I'm not sure I understand. But the obvious seems to be 5.5" divided by 4 with a calculator. Wasn't the 8" HST cut into fourths, 2"?

Sorry,this is clear as mud huh?? let me try again.

The original squares are 8.5, when the diagonal is sewn and cut it becomes an 8 in. square. The eight inch square is then cut into 2 inch stip segments.(four strips)But I want to START with a 6 inch square,,,so my strips would be cut from a 5.5 inch square.Hope this makes sense.

Caroline, I believe you would divide by 4. So 5-1/2" squares would be cut in 1 1/4" strips. This is a little over so make the seams really scant, closer to 1/8". I have a chart in a book that provides dimensions for various sizes of this type of block, but it starts at 7".

I made a quilt like this....need to put borders on it yet. If I'm understanding you correctly, you would divide the 5.5" HST by 4. I get 1.375.

Here's the one I'm working on. I'm not happy with the top of it, so I think I'll have it go under the pillows. I plan to put a narrow border on it, then put a row of mountains around 3 sides of it. I think I'll make more mountains to go over the pillows, too. I think I called this one Spice Mountains because my DD chose various colors of spices.
