functional wider sink. 8 inches is really too narrow for use as a prep sink. I am just trying to help you out as no one told me when I chose that sink. Here's a pic...

Yes, you can turn any sink 90 degrees. An8" wide one, or a bigger one too.
