I realize now that they are, but I'm having trouble downloading them. It wants me to put my credit card and postal code in, but I don't want to buy anything. I just want the freebies.

She can use the ones from pixel of ink if she installs calibre free to change the file format to epub. There are also several good converters online she can use with out installation. There's many sites for free epub books more than for kindle. Usually also if you check the same book offered through pixel can be found at the Barnes and Noble ebook store in their freebie section. One of my favorite free epub sites is feedbooks.com If you google free epub books several sites will show up.

Jannie, are you close enough to another county to check that library system? That might be the way to go. As someone who tends to be a critical reader, I find it useful to check the negative reviews on Amazon. If they say the book is badly in need of an editor (or assorted other complaints), I know I won't enjoy it. The positive reviews could be sincere, or they could be written by friends of the author. That sort of thing is done all the time.

ladyrose65, I'm including the link to a website called Pixel of Ink. You can sign up for a daily email with free Kindle and Nook books. Some books are simply discounted, but many are free (usually for a limited time). And here is a Youtube video on getting free Kindle/Nook books. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdqkhVo0F8M Enjoy your new Nook! Here is a link that might be useful: Pixel of Ink

Do I have to open an Amazon account? I don't want to give them my credit card number just to get free e-books.

jasdip you have to have an Amazon account, it will look just like you are making a purchase but the amount will be zero nothing billed but for any thing on the site you have to set up an account then use that info to log in and from then on it will let you do the one click and you can select to send it to your kindle for pc or which ever place you want to send it. That is how it can keep all your books for you in your amazon online locker/archive.
