Hello everyone! Got home from rehab yesterday and will begin home therapy today.

The doctors and therapists are impressed with how well I'm doing and so am I. :)

What pain I do have is being managed well. My surgery leg sure is swollen and am keeping it elevated when I'm not walking around the house.

I'm glad to hear you're doing so well. Keep doing the exercises they give you. I had both knees done in 2011, 4 and a half months apart.....6 months since the last one. I had more problems with the 2nd. He just reminded me again last week that exercising is the key to getting as much mobility in my legs as possible.

Well, they definitely can't freeze, so I don't know if that would work or not. Here in Michigan, it definitely would NOT work, since crawl spaces freeze. In your climate (N.C., I assume), I don't know if it would freeze under there or not. I don't know about sealing them up in a metal footlocker, either, I think they need to "breathe" a bit. If they were sealed, I think they might rot due to moisture buildup. I keep mine in my basement, which is fully heated and finished, in plastic rubbermade storage bins, with the lid off, and they keep just fine. Could you just store them in a closet, pantry, etc. Or perhaps even in a drawyer in a bureau, etc., in a plastic container with no lid, to make sure they don't rot and damage the wood? Other alternative -- process them somehow -- they can be canned (but MUST be done in a pressure canner, since they're low acid), frozen, or dehydrated. Or, just eat them as fast as you can in the fall, I guess. Up here in the north, although you can buy them year round, and some products like sweet potato fries are beginning to show up on restaurant menus and in stores, they are still mostly a fall and holiday (Christmas and Easter dinners) type food.

It's a bit late to grow your own slips, but it is really easy to do. I never buy plants. Instead, in early Spring I put a sweet potato in a glass of water, so about half of it is submerged. In a couple of days you will see roots begin to grow in the water. In a week or two, shoots should start sprouting from the upper half. When the shoots are four or five inches long, snap them off and place them in another glass of water. The shoots (or slips) will grow roots and leaves. These are your baby sweet potato plants. One large sweet potato will produce dozens of slips. The trick is to find a sweet potato that has not been treated with a chemical that inhibits sprouting. Your best bet is an organic sweet potato, or one you've grown yourself. This Spring I used a very large, rather gnarly sweet potato from last Summers harvest that had already begun to sprout. I got at least two dozen slips from it, and it is still producing!

What I referred to as scion wood on this leaner is all perpendicular type top-growth (watersprouts ?). Looks to me as if the tree did a forced growth response for itself as one last flush of renewal growth in it's attempt to extend it's life. And ya harvestman, that thought was occurring to me as I typed my response last eve. I really do wish I had snitched one as a youngster. Didn't want to have to explain that one to pa though - HA! I will definitely inquire as to palatability when conversing with the current owners. The 6/7 or so fruits I saw hanging on it earlier this Fall seemed fairly bright yellow and with good size. Hence, my assumption towards it being a Bartlet or similar type. Then one day they were all mostly on the ground. Next time by they had all been gathered up. This tree is on a route that I regularly take traveling through town, so I have regular drive by looks at it.

@NhBabs (4b-5aNH) Im in Ghana actually. no where near the States. so i dont have to worry about too cool a season even though its supposed to be the rainy season now. (thats the coolest its gonna get). They can get that large huh? thanks for letting me know. thanks pitcom...guess i was worried for nothing! @vgkg ouu....i shall do exactly that. can't wait for them to start giving sweet potatoes back. you make it sound simple that i have hope to cultivate a green thumb. such useful info ^-^ All i have to do know is look for a larger space in this house and ill keep you guys posted! :D Heres an update. the rooted one's sprouts are ready i think to be planted. i think the one that didnt root well isnt growing any further. so i'll just take the sprouts ive gotten so far and plant them.

The PT exercises are so *boring*, but you'll be glad you did them when you're out and about again. I bet you'll improve even faster now that you are out of a 'sick' environment. Welcome back to walking!
