Learning about stuff

I learn a whole lot here about different customs and foods in different countries or areas of our country. Is it as interesting to you as it is to me?

There are a lot of things I'd like to know, but some of them I'm afraid would become political--for instance, do other countries have something comparable to Social Security? And questions about the educational systems in different parts of our country and foreign countries.

I just wanted to thank everyone who posts. You are a living, breathing encyclopedia. The best lesson I've learned is there's more than one way to look at different things (and that butter tarts are a "have to have" during the holidays). :-) You guys are the greatest friends!!

Good for you Pat! Looks like you did it and did a super job:) I'm trying to learn that also, at least how to label my photos, I think I can do it now. I've been too busy with other stuff. I think I'm through for awhile outside. I got the last 3 roses planted that I'd ordered and came the other day. I'm done except for a few pots I want to plant. My goal was to be done by the time the heat hit. I almost made it:) Now, I just have to get all my roses healthy again from pests and I can stop and smell them....ha ha. My 3 clematis never did grow that I planted in pots. Next time I'm going to put them directly in the ground. So now I'm going to just watch what I've got planted grow and enjoy:) I really need to see these roses mature and see how much room they're going to take up first before planting anything very large in with them. But, knowing me still haunt Lowes and see what else I might like.... It's still going to be really hot again today so I'm going to hide out, the sprinklers watered for me today. Maybe read a book or finish my fairy sign that still half done. Leslie

June 6th is a little early for those blooms. They generally start blooming in July. If we have a very hot spring and no cold snaps, there may be some early blooms... I would imagine that C'ville has a great farmer's market - you could check there. Another great way to save $$ on flowers is to check with area high schools and see if they have a horticulture program. Many do, and the students need real-world work experience. The program in our county stays very busy with weddings. They do a tremendous job! The program can't charge for labor -just for the cost of the flowers and vases. School will still be in on June 6th, so you may luck out!

Yep you're hooked! Next you'll be making sauerkraut like the rest of us. I have to tell you the marmalade is the best. I've had it on toast every morning. I've got to make some before I run out. RR makes it look so easy. This sounds stupid but I have to find some time to cook. I haven't even had time to cook a 30 minute meal. Thanks, sdello. I was wondering whether it meant "multi-channel madness," "man crush Monday," or "met customer man." (see here.) I'm sort of conflicted about this room. It's too busy for my taste, but darn it, it DOES have character. Something to consider: There's an argument that homes are living places that change with the times. And yet... every time I hear about someone who wants to rip out a feature of his or her 1950s or 1960s or 1970s or whatever house, to make it look like every other house built within the last 10 years, I think about what old house fans go through. After previous owners in previous decades spent tens of thousands of dollars "updating" their 1920s and earlier homes, these current owners now are spending tens of thousands MORE restoring the distinctive features that those previous owners casually gutted and trashed, sawed off, painted over, and/or drywalled over.

Another easy way to find stuff out is just to google the question. You can write a question right into the search window..google is amazing that way. I learn so much from just doing that to all kinds of questions from the trivial to the sublime!

When I traveled abroad I was surprised to find out I enjoyed the culture exchange as much as I did the location and the wild life.

I hear you Patti....the stuff you learn from other people may not be 'factual', but the experiences that we share with them are real learning experiences. My DD became friends with a Japanese-Korean student last year while living in a 'boarding house' and it is surprising(?) how our university systems sort of take advantage of those $$$$ our foreign guests pay out to attend our schools. I assumed (THAT word) that we took their money and treated them better than we do. The student is a sweetheart, and has really paid her way without the kind if "exchange" student support like meeting American families and seeing the real environment outside of the university. She graduates next month and goes back to Japan and I hope that her total experience will have been memorable. DD has made a dear friend...I hope forever friend.
