Design question: asymmetrical fabric pattern

On to the next project!

I have been collecting fabric to go with this great print of old Americana tavern signs and plan to start on it over the long 4th of July weekend. It will be a man's sofa-sized nap quilt - lots of leaves and manly-man prints in manly-man colors, with a soft flannel leaf-print backing.

But I'm struggling a little with how to use a large print like the tavern signs. I'm thinking of a medallion type center with one of the best signs at the heart, then a wide-ish outer border in the print so you can see most of the signs. Some are 3"x4" and some up to 5"x7". Maybe an Around the World pattern around the medallion.

OR.... I could cut out the variously sized signs, then bring them all up to the same block size with coordinating dusty blue fabric and use them in alternating blocks in the quilt with a variety of pieced stars for the alternate block pattern.

Have you used a large, irregular print in a quilt? How did you do it? Any suggestions for this sign print?

Thanks! Kate
