MS Office 2000 (which includes Word) works perfectly with XP. Since the behaviour occurs on the new computer as well as your original one I did a Google search and found numerous reports of this problem. Could it be that Word is trying to connect to your network? Had the problem only existed on your own computer then my first suggestion would have been: Assuming that you have the Word installation CD available (just in case it is needed), then I would start by opening Word, click on Help and then click Detect and Repair from the drop down menu. I teach in a very large high school. I am not the first to have the computer, and I think someone set the default to do this, but I cannot find a default that would indent like that. Would you happen to know where a default is that would cause something like this to happen? Or even tell me exactly what I do to just make it number the way it should for one paper? I have done it before, but more often than not, I have messed up the entire paper. Those rare times when it puts everything in order, I am not sure what I hit.
