Census Bureau request? Anyone get one?

Got a notice in the mail addresses to Resident of----
and have to the survey on line. (to save paper). They claim you HAVE to fill it out or else???? But this is different that the one people come to your door etc ( I think), and it states in a brief letter it is to collect information for the needs of the communities across the United States.
Then goes on to say enclosed brochure answers question, but no brochure-just information where to go on line, with a toll free number to answer questions.
Started to do it, but first thing, wanted my name, address phone number so they could contact me, if necessary. I may call a legal authority to find out what is going on.
Any one else get this notice. Looks official--but you know how that is.

US Census? That't not going to happen for another 5 or 6 years is it? The US census you must fill out.

sounds like a phishing attempt to me I would not give any information. I would definitely find out what it is and if it is legit before doing anything.

I've always found it a fun thing to position myself near a mockingbird going full tilt and try to rapidly name as many of the calls as I can. Kind of like that game Outburst I guess. Lisa1310, it just occurred to me that I could try to whistle the first few bars of "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow and see what happens. Of course, the results might be something similar to that Looney Tunes cartoon where the construction worker digs up the box containing the incredible singing frog, makes a big production out of it and when the curtain falls and the frog drops to the stage in coat and tails and tophat, singing the Michigan Rag, then instantly quits as the curtain opens and the audience boos the guy offstage. Only takes a bit of imagination to envision a mocker doing that act...

I think I get it and how it will look will depend on what type of cabinetry you are using. If you are using face frame cabinetry and full overlay or frameless it could look odd depending on your sensibility if your using a standard five sided cabinet without a door. My Mom used a frameless stock product and you can see the middle cabinet which will be open looks a bit odd in picture #1 because you see the cabinet box and it is inset 3\4 of an inch from the cabs on either side because it has no door (with frameless you would also see where the shelves meet the box and the pins that support the shelves). Less of an issue with face frame but I still think the indent where there is no door may not look that great. Not many choices with this particular cabinetry line so we ordered a standard cab with a glass door and had the door and hinges taken off, the glass removed and then had it re-installed using 'L' brackets so it frames the cab. We added some glass shelves and it looks pretty good. With a more versatile product you can emphasize the open cabs by using a different door style (same finish) on them, something with an arch or something like that. If you go through the finished kitchen blogs you may find better examples. All of the ones I saved are of inset cabs where it is a non issue (doors are flush with the frames anyway) but those were the ones that had the flush finished look we wanted to replicate as best we could. Mamadadapaige's was another kitchen I booked marked (again inset)when we were trying to figure out what to do because her open cab has some nice simple detailing at the top and the glass shelves. alot of people collecting unemployment will not get off just to get $11 per hr. i think if $11 is all you can find then take it but for most that is certainly not what they need to make it. i have never collected unemployment and don't even know anyone who ever has either. i have never gone a day since i was 13 w/o a job (since 18 w/o full-time work) but there are alot of people who are not like that and who are just willing to collect what they consider their dues and not take a job beneath their normal pay. i have definitely read on this very forum people say they are going to collect their till it runs out, not trying to find a job...of course that's a big reason sooo many are collecting right now plus no one prepared ahead w/ their 12 months of expenses in cash on hand. $11 pr hr is also not much for metro areas. during 2006-2007 when i did high end residential landscape design, foreman made atleast $18 per hr and laborers $15. of course we could never find non-mexicans willing to do that backbreaking work for only $15 per hr LOL. even in the nursery group i work for only mexicans are willing to work outside and we pay well, w/ benefits and OT. so yeah i'd say maybe working the census is not exactly a job most want, especially in southside chicago, gary IN, south miami...detroit... i think the work, aside from having a bad territory would be interesting but i have a well paying job i earned tht is secure, so i would not take $11 per hr. i support myself & DH while he works on an honors masters in engineeering, plus 2 big old dogs & a cat. i could not pay the house, food, cable/internet, cell phones, utilities, tuition/books, insurances, on and on w/ $440 a week. we saved cash up for yrs to afford to continue our lifestyle as it is while DH doesn't work and i make no appologies for being overly financially prepared for the worst case senarios... ~ liz

OT but I have another horrible example of similar federal government waste. Apparently some mail was taken from my mailbox a few years back. One day a big envelope of old mail suddenly appeared in my box with no explanation. I called the post office and they said they'd recovered some stolen mail. So I guess they think you're a potential victim of identity theft if mail was stolen. So I got some mail on that - okay. Then I guess they started working on convicting the guy who did it and I started getting "victim updates". Both DH and I receive the same victim updates by mail - so we get two of the exact same mailing every time - sometimes updates every week. I think we have received probably 50 pieces of useless mail - a mailing every time something happens with the judicial process related to prosecuting the perp. I finally found an option to opt out of the updates - and we are still getting them. It is an absolutely ridiculous waste of money. And I won't even get started on the outrageous waste I see in my work - where the federal government is one of our customers. It is insane.

The Census does a complete survey once every 10 years, but they do a lot of smaller surveys in between.

Our Canadian census used to be required, with threats of drastic measures, if one reneged, including an old lady having been taken to court recently for having refused, but recently has become in actuality more of a survey ... so many of the statisticians say that the results will be much less certain/trustworthy.

That doesn't sound legitimate to me. 'Have' to fill it out online? There are still households without computers, homeowners who would find that task difficult . Nobody can insist you are proficient in computer skills, any authentic government office would give you a choice is my first thought. I wouldn't fill it out online or otherwise if it didn't include a phone number I could check for more information.

There's no reason to be suspicious, those involved in nefarious activities rarely use snail mail. Does the return address suggest it's going to the Census Bureau? It's true that they do data spot checks in off-cycle years, I've gotten them before.

Call the toll free number to check, I'm sure that will put your mind at ease. If it's not a government agency, you can simply ignore it, all the while keeping your blood pressure at a normal level.

I did call our Attorney General in ND and got a referral number of the district office in Denver and called them. Yes it is legitimate, and they said I could fill out what information I wanted to. It is doing this every month in smaller surveys instead of once every 10 years to everyone but this is different that the one where you give out more detail information. Both people were very information and very nice. They thanked me for calling and checking it out. They even had my address on file for sending to this address.

First I got a letter from the Census Bureau saying I would be getting a Community Survey, then the survey arrived.

Bear in mind that Census information cannot be released until 72 years after the data is collected. The 1940 Census is the most recent to have been released, and it was released on April 2, 2012.
