What is he graduating to become? Going on to an advanced degree? Job hunting? Job? How about helping to set him up in his own place in the new town? or work wardrobe?

It's traditional--at least around here--to give something needed for his next step in life. Something he'll need for his career. My parents gave me a top of the line sewing machine when I graduated from high school--heading to college to become a home economist. We gave DD her tools when she graduated from college as an optician. That sort of thing. Something he'll need, but which might be tough for him to be able to afford at this stage. You didn't say what his plans are, so it's hard to be too specific, of course.

He going to college for filming. I bought him a good movie camera Christmas before last.

Stuff for his apt/dorm? Have you asked him what he would like? He may just want the money for his trip.

I think the two gifts you already planned are sufficient. I give #100 when relatives graduate high school or college or for wedding gifts. Wish I had more to give, but a cash gift is always appreciated.

The beach towel sounds fun -- but he won't be packing anything that bulky, will he? The cash for the trip will be appreciated, I'm sure!

BTW, has he been accepted at NU? Another excellent choice for film sutdies in Chicago is Columbia College (much less expensive).

Is he paying for the cruise? Even if he is, your gift sounds very generous to me. Congratulations to all of you. Sending kids off to college is a big deal.

Your gift sounds generous to me, too. If you want to do more, does he have a good film editing program? I know nothing about these, but I have friends with kids who are film students, and I hear them talking.....

If Lance will be moving away from the area to go to school, a GPS could possibly be a good gift for him especially if he'll be going to unfamiliar territory.

My dtr double majored in anthropology and film, graduated in 2008. The school will provide all the cameras and editing equipment he needs. Don't spend money on things he won't be able to use. The gorgeous camera we gave her to take never got used - it was all school equipment, and not even until her second year. By then, her camera was outdated!

Back when my DS graduated from high school, he used his moneys for a few days in Panama City, FL.

My DD went on a cruise when she graduated too. Had a great time.

I'd stick with the cruise theme.. if you want to give him more how about some sort of tote to pack in his luggage for souvenirs? Or sandals? Sunglasses (I think I recall him wearing glasses in his grad photo).. prescription sunglasses are nice, quite expensive though. They do make nice clip-on sunglasses if he doesn't already have some. If his camera isn't waterproof, how about a waterproof disposable one for any water-related excursions? Maybe add other items he could use on the cruise... shaving kit? Travel sized soaps, etc?
