Tell me about your Green Mountain Soapstone

I am considering Green Mountain Soapstone as their dealer has given me a much better price than their competitors. If you have Green Mountain Soapstone, can you tell me about the stone hardness, etc. Also, pictures would be very helpful.

No personal experience but "Rehab Addict" on DIY network used Green Mountain soapstone on episode that aired last night (at least I think that was the name of the company that was mentioned). It looked great! The host said she had used it before and was very pleased with it. She specializes in restoring old homes.

I have Green Mountain Original PA. Comparatively speaking, it's among the hardest of soapstones on the market, with little or no veining. That's also why it primarily reads black. Although it's not the case with all GM stone, mine also has small,caramel-colored flecks throughout and occasional, unusual multi-colored veining which look like either dried river beds or snake skins. No gaps, can't see seams, and very precise with their craft. tnhillbillytoo, thanks a bunch! stephct, I don't know where you are (hopefully CT) but they are based in NY. One day for the template, one day for the install. Fabulous! They are the fabricators and have many distributors where they can purchase the stones. Thrilled? Beyond thrilled...and still doing the yippee dance every time I walk in the kitchen:)

We did the prefabricated from M. Tex and it wasn't that bad. One of the easier parts of the DIY actually! We made templates instead of sending measurements. I would strongly recommend that. I makes you really have to think all the details through in a way that we wouldn't have if it had been just measuring. We got large sheets of card stock from an art supply store and taped them together. The card stock was stiff enough but could be rolled up to mail. The tricky part was the sink reveal and apron sink interaction. Oh, and the arc in for the banquette! We messed up by not having epoxy purchased from a supplier and had to get some stuff that wasn't as easy to work with. Just get that ahead of time. Otherwise the seams were pretty easy. Please tell me about your slate counters

I saw some lovely slate counters on an open-house visit I took over this past weekend. The kitchen wasn't brand new, the slate was a really lovely purple or maroon or something - well, it really was lovely even though purple counters sound frightful in concept. I don't know where teh slate counters were from but they did look like the local NEngland variety. had some dark greenish markings to them quite like the white stripes that soapstone has. It was really lovely. The kitchen was new but clearly not brand new - I think they said about 2 years old. The counters were in lovely shape - not stained at all as far as I could see. Very nice soft honed sort of finish as you can't polish it to a high sheen anyhow, I don't believe. Was in great great shape. on that note, I have slate counters in my bathroom, although not the New England variety - dark green with white streaks on them. I've had the bathroom in place and used for 3.5 years. I've had to seal this stone - sealed it a lot when we first got them but at this point in time I barely seal once a year. I wash my face at that sink and any water splashed on just beads up. No creams or lotions have stained the counter - and just yesterday I upturned a jar of moisturizing cream on the counter. It all wiped away without leaving a trace. I have no chips or nicks on my counter - knock on wood (watch this space for me to come back here in tears saying I've had some horrendous accident and scratched and nicked my counter). Good stuff, that slate.

I ended up using both the mineral oil and the milk paint wax. I also don’t oil/wax that much after the first weeks/months. The counter has darkened and stays darker now. I so,dimes oil to dress up bod,people who haven’t seen the kitchen yet. Most is needed around the sinks where it does seem to dry out and get lighter. I think both work and seem to be fine to use both (at separate times). Oil is a bit quicker but leaves more residue (maybe I should rub it out more) the wax takes a bit more effort to rub in but leaves a flatter sheen with a feel I like a bit more. But that difference could be that I used too much oil or don’t rub it out enough - with the wax takes more effort on but doesn’t seem to overdo.

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm really glad you can see why I appreciate my stone so much. When I first saw it at Garden State Soapstone (NJ) those amazing veins grabbed my heart at first glance. They still do now -- even years after the fact.

Christine, you are a hoot! I laughed out loud when I saw your post. Good luck on finding one of these slabs for yourself! :-)

We have Green Mountain Original PA on our island. I really like it and as far as hardness goes, nothing has damaged or chipped it yet. It was installed in December. We used the wax from Green Mountain Soapstone and have only used it twice, as recommended, and won't have to reapply for another year. I say go for it, it is a lovely soapstone !

slightly OT: muskokascp, you have a prep sink without a faucet?? How is it that you use the sink?

Marthavila, I was right with you on your lovely soapstone and the ''dry river bed'' and then you had to go and say ''snake skin''... I may never look at veins the same way lol.
