Microsoft Word numbers

I teach school, and need to number a list.

When I write a simple vocabulary quiz, I may have 30 words. I can write the number, word, hit enter, and the next number will be ready.

This works until about number 10. At that time I get number 10, and it skips over about 7 spaces. From then on all of the numbers skip over and align to the 7 spaces.

Could you tell me how to get that off my computer? It is a default somewhere, and I cannot find it. I often will turn off the numbers and rewrite the test.

Friday I clicked to "automatically correct" (after my test was finished) and it changed all of my Spanish words to jibberish. The computer tried to make them English words.

I have been searching in format and tools. This has to be obvious, but I cannot find out how to get this off of the system. If once I get the number right, I don't remember how I did it the next time. Wherever there is a defaullt I have looked. Anyone should be able to do numbers.

Obviously it is the school computer. Microsoft Word. Windows 6. Dell. also XP.

I tried to do a bunch of numbers up to 10, but mine went okay. I've never heard of that happening.

You didn't accidentally hit the tab key on line 10 did you?

I would click on the show/hide button (on the toolbar-it looks a little like a music note) and see if there is a character in there somewhere.

You could always just do your word, click enter until your 30 words are listed and select them and apply 'bullets' to them.

Not much help probably, but I can't think of anything else.

I teach in a very large high school. I am not the first to have the computer, and I think someone set the default to do this, but I cannot find a default that would indent like that.

Would you happen to know where a default is that would cause something like this to happen? Or even tell me exactly what I do to just make it number the way it should for one paper? I have done it before, but more often than not, I have messed up the entire paper. Those rare times when it puts everything in order, I am not sure what I hit.

Mikie you seem to be partly right. I have Windows 7 and Office 2007 and Wordpad will open my .docx files. After your post I tried opening my older .doc files and you are correct they open as gibberish. While I am alone in the wilderness I still feel more people should save in RTF format to get away from being tied to MS. I have a neighbour looking for work and often he cannot submit a resume as requested in Word format as he has a Mac so he was coming here to submit. I created his resume in RTF and now his Mac Pages program accepts that and so do the companies where he has applied so far.

clairado, On the left hand side of mine are numbers that you can make bigger or smaller. Different versions are different. A friend had sent me the newest one and I hated it. I think I had that same problem with it being so small. I put my older one that is from 2004 back on. It is the easiest one. I made my address book and just click on the name and it is instantly made your label.

Try going to Format>Bullets and Numbering and check all the tabs to see the settings. Maybe there is something there that can help you.

I can't think of anything else in options that would effect that.

Can you do this in Excel and use column A for the number and column B for the word?

Again, you could type the word, enter and do this till all your words are there, then select the words and apply a numbered list to it. (bullets and numbering)

Does your school have an IT person to help find the problem?

I have gone to the bullets and numbering. I have tried almost everything. It is when I asked the wizard that it told me to do an auto correct, and it ruined all of my Spanish words.

My solution is to write the tests at home, or even write them at school, and format them at home. I just thought someone might know how to easily fix this.

Our IT person does not seem to be that good at Microsoft Office.

I have done the Excel, and that is a perfect solution. I need to do it.

I am using Word 2000 and can do a list following these steps: Make a list of words. Select the list with cursor. Then on tool bar, select Format, Bullets and Numbering. This results in a dialog box for choosing Bulleted, Numbered, or Outlined Numbered. Select Numbered. Then click one of the eight boxes that show the different styles - the eight styles begins with None. Then OK. Perhaps your version of Word will work the same and perhaps you did not click one of the eight styles other than None.
