kitchen cabinets with a 10 ft ceiling
Comments (7)I think this is really a preference and design thing. Also budget. Stacked cabinets are so lovely and provide for a great deal of storage if you have a handy ladder nearby. I personally love the look of high ceilings and cupboards that are relatively low (but easy to reach). It looks more old - fashioned and I've come to love the clean look. It's also much more affordable than stacked cabinets. The box soffit option is chosen by many builders, but we specifically requested no box soffits for the entire home. I have friends who prefer soffits to an area that needs to be dusted though. I may have opted for stacked cabinets if I didn't have a handy dandy walk in pantry nearby planned for extra storage. Houzz has some great kitchens of all types. Comments (26)I love the look of your kitchen, babs, I think the open space above is a great look. Unless you have money to burn AND a too-large kitchen, I vote for 8 to 8.5 ft of cabinets with cove lighting above. What does cove lighting do? It gives soft indirect light which is always more flattering than high wattage central bulbs. Plus for smaller kitchens it highlights the openness of your ceilings and turns dark, murky shadows above the cabinets into a pleasant accent feature. I love all your stacked/stacked look pics above, guys, especially with the backlit top row. But worth the extra money over cove lighting? Probably not unless you have an unlimited budget or you've REALLY REALLY gotta have it. Then you probably should get it. :) Davif...See More10 ft ceilings in the kitchen
Comments (23)Everybody ha a different opinion on this My KD insists that the best look (and this guy is from a super high end kitchen firm---talking $500K and up kitchens--believe it or not)---is to have space above the cabinet and ceiling--and then to light that space with indirect lighting--low voltage or even fluorescent (it supposedly looks good up there depending on wall paint color) His opinion is that it give the room an amazingly bigger feel--more volume than one would imagine Therefore---I'm blowing out a ceiling--raising a header---to achieve a 9'9" ceiling !! and going with 42" wall cabs--thus a total cab height of about 8'---thus an air space above to ceiling of 1'8" Has anyone else had this open air above cab advice?...See MoreNeed pictures of 10ft ceilings with 42 inch kitchen cabinets
Comments (45)First, I think the 42/18 cabinet proportion works. But in general, I try to not take cabinets to a 10' ceiling. I did it in the photo I posted because they were spec houses and the builder wanted two different looks. I prefer the option where the cabinets do not go to the ceiling. I do not think the other option is as successful in regards to proportion (it feels top heavy). This is another example of where I took the cabinets to a 10' ceiling: I think this one is more successful because it's larger, has a mix of closed cabinets and open shelving and is balanced by a very large window. I think good scale and proportion can be overlooked in design in favor of the notion that cabinets HAVE to go to the ceiling. I would look at your plans and elevations with a critical eye to make sure you are choosing the best option for your space....See Moremelanie1422
