Microsoft Word

My computer, Toshiba Satellite Vista, did not come with Microsoft Word. I do a small newsletter and receive a lot of information in Word. I can open it and read it and print it. But, I have to print it off and then retype everything. I'm not able to save it either.

I would like to know if there is a, preferably, free software that will allow me to do these things. If not, what would be a fairly inexpensive program to use with Word?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Might want to look at OpenOffice.org

Open Office should do the trick. There might be some minor compatibility issues, especially if you get into any kind of fancy formatting. The Home and Student version of Office is relatively inexpensive but is limited to non-commercial use.

I might also suggest that when you send out your newsletter that you convert it to a PDF file. Open Office will do that natively and there are any number of free programs you can download as well. By using the PDF format you eliminate any need for your readers to have Word and your formatting/appearance is preserved.

My gut reaction is that over time computers become slower as, for lack of a better description, get "clogged." It might not be a bad idea to back up critical data and then do a fresh install of the operating system and applications. You should also make sure that Office is being updated. I want to say that with Office 2000, it needs to be updated manually. You'll also need the original disc to do the updates. Of course, you should have current anti-virus software running and run malware software on a regular basis.

saving fonts on Microsoft Word for making labels

In word 2007 when you get your page of labels ready to type in the information click on the 'home tab' and in the section where you pick your font look on the bottom line of the ribbon and to the right of the word 'font' you will see a small square with an arrow pointing down to the right. Click on that square to open the font dialog box. After you set the font and all the attributes you want click on the 'default' button which is on the bottom left of the font dialog box. Yes, that worked...at first, I just couldn't find that option, but I found it under "view" "tool bars" in case someone else needs to know this...thank you very much. Now...I don't think I had this problem before. I think...when I set up a table, the "show grid lines" and "hide grid lines" is what worked....so one of the updates must have changed this. I love it that I can come here and ask a question. I'm not sure that I would have ever dug deep enough to find this solution....

You already have Wordpad on your computer, try that and see if it fills your needs.

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, Wordpad. You could then save the files as RTF (Rich Text Format) so that anyone with almost any word processor can open them without the need for Word. You can also save as .doc files with Wordpad.

Wordpad wont read MS Word.... openOffice has a portable version which you might search for. Sort of self-contained so you dont have a big install.

Mikie you seem to be partly right. I have Windows 7 and Office 2007 and Wordpad will open my .docx files. After your post I tried opening my older .doc files and you are correct they open as gibberish.

While I am alone in the wilderness I still feel more people should save in RTF format to get away from being tied to MS.

I have a neighbour looking for work and often he cannot submit a resume as requested in Word format as he has a Mac so he was coming here to submit. I created his resume in RTF and now his Mac Pages program accepts that and so do the companies where he has applied so far.

Gosh, thanks for the many answers.

I have Open Office downloaded already but have no idea, out of the seven program with it, which one to use. I assume it's
either OpenOffice.org or OpenOffice.base.

To send the finished newsletter to my readers, I do send it in a pdf file. I don't have problem with sending it. It's receiving and opening material for articles that come to me in Word that I can't open. I also can't open pdf files that come to me.

I have notepad not wordpad and all I get is gibberish.

Could someone help me with the OpenOffice program, please?

Nonnie, tell your contributors to use Wordpad :-)

As Owbist says it's under accessories and everyone with Windows has it. Even chief gurus at our computer club are going back to basics whenever possible.

For Those Doing a Printed Newsletter . . . . . . . . . . . .
I highlight text and copy it into a textblock in a Print Shop 'sign' (as opposed to a 'greeting card'). I use it every month for our printed newsletter and add imported graphics or those included with the program. I have Premier edition. But many of these types of programs do the same.
