A true 'grazing' story

This is part of an essay I wrote ten years ago that I titled "People Watching." It is true.

At Krogers I was deciding between the many varieties of grapes. I wanted the sweet seedless ones, but the signs were confusing. I chose what I thought, or hoped, were the right ones. In the next bin were some others that were large and luscious looking. I wondered if they might be the sweet, seedless ones. Many years ago I read an article about people who sampled as they shopped. Grapes, cherries, strawberries, were specific targets because they are small, not like taking a whole apple or banana. The article pointed out that this was shop lifting, just as much as if it were a large item, and that this pilfering added up to quite a loss over time to the stores. I decided then that I would never do that again. My primary reason was to teach my children that it was wrong.

This day, as I debated about the grapes, still wondering what they would taste like, and if they were seedless, a young lady stopped and asked me if I knew if they were seedless. I could almost read her mind. I believe she was thinking that if I had not been there, she would have sampled one. She took a step away, and as the Devil got hold of me, I decided we had a right to know! I picked off one grape, showed it to her, smiled, took a bite, held it out as she looked and we both laughed and said, :"No, they are not!" I told her I did that just for her, because we are here to help each other. The wages of sin were sweet, even if seedy.

As I went on to pick out my potatoes and cabbage, I turned back to my cart, just in time to see a my-age lady at the grapes. She was having a feast.

Please, Lord. forgive her. And me.
