We have Verizon Fios, only had it a few months, but it seems pretty good.

I have earthlink dial up and it is slow slow slow. I tried a Verizon mifi but it was also pretty slow, although faster than dial up. And expensive for my needs/usage.

I have been cautioned against skybluecountry and similar ones, as well as Hughes because of difficulty with service and longterm contracts.

I wish cable was available here.

We have high speed cable thru our phone company( SRT) and it is good and when it does go out, the guys are fast fixing it. But our phone company is a big coop.

DSL speed depends on how far you are from the phone company hub and how many other users are between you and the origination.

In our case, DSL is about it. No cable here in the boonies. I might be able to get a wireless linkup from a local company, but we're in a canyon, so it might not work here.

What other options do you have available? That is far more important than what others have. And keep in mind if your phone line is the issue, and it sounds suspicious, any phone based option will have the same issues so your options then will probably be cable, cell or satellite. You may also have an issue with your modem. There's lots of things that can cause issues. Has this recently slowed down or been this way from the start? Does it vary or is it consistent? Have you tried connecting directly instead of wireless? It could be interference in your house/area interfering with the wireless connection.

Service varie widely so someone getting faster service even a block or two away won't apply to your situation, much less someone across the county, state or country. I know people who had much faster service on cable than DSL, and others it was vice versa.

FWIW I have Qwest DSL through USFamily.net. I just have the slower service and it's fine for me.

We have high speed from Comcast, our cable company. I've been very happy with it, but it is expensive.

I have AT&T DSL over phone line with filters for my house phones. I bought the intermmediate speed service (one step above the lowest apeed) at $30 per month plus tax. It has been ok; top speed is 11 MBS (11 megabits per second). Today, the speed and response is just fine. During the week, it slows down around 3 pm and doesn't pick up until after 7 pm.

Although ATT offers one more level up in speed, the one I have is the fastest I can get at my location. There is a little over 1 mile of phone line between my house and the local phone exchange. IT doesn't pay to buy a faster speed if they can not deliver.

Before I bought the service, I researched their site to find details. Although not perfect, their site was very helpful and did accurately tell me the fastest speed to expect. What they don't talk about is how much the speed will reduce during busy times, or how often.

The gateway (combination router and modem) they provided has proven relaible and stable. I've been using mine for 20 months without a glitch. We've had as many as 3 computers plus a printer connected at the same time. Most of the time, the speed hit is minimal. A slow down is only noticable if one of the computer is performeing a heavy download. My desktop is hard wired through a ethernet cable, one laptop and printer is wireless, and the third (a desktop) was wireless through a dongle plugged into an USB port.

The gateway is password and serial number protected against someone else connectiing to it. Without protection, an intruder can connect to the internet through your system for a free ride and slow things down. Also, just recently, ATT has annouced a cap on the amount of megabytes permitted per month. Exceed that limit, and there will be extra charges. At present, the limit is quite high and should not affect the average user. It affects those who are downloading large amount of movies and uploading the same.

Just Ameritech dial up, probably is ATT now. Bad when it rains. No DSL available, no cable and no satellite available out here either.

I had ATT, but let it lapse when I was paying like $40 a month just for Email. Now I've got Verizon Fios, very reliable, but no email. I know I could get email free thru Yahoo or Google, ,just haven't bothered. My old Email was all junk, the same old jokes and credit card scams, plus those Africans willing to share fortunes with me.

Comcast - High Speed. No problems.

I have DSL thru my telephone co and use AOL and sometimes Explorer to get around the web

I had U-Verse through AT&T back in the marital home, and then in the house I was house sitting. Now, I have NOTHING. AT&T was ssssooooooo slow getting anything to me, and then on Friday I found out, only dial up is available where I am.

But, since I am moving, I will give them another try. They are cheaper than cable here.

Just their customer service/tech support sucked for me since May 7.

we have Brighthouse Road Runner Turbo, close to 30 Mbps downloads & 2 Mbps uploads. we did have lightning at 40 Mbps downloads but for the cost we decided DH could live w/ turbo for classes. if you have anyone using the net for either viewing classes or uploading classwk you can not have less than 20 Mbps or you just can't do either. DH still gets a lag time on viewing at Turbo but 2-3 minutes is not too bad to wait... it isn't cheap, we bundle w/ digital cable w/ no special movie channels for $125 mo. Turbo is about the slowest I can stand anyways... we've looked at Uverse, they are not in this area yet and my sis has them in the Indy burbs w/ terrible reliability but they are cheaper. i would give them a try if they offered a trial period, otherwise we absolutely can not have our service not work for even a couple of hours. DH has classes to be logged into, tests are taken and submitted at specified times, homewk has upload deadlines etc... i'll pay more for what has never ever let us down in 10 yrs. ~ liz

We also have Brighthouse. Do you have your phone service through them, too? We do--cable (no movie channels), phone service with unlimited long distance and Road Runner. We pay $142. It started out $125 but slowly crept up. Don't know if it's tax or what. Guess I should call them, but the service is excellent, so I guess I shouldn't gripe.

Back when I had DSL I hated it got rid of it as soon as I could get Verizon Fios, I was one of the original test houses for Fios and absolutely loved it. When we moved here it was not available so I am now with Comcast cable on the high speed tier, very reliable and very fast.
I would not ever go with DSL again if anything else was an option.
If you do stay with a DSL service tell them to come out and put on the whole house filter for you at the box it is much better than using the individual phone line filters and it is free they just never mention it unless you tell them you want it. If any phone lines are bad between you and the nearest CO you will continue to have problems and doubtful they will fix it.

Hi Patti! yes the crazy-busy season is starting to wind down...ahhh LOL! we do not have phone w/ brighthouse, we just use cell phones and i have a program to send faxes via computer for when i need a landline. our's started out @ $107 and slowly crept up... ~ liz

We have Charter Cable. It's just like people describe Comcast Cable.. fast, reliable, and expensive. Since I do computer based work at home, it's imperative that I do have something fast and reliable.
