Toyota question?

I went shopping for cars for my daughter today, and we had mixed feelings. She has a Toyota now, and I have a Buick Rendezvous. Now, she is interested in a Corolla, to replace the one she has. I may be interested in a Rav4. But the dealer said (he always does), that he can't come down in price much, because there isn't much mark up on Toyota vehciles. But their vehicle prices don't seem any lower than similar vehicles of other companies (GM for example), so why do other companies have "dicker room" and Toyota doesn't?

This isn't about whether it's smart to get a new car and about "depreciation" of new vehicles and all that stuff. A new car every now and then is my indulgence. I'm just wondering if what Toyota says is true, or if people think they just say that because it works for them. Because in the news it always says that Toyota plant workers make so much less money, so I'm missing something? Any feedback is appreciated.
