Looking for kitchen layout advice
Comments (14)That's a good point, and that's a very good question. Peachymomo, what side of the glass door do you walk out of? It would be helpful if that arrow meant it was the kitchen side of that 8-1/2 feet. And you need to build storage along that wall... Depending on the number of diners, a table and chairs, or banquette could be set there and shallow wall storage built "around" it. My original shallow pantry that I copied for this house was only 30" wide/12" deep and held an amazing amount. A pair of them might flank a table and chairs or banquette. Like Debrak's sliding door picture, they could be part of a very nice composition. Just deep enough to hold a standard cereal box can be a great depth. I've forgotten, but probably around 9". Otherwise,it's looking like a very nice place to work on paper, but you're sounding like you're grieving a bit for a view of your garden growing--which really matters. Just thinking out of the (house) box, I'm guessing it's mainly an edible garden, right? As a gardener myself, if you were into decorative gardening I'd be pretty sure your deck and house wall would end up as garden adjuncts anyway. I'm more restrained these days, so my second-story porch only has one young wisteria growing along it, some plants in pots, and a bird feeder and birdhouse. Dawn's breaking outside, the birds are starting to sing and they'll be at the feeder I can see from here shortly. Attracting a lot of birds has done wonders for our insect problem (Georgia!), but we don't cover our handful of fruit trees, so their crops are basically ceded to them. Strangely, they mostly leave the figs alone. In any case, could your garden be moved to a more viewable position next year? Or a new section started? Do you have an herb garden yet? Right outside the kitchen is very nice. Depending on your climate, what sounds like a mostly south facing house wall could be a real asset for plants that need extra warmth and/or an early start....See MoreKitchen layout advice
Comments (35)OK, i'll try to explain our reasons for the home design. I know people might think that this layout is odd but we have put a great deal of thought into this house design. The house is large because we worked a large rec room(to help isolate those kids when they are teens and have friends over), home office(I run a home based business) and a great deal of storage into the basement, we can our own food among other storage needs. I know everyone lives their lives differently but my wife and I never had large eating areas. Now or growing up. I have never in my life had a eating table that would hold more than 4 people. The house design works on our lot, it's actually 4 acres, so that the porch and living room have the best view, followed by the master bedroom. The upstairs bedrooms also have a wonderful view with this design. The original plan does call for a kitchen table next to the stairs, I can always put one there in the future if we want. This is a picture of a standard design and layout with a table there. If I do that I will probably rebuild/add walls the front eating area for a small homework/craft area/storage/entry area or something else. I know this house isn't for everyone but we plan to live in this house for decades. We have looked long and hard for something that will fit our lifestyles. We must have the large mud room because we are going to have a small hobby farm and need an area to clean off and store outside gear that is easy to access. The design you see for the mudroom is not close to the final one. We won't have a back yard because out lot starts getting quite steep at the back of the house. Our yard will actually be off the sides of the home. I do appreciate all the concern that people are showing for this design. I know that it is a bit different but we have spent 3 years working on it and do believe that is will fit all of our needs in the way we live. We do still have to few tweaks to do and we are working on them. I know that post can sometimes come across as rude or inconsiderate but I really am grateful. It is amazing the so many random people would have concern for some random stranger on the internet. Thank you all so much for you help. Benje's tweak is a great idea and we might implement it in the future. I work in construction so I have no fear of changing the house. I could just arrange the headers of the front door and window in the dining area to make them interchangeable....See MoreLooking for input and advice on kitchen layout
Comments (2)You have very little prep space between the sink and cooktop. Since the window locations are flexible, I'd move the cooktop down, with a larger window over the sink and a smaller window on the other side of the hood. I moved the ovens and fridge toward the top wall, and made the island shorter--the fridge-to-sink path now intersects the island by only a few inches. There is now a tall pantry on the end. Can the hutch be recessed into the room behind? I tried making it shallower, but I don't think you have enough space for it, and seating. Comments (14)If you want an entry area, put up a wall and have one. We have a home now where someone knocked out the wall between the nice entry and the living room and we basically put the wall back with a shoe bench and shelf arrangement (freestanding because we didn’t want to do construction work) because it just flows better that way. We also just looked at another house which we decided not to go for after much deliberation in part because if we opened it up to get much needed space, we’d end up with a big box with the front door entering right into everything, like a small apartment layout. Houses, especially houses with kids and lots of visitors, need some way to control the flow of traffic and direct people to where they should take off coats and boots and what have you. If you have room for a mud room, great, but if not - entry area is a necessity, IMO. And people are going to be beyond bored with HGTV style everything probably sooner rather than later - next year or the year after it’ll be some other designer and they will be putting walls up because everyone is sick of open plan and always being on display while cooking. If this is your forever home then do what you like and what feels good to you, not what’s popular on HGTV. (If you were going to flip the house then I might be saying something different.) Personally, if my front door were that close to my kitchen, I’d really really really want some kind of wall for privacy. Who wants all your mid-meal cooking mess to be on display to anyone who comes to the door?...See MoreJillius
