Yes the new spacing taught when I took a course a few years ago was to use only one space. I can't make myself do it.

Many of the celebrities are really out there prostituting themselves for dollars. I mean, do they really use the products attached to their name? Kathy Ireland is attached to jewelry at Littman's, windows at Best Window...REALLY?

Green Bags, I love them. I know lots do not but I used them faithfully and salad is one of the things I love best with them. Right now if you open my fridge you will find: lemons, pears, romaine, carrots, bell peppers, green beans and kale. All in green bags.

My thumbs automatically do a double space at the end of a sentence. But when on my iPhone it's a real toss up, tho I usually use a double space there as well.

I don't have an opinion on redundant ads or green bags but, I do have a comment on double spacing.

I also double space automatically like most of us "of a certain age." I have noticed that my computer removes the extra space, as I'm pretty sure yours does too. Check out the other posts and see if there is only one space and tell me if you don't think so too.

I had to switch to the single space more than 10 years ago, when I was a newspaper reporter. It was difficult at first, but I made the transition surprisingly quickly because I had no choice. :-)

I believe GardenWeb posts use one space automatically, no matter how many you put in.

Regarding the two spaces... that went out with the typewriter!

Keyboarding class taught one space - back in the 80s; so it's nothing new or recent.

I've finally stopped double spacing - but tyhat's only because my computer sill highlight the extra space if I use 2.

I read a Consumer Reports article that the green bags do not prolong the life of produce.

As for redundancy - one of my English professors even pointed out that it's in the Constitution...not the right to be redundant, but the phrase "in order to form a more perfect union." If your union was perfect you can't make it more perfect. But he did acknowledge that it sounded better the way the Founders expressed it.

Unfamiliar as I am, I should have little to say, I guess ... but were I prone to having periods ...

I got some "green" bags free after rebate but haven't tried them yet. I don't have too much trouble and what I've read their uses are not recommended for everything anyway. And as I recall there's instructions on how to use them - you don't just put the stuff in there. Have to double check to be sure since my memory can be lacking at times.

I usually double space when typing but wind up single spacing when texting since it's limited to 150 characters. Also there's more abbreviations used, less punctuation and poorer grammar too.

Shall we talk redundancy? How about "irregardless" and "inflammable" on the door of the Department of Redundancy Department?

I hate the single space at the end of a sentence. I find it much harder to read just like all caps are harder to read.

I don't care what's right today. I learned 2 space and that's the way I'm gonna type it. I also have a problem with a comma with "and". I was taught "Cars, planes and trains." Not "Cars, planes, and trains." The comma is not needed.

The only times that I use a single space after a period are when texting (although I don't always just single space when texting) and in forms where you are limited to a set number of characters. And in those forms I eliminate a lot of commas, as well as using an ampersand instead of writing out the word "and."

Lindy, I was taught that it is correct to use a comma before the word "and" when writing three or more "things," such as your example of "cars, planes, and trains."

I learned to single space after a period about 20 years ago when I stopped using a typewriter and started using a computer which was called a "word processor" then. It is almost the same as not hitting the enter key when you get to the margin.

If the Colonel was still alive, he couldn't hold a candle to Chick-fil-A. I have never seen a KFC full, all tables taken (I don't go in there very much).

Let KFC say what it wants. (Although, traditionally, aren't Sunday afternoon suppers with all the kids gathered at Mom's/Grandmom's house the picture of Americana?)

Those Chick-fil-A cows -- their print ads in the restaurant are much funnier than anything KFC has done -- will give KFC a good kick in the keister!

I used two spaces when I used a typewriter, but the fonts that are used on computers don't need two spaces between sentences.

Whoops....One more sign of my being 'over the hill', I guess. I have never heard of the single space at the end of a sentence. I used to type pretty fast, would skipping that space make one faster???? I did a refresher course in the early 80's....did not hear of it then either. Oh, the things we learn on our KT. Interesting that some think the single space goes back to the 80's. My daughter is only 30, which means she went to high school in the 90's, at a school that was VERY academic and highly rated, in a state that has some of the highest educational ratings in the country. It was she who brought this to my attention--with surprise--since SHE was taught to double space at the end of sentences. This is a gal who knows English, grammar, and compostion (side note--I was taught that it's a personal choice to use a comma before 'and'--either with or without is correct). She was planning on going into journalism, at one time. In college her English prof told her to skip class. Suggesting that she just take the tests and do the assignments, because the class was going to be a waste of time for her--she was way beyond what he was going to be teaching. She's also the one who all her friends ask for help composing their college and grad school theses. Judging by the number of them she's consulted on, she should have a half dozen degrees by now--LOL! Anyway, the point is, around here, this is only recently becoming the norm, apparently.

And, hey--thanks for the Chick-fila comments--I agree completely!!! KFC's are all closing around here, CF's food is WAY WAY better (and the stores are cleaner!), and oh, yeah--those cows are adorable!!!

I'm in my 20's and I was taught to double space. I was actually marked down in my 7th grade typing class in the 90's because I was single spacing. I will keep using double spaces as I prefer the look.

Cynic -- Has anyone met a 'gruntled' man -- before things went bad and he became 'disgruntled'? Perhaps he was happy until being 'reorientated'.

I have NO memory of being taught to double space after ending a sentence! I learned to type in sumer school in 1955. In 1956 I started to work on my school newspaper; maybe that's why I don't recall the double space rule.

hmmm...very interesting. It seems my computer will just show one space regardless of how many I try to insert, or that is how it looks when I preview it.

Regarding the spacing that one uses after a period, I doubt whether it's the message that your computer sends ... I expect that it's the way the computer at the printing end chooses to do the spacing as it puts it on to the page.

We have to give keyboarding tests for job applicants and I failed it because of the no double spacing rule. LOL Good thing I already had the job. I can say that my daughter learned to double space and she is only 20. I think it really doesn't matter.

As OJ mentioned, it's the forum that is changing it, not your computer. That's why you don't have to put 50 silly characters in a subject to add a posting shortly after you post. A single space is all it takes, but guess there's some old d, er some folks you can't teach! :)

If you go to your word processor and single, double and triple space, it will most likely look very different, even when done on the same computer as posting.

When I took the typing tests for employment at some places none of them penalized me for double spacing which is what I was taught. Granted I was taught typing on a typewriter.

Courier, letter gothic and other fonts were used on the typewriter and are used on the computer too so the font doesn't make any difference.

I had Chick-Fil-A, once, not impressed. Not too impressed with KFC either, though. Oh, I saw the Colonial's impersonator last year, at Kroger. One of the exchange students was with me so they had no clue what I was talking about. Can't remember his name but he dresses just like the original and looks very much like him. Haven't seen the commercial you're talking about.

I think I used green bags once or twice, never noticed a difference. Most produce we get her in KY is half rotten anyway. I need to move back to AZ.

I never realized the spacing thing had changed. I can barely keep up with the new technology....can barely text message. I hate my cell phone because I don't know all the functions and really don't want to spend the time to learn them all. I can play games on it, make a call, text message and take pictures...although taking pictures and then finding them again isn't easy. I also don't know how to call my voice mail unless I haven't deleted the message telling me I have a voice mail message. I've been trying to call my lawn care guy for days now, he left his cell phone number on my phone...but I can't find it. I call their office and leave a message but I guess because of all the rain they haven't yet come out to mow.

On my iPad, it automatically adds a period if I double space. Sometimes I don't WANT a period. I typed a list of my DHs meds on my iPad "notes" section and put in the name of the med, then added a couple spaces to enter the strength (mg) he takes, and it always puts a period after the name of the medication unless I go down a line. I understand many message boards remove the added spaces.

I used to do typesetting when I was a desktop publishing specialist. That's how I knew about it.
