Side mounted drawer glides - recommendations
Comments (0)My cabinet maker will be installing side mounted glides vs. bottom mounted. I know I am sacrificing some drawer width for height but that's the trade off I went with. I have heard/read a lot about Blum and it sounds like that is the brand of choice, but he said he was going to use either KV or Accuride. They will be self/soft closing and full extension. I want a smooth motion and don't want to be tugging hard to open the drawer or pushing hard to close. Any feedback/opinions/advice? Thank you!!...See MoreFound a local custom cabinet guy.... how do you judge?
Comments (20)Sorry for the delay Frameless cabs are European in origin which means they are metric ( US & England are the only Imperial holdouts left on the planet ). All your modern hardware ( hinges & slides )are designed in metric around the 32mm system. True frameless cabs are all in increments of 32mm, so a base cab would be 768mm ( 24 increments of 32mm ) This makes drawer and door sizes easy, as you could have a 6,6,6,6 or a 5,6,6,7 or an 8,8,8 or a 5 drawer ( 5 x32 ) & a 19 door ( 19 x 32 ). This is all very exact. The reveals on euro cabs are usually 3mm between doors and drawer fronts. When you place two cabs together, they need to have a shared 3mm reveal, so in actuality they only have 1.5mm each of a reveal. Where is this going? Veneer core plywood has never been nor will ever be flat or have uniform thickness (3/4" ply can go from 11/16 to 23/32 throughout the sheet ). So, you need these crazy exact reveals you dont have a square face frame to hide an out of square box so all your door and drawer front reveals dont line up. It can look horrible. Mdf and pb have a bad name but they are flat and consistent in thickness. They are the superior substrate anyone who tells you different ask to see a true frameless cab made from ply and check the reveals....See MoreLiberty Hardware slides vs. Blum tandem
Comments (3)Blum, Grass-for undermounts - maybe KV or accuride but both make better side mounts. IMO not the best place to save $$ I'd get side mount accurides first and you gain drawer height. As to soft close- I only have it on 4 drawers, wouldn't mind if it were only 1. . I disagree about hettich- put some down perssure on a drawer as you push it in, noticeable difference. I'd give up soft close before durability....See MoreSpacing 2 handles on wide drawers - need answers asap
Comments (11)My GC made the same comment, Jillius. However, since my pulls are 4" OC, they would look dinky in a 37" wide drawer. And unfortunately, the pulls we selected don't come in any wider widths. If I'd realized this sooner, I would have tried to find other pulls but I didn't so we're sticking with the ones we chose. They're lining up the two handles on my 33" wide drawers with the handle placement on the two 16 1/2" drawers above them. That's going to look nice. I just asked them whether one handle would be better. Their response was "You're right at the edge of one handle vs two. Two handles would look better here." I agree....See Morecat_mom
