Where do I purchase potatoes/sweet potatoes for the home garden?

I'd like to plant potatoes in my home garden this year. I'm new to this and am not sure how it is best to plant and when. I know sweet potatoes do well here, but what other potatoes are good to have? Please provide me with any suggestions on where to purchase or how to start myself, etc.

Best thing is to contact your local cooperative extension service office. They will provide you with the answers.

Try Wood Prairie, they are all about potatoes. I just got their catalog in the mail. I've not ordered from them, but had considered it. If you do order from them, let me know how it goes.

Will they grow? If they do nothing in 2 weeks [after transplanting] or are very weak then, they probably will not do much. I tend to get those little ones too with my order. I usually put 2 of those together. I like to soak them after they arrive in a bucket with 3 inches of water overnight [keeping the leaves up out of the water] and this gets them ready for setting out.

robbiemac~I just stumbled upon this thread and I have to say, it sounds like you're off to a great start! Congrats on all the HARD work you've done so far, that is the real secret to success with organic production methods. :) I don't have that much experience with vegetables, may I ask do sweet potatoes have the same type of vines as the ornamental SPV grown in containers, how are they different? Just curious. If JB is a problem in your area (it is now in mine), I suggest you inoculate the surrounding grass fields with milky spore (Bacillus popillae), it takes a few years to build up. This is where the grubs feed. Happy Gardening!

Right, at the level of the seed piece and somewhat higher, the tuber-bearing filaments come off the stalk as long as it is kept covered with soil or mulch. Generally speaking once the stalk is quite green it will no longer make tubers from that point, which simply means the plant will put more energy into fewer tubers not necessarily less yield. I make a shallow trench to put the seed into and cover with one or two inches of soil. In the bottom of the trench first goes compost unless the ground is fairly rich. A sprinkling of epsom salt is good and wood ashes if you have any. When the plant is vigorously growing N can be supplied with urine diluted 5 or 10 to one with water. Potatoes like tomatoes are highly symbiotic with mycorhizzae. If you can find old wood chips or twigs with fungi on them toss them in the compost in the trench and soak the trench good of course. One can also buy the spores by mail and inoculate the compost or rotted manure, etc. Once the garden area is well grown out with myco you're all set if you don't till too much, keep the OM up, don't let the ground get bone-dry with means don't let it be bare for long periods. Even weeds help. Every common crop family except brassica needs the myco's for optimum health.

That sounds great! I was just lurking on the Winter Gardening forum. OHMIGOD! I am sooo excited about it. There is very little room in my house for seed flats, so the Winter Gardening thing sounds great. That will let me give my limited space over to projects like the sweet potato. smile! I was so worried that having moved up to Canada from Maryland I would have to curtail my outdoor gardening all winter. Instead I'm discovering whole new avenues of gardening! (I'm sure my poor houseplants are breathing sighs of relief. I've been bugging them non-stop since I got my bulbs in.) So how do I do it? I take a sweet potato and... do I cut it up? stick it in a jar like an avacado seed? I don't see "eyes" on the sweets the way I do on the whites. Thanks for your indulgence, Feegle

In NW Phoenix you can get seed potatoes at Sunrise Nursery, 59th Ave and T-Bird. Just south of T-Bird on west side of the street. I bought 3 varieties:

Yukon Gold
Red La Soda and
Red Russet

I think you should start them now. It's my understanding that the sweet potatoes like our hot temps. White russets do not do very well here.

Baker Nursery in central Phoenix (40th St. and Osborn) usually sells tubers and sprouted young plants in late spring, so they may be an option for you.

They also sell the ornamental sweet potatoes too (like 'Blackie' and 'Margarita' etc), but most years they have the culinary types too.

A buddy of mine placed a potato half ways in water (chop sticks through it) and allowed it to root. It grew many roots and began to send vines. She gave me the plant. I planted it, but didn't take care of it (shame on me). It can be done.
