I think I fixed the spacing issue but had to go to 9 pt to make Word 2010 look the same as Word 2003. My current issue is that centering a word or phrase as titles for a new part of a doc is off. They don't line up. I have deleted and redone each but they are all skewed slightly left or right. Thanks, Owbist. Your advice gratefully received.

If they are extremely important you might consider the thumb drive and a CD. No storage media is full proof. Though I have never had a thumb drive fail I have heard and read about it. I have had storage CDs fail. I am not sure if e-mails would open for viewing when stored on an external media. E-mails by design are in a .eml format. When you save an e-mail to a media you might want to save them in another format, perhaps .txt or html. This would allow them to be read directly from the storage media rather than having to import them into Outlook or having to install another application for reading. DA

Jane, when you click to open a document in Word look at the very bottom of the pop up window where you select the doc you need. Then click the small down arrow beside "Files of type:" scroll down the list to "Recover text from any file (*.*)", highlight that and open you document. Hope that helps you better

I followed your suggestion on a file saved to my system and the file did not have the "read only" box checked, but when I open it ... it defaults to "file viewer" mode. When I try the same action on a file sent to me, selection of properties does not show the check boxes for read only, etc.
