DS is finally moving to Iowa

When I moved from the SF Bay Area to Iowa 3 1/2 years ago, DS said he would follow in the Spring. Silly me, I thought he meant the Spring of '06. Tomorrow is his last day of work and he has a rental truck reserved for Friday. He is excited, I am excited also. It will be nice to have him nearby. He has plans for things he wants to do to fix up around my house. He loves my dog Jake. He gets to attend two family reunions here this summer.

Because the trip home was delayed, it makes it all the nicer. Enjoy the time with your son.

Flooding in Iowa - is Doug/Iowa_Jade OK?

I had been thinking about Doug & wife, too, had been to their place to pick up my Mills Magic and got a tour when his lovely tree peonies were blooming. So I know how high up on the hill they are. So I called him just a bit ago, he said they are fine, the creek has widened a bit but hasn't gotten as high as when they first moved there because the channel has deepened. The water is really flowing fast but hasn't risen to affect any of his plants, just a little water in the basement. It's really bad in parts here, and you've probably seen it on the national news about Cedar Rapids. Many other towns and areas along waterways in eastern Iowa are having serious problems including us. River is expected to crest at Lock and Dam 15 (crosses the river at Davenport and Rock Island at Arsenal Island) early Monday stretching through Tuesday at 21 feet. They are calling for people to fill sandbags, wish I could help, could fill one or two but not be able to lift them, would just be in the way. I live about 3 miles as the crow flies from Doug and am on high ground. On the perennials forum I posted some photos I took yesterday of a huge sinkhole in a street that caved in and high terraces collapsing onto the sidewalk and street 6 blocks from me, detours everywhere so didn't try to get near the flooded areas, except Duck Creek which had receded by the time I got there. I don't remember mudslides here in my lifetime. It's on a thread about how you do your watering, I got too chatty there so had better quit now.

Bev: Yes I'm daring - can't wait to see what I will do with them all ((hee-hee)). I'm thinking I'll treat some of them like zuchinni - leave on doorsteps and run.... I moved from Fort Dodge to Remsen nine years ago. Aurelia is about 40 miles from our farm - lovely little town - close to Alta which is the popcorn capital of the world (self-proclaimed largest popcorn ball in the world is sitting in one of their buildings on Main Street--whopee).

What a waste! But I guess he's gotta do it! I know when my kids moved from ND to Ia I think they only gave 30 days to get everything changed over? I could be wrong, but that had to be vehicle and drivers licenses!

Looks amazing!! Beautiful granite. You will never regret going with hardwood floors (I'm assuming you had tile before?) We put in hardwood too and I love walking on it barefoot. Is that a skinny dishwasher to the right of the sink?

My oldest DD and her first husband lived in Ames for a couple years. DD worked at the hospital just down the street from where they lived. DGS Hunter was born there. I really enjoyed visiting the 3 times I was there! It was a big town for us small town people! LOL

I lived in Davenport, Iowa for 6 yrs and was in the Engineering Training program at Rock Islane Arsenal. I liked the towns along the Mississippi River. The interior of the state is fine if you are engaged in farm activity, but I prefer the larger towns, the ones with some variation in the landscape.

I do hope that you son will enjoy his new location. He's going to see more winter than California. A lot of early US history happened along the Misssissippi - Black Hawk War, fur trading, steam boating, and development of navigation and flood control dams.

I'll bet you're excited! Has Ty got a job lined up, yet? Make sure the camera is handy when the fireflies start next month! I remember his first when we were at Sandy and Dean's a few years ago. He was fascinated by them! Some place I still have the picture I took of him with his first one.

Tami I didn't know you had a firefly picture. I am fascinated by them and I still love the lightening and thunder. Ty will start job hunting after he gets here.
