I followed your suggestion on a file saved to my system and the file did not have the "read only" box checked, but when I open it ... it defaults to "file viewer" mode. When I try the same action on a file sent to me, selection of properties does not show the check boxes for read only, etc.

I've set up a database with close to three hundred names and addresses. I noticed that I had left an a name and address out that should be in a certain place on the list. I can't figure out how to "insert" a record into the list. I have "add new record", but there isn't any place that I can find that says to "insert" a new record. When I do the "add new record" thing, it goes to the bottom of the whole list...can someone tell me how to insert a record into this database...I've been aworkin' and athinkin' and can't seem to figure it out...help would be appreciated...

Regarding your original question, I think white cabinets and dark countertops would be great. I did this in the last place we lived - the kitchen was a different shape but also quite small. I have photos of it somewhere - I think on 3.5 disks - I will see if I can find the external drive and post them. Personally I love the look of white cabinets and black counter tops (since you don't have kids you can even go with painted). I agree with bmorepanic about the pocket door - we are putting some in and it will really make the space seem less cramped. And with michellemarie about putting a 24" depth cabinet above the fridge. You could store cooling racks, cookie sheets, etc. above the fridge. Or you can put a pull-out tray in there and just pull it out so you can access the whole space. Your garage is off your kitchen - are you able to use it for storage? My mom lives in CA and uses an extra fridge and tall cabinet (Ikea I think) for extra food storage (Costco etc.) and it works great. Can you remove the soffit above the upper cabinets to gain some additional upper cabinet space? Depending on how much space you need under your sink (will depend on how deep your sink will be, do you have a garbage disposal) you can do an inverted sink base. This is where you have a drawer on the bottom and all cabinet on the top (no pull out shelf).

Yes, that worked...at first, I just couldn't find that option, but I found it under "view" "tool bars" in case someone else needs to know this...thank you very much. Now...I don't think I had this problem before. I think...when I set up a table, the "show grid lines" and "hide grid lines" is what worked....so one of the updates must have changed this. I love it that I can come here and ask a question. I'm not sure that I would have ever dug deep enough to find this solution....
