Hardware layout advice -- incl. 'Cup pulls on desk drawer only?'

I am working on a hardware plan for our kitchen -- basically, planning on handles/pulls for drawers, with double handles for drawers >=30", knobs on doors, with exception of tall pantry, where we'll use pulls. We also have a "desk/hutch" area separate from the main cabinet runs, and I was thinking about doing cup pulls on that desk drawer.

Would it look strange to have that be the only set of cup pulls in the kitchen?

Here is the overall 3D look of the kitchen (except that the desk was raised to counter height after this drawing.) Pulls are Top Knobs M311, Knobs are Top Knobs M326, and cup pulls are TK M360. Cabinets are cherry, ginger stain (light to med), hardware is brushed satin nickel.

That's a nice look for a kitchen desk!

I think cup pulls would be fine there, and gentler on your belly if you sit in really close. :)

Hi celticmoon, thanks for weighing in. It's tricky because we're trying to be very careful not to overcapitalize. While we are in a nice neighborhood, it is still just a townhouse. And while we are very happy here for now, it's unlikely to be our forever-home. So we're trying to get the maximum bang-for-the-buck. I've been in several of the other townhouses in our neighborhood. Many of them have not been remodeled, but all the ones I've seen that have been remodeled have more or less retained this layout (in terms of walls, closet, sink and range). Most of them (both original and remodeled) have the fridge on the other side, often with just a table & chairs in the 60'' corner or in one case a kitchen desk. I'm not saying that this is therefore the best layout, just that it's the most commonly used. We had figured that putting counters and cabinets there would at least be an improvement in utility over a table and chairs. While one could argue that putting in a better layout would be a potential selling point in the future, I'm not sure that it would recoup the costs. I think that if we were planning to stay here forever, then maybe it would be worth going all out to get the best possible layout. But given our situation, we are really just trying to get an updated kitchen that looks inviting, with more functional storage space and appliances that don't smell like they're about to catch fire :) That being said, I am still considering all other suggestions very carefully and weighing the pros and cons. In some cases I'm finding that there seems to be a big difference between what looks best on paper and what seems like it would feel right when standing in the room. Has anyone else found this, or is it just me? I'm thinking it might be to do with the natural light that doesn't come across in drawings. I like your idea of blocking out the counter space with boxes as a test run. We generally tend to use the space between the sink and the range as our main prep space. Currently we use the space to the right of the range mostly as a landing space for getting things out of the cabinets above (where we store the food) and out of the fridge opposite. We also have our toaster here and use other small appliances here, as well as prepping things that don't involve the sink or the range. So in that sense I had figured that a counter on the opposite side would be used in much the same way. And we would still have 18'' on the right of the range. I will definitely take a closer look though at the idea of putting a CD fridge in its current location and see how that would work out. If we were to keep this general footprint though, what do you think of the cabinet choices?

If the drawer hardware is good you can likely get away with just one pull. Live with it awhile and see how hard the drawers are to open and close. If you find the drawers to hard to open and close after they are loaded up, you can try better drawer hardware if you have decided the appearance is acceptable with a single pull. Older houses often had no real drawer hardware, just wooden drawers on wooden rails. Large drawers often needed two pulls to even get them open.

jpmom, I chose Restoration Hardware pulls, a bunch of different ones for different rooms. I went with them because my sister did a big reno ten years ago and used a fair bit of RH cab hardware in the granny unit our parents live in half the year. They've held up beautifully. RH still has many of the same lines, most in several finishes. Then I caught a good sale which helped with the cost. For my white shaker cab kitchen with soapstone countertops, as well as the dining room built-ins, I chose their Bistro pulls in ORB in a variety of lengths, depending on drawer size. I think I have something like 60 pulls for the kitchen and DR. RH Bistro Pull The RH lines look a lot like the Top Knobs lines. There are small differences in detail, but they look like siblings. I didn't order a bunch of samples because I had the examples in my sister's house. I also looked carefully at the knobs and pulls in Houzz photos of kitchens I love.

Laundry Room...you have family and close friends coming in through the Laundry Room. I don't know about you, but I would not want the first thing family and close friends see when they enter my home to be dirty laundry (or even clean!) I don't like doming into someone's home and seeing their dirty laundry either - I don't care how close a friend or family that person is! A Mudroom is fine, and I heartily agree with, but not the Laundry Room. If there's any way you can at least put a wall & door that can be closed b/w them, I strongly suggest you do so. . Desks in kitchens...are clutter magnets and become dumping grounds for everything no one immediately knows what to do with, so I recommend not putting a desk in the Kitchen. In fact most people who have one say it's the first thing they want to get rid of when they remodel! First, I recommend putting in a Message/Command Center near the Mudroom where the family enters. This is where keys, the family calendar, notes from school (with a way to break out by child), mail (with some kind of sorting system), purses, cell phones & chargers, answering machine (if you have a landline), directories, etc., would go. By placing it in or near the Mudroom, it will be the first place someone encounters to drop mail, etc., and it will be far less likely mail and other items will end up cluttering the rest of the house. You can also check the family calendar when entering/leaving the house, be reminded of school notes, see notes someone left for you, see if you have phone messages, drop your keys when you get home and pick them up as you walk out the door, etc. These are all things most of us need to see/be reminded of when entering and/or leaving home. It becomes more important when your children reach school-age, as you probably are finding out now with the 7-year old (and possibly 5-year old). Think what it will be like when all four are in school! Next, see if you can create a "homework/study" nook where each child can have their own space (to avoid fights), preferably, with some space b/w them (again, to avoid fights!). You want it to be somewhere fairly public so you can see what they're doing when young and to encourage them to use their computer in that space. I know that many people allow their children to use the computer in their bedrooms, but that can lead to unwanted consequences such as children accessing things they should not be. Yes, with the proliferation of smart phones in the pre-teen and teen age group (and in some cases even younger) it can be difficult to monitor what your children are doing online, but don't make it any easier for them! There is such a rise in porn, cyberbullying, etc., in part b/c parents have lost the ability (or desire) to easily monitor what their under age children are doing. [Sorry - I just hit a tender spot - I've had friends who have had their children bullied online (and resulted in one suicide) and who have had their sons get involved in pornography when using their laptops in their bedrooms, so I'm probably more sensitive to it than most. Off my soapbox!] Here are some thoughts: . This is just a general idea. E.g., the Closet & Message Center could be switched, if you prefer.

No. It won't look strange. I've seen all kinds of combinations of knobs, pulls, cup pulls, etc. And what I've noticed is that anything goes. If you like it, it will look good.

Disclaimer: I have three different hardware items on my cabs. Four if you count the fact that my uppers have a left and right.

Uppers: Left & Right Grape knobs, black with steel wash.
Lowers: drawers have satin nickel pulls, cabs have satin nickel knobs.

I had picked that combo out early in the process and toward the end I was doubting my choices. My sister said, You have a vision, stick with it. And she was right. When it comes to how things look, it's all about vision, and not about following some rules or standards that someone else thought of.

So how about cup pulls on top drawers and drawer pulls on the remaining drawers in the same drawer base? Anyone seen this done? (Boxer?) Would I be getting too whacko here? :)

Another option -- cup pulls only on the "desk" drawer and on the tilt-down drawer at the sink? Thoughts?

(I'm really liking fori's point about the cups being easier when you're up against the desk, and think the same reasoning would hold even more true at the sink drawer.)

Perhaps it is whacko to put cup pulls on top drawers and handles on all lower drawers, but that's just what we did. I wanted to include some cup pulls, but didn't like the idea of having to reach UNDER them to open the very low drawers. It's easier, I think, to snag a low handle from the top.

My kitchen is mnerg's cousin! Cup pulls on all upper drawers, handles on the remaining drawers, & knobs on cabinet doors. I did one large handle centered b/c the handle I chose came in 4 sizes.

Same combination of colors too. So naturally, mnerg, I love your kitchen!

Thanks to all for the advice so far. For anyone else trying to make the "mixing cups and pulls" decision, I found a great OLD post that included pictures of another kitchen where both were successfully mixed. Unfortunately, I can't post a link because it is archived, but it can be seen in the public clippings of user "abananie" (about 3/4 way down the page.) The kitchen pictured belongs to "jsweenc".

So -- as of now, I am thinking of keeping cups on desk drawer and sink drawer, with pulls on all other drawers and knobs on doors. One thing that still bothers me is that most of the "mixed" photos I have seen tend to mix cup pulls with very simple, modern pulls. My pulls are more traditional/transitional (see link above) -- will this be a problem?

I am visiting the KD to make the selections TODAY, so any advice/opinions are welcome!!

Well, hardware is ordered. Went with pulls on drawers (and trash pull-out/base pantry), knobs on doors, and cup pulls on desk drawer and sink tilt-out drawer. Final selections were Top Knobs M360 cup pull, M311 3 1/2 in bar pull, and M351 knob (all in brushed satin nickel.)
