For those of you who know what looks good: take a look at our kitchen.

Behind the camera is the "breakfast room" holding a table with forest green chairs, a huge floor to ceiling window within a bay window thing, and chair rail molding.

Kitchen has grayish tile floors which will remain.

If you can see, above that doorway is a pale blue color - we had the kitchen painted in "Swimming" by Benjamin Moore, a pale robin's egg blue.

Originally I had the brown/blue idea going on, but our wood has a reddish orange undertone so that combo doesn't look so good.

So, what do you think about this: paint all cabinets white, paint all windows and molding and chair rails white, put in white bead board as the back splash, and get new laminate counters. Also, remove decorative wood trim above sink, and add pendant lighting.

Do you have other ideas? What color laminate? I'm thinking something to imitate marble, something whitish?

You're going to have an awful lot of white. It will certainly look clean and highlight your lovely blue. Have you considered some of the beautiful laminates that have blue flecks in it? Give you a little break in your white?

Just curious. You going to keep your florescent ceiling light or do something coordinating with your pendants?

Hmmmm pendants with some cute, blue shade w/ chrome accents or something?

If you're painting, I am here to tell you you really should look at the Cabinet Coat. BM recommended an oil based primer for wood, & that. On the melamine I'm painting, STIX bonding primer. A little anding and that oil-based primer is like silk. The Cabinet Coat is going on like a dream and is drying as hard as advertized. It kind of flows into the grain and is beautiful.

Just another thought. I'm so happy with my paint! [LOL]

Thanks for your helpful thoughts, Christine. The kitchen faces east with many trees in the yard so it's only sunny in early morning, so maybe lots of white would be okay? Another thought I had is this: someday, I'll change the blue color to a bright yellow, since I love yellow and white.

We are keeping the fluorescent light. Thanks for your advice for the pendants - blue and silver sound good.

I'm grateful for your paint advice for the cabinets - that's just what I needed to hear.

I think what you really need to think about is keeping temps in the GH even as possible. You don't want cold pockets or hot pockets either. I am in the south, so my heater amounts to a little electric heater from WallyWorld. I'm trying to keep the GH at no lower that 63-65 at night. I have an osolating fan mounted high in the GH that runs 24/7 year round. I have 3 smaller fans mounted at all levels (top of top shelf, top of bottom bench, and floor) that I run during the day when it's hot, and at all times when I run the heat. I have two remote thermometers that tell me the temp in the GH from inside my house. With the fans running on low my temps are even from the north wall to the south wall or maybe only a degree difference. The fans are a must to get this effect. In a GH I believe most of the heat is lost by way of the roof. Just throwing a couple of sheets of plastic sheeting over and securing it to the roof will help with heat loss on those really cold nights. I haven't had to do that YET, but I am prepared. Studying your pictures, Mary Lu, I don't think you would have enough space to use the rods in the link. Given your beautiful moldings they would give an updated look and still be very formal but the rods are 10" wide at minimum, which would mean 20" of coverage per window (Plus an additional 8" per rod to accommodate the finials). It doesn't look, to me, like there would be enough spacing between each window. You may, however, be able to find a rod with a smaller finial that would fit the space better. I just looked at the one on the same page as the link. If you went to this type rod, why wouldn't you be able to change out the window treatments seasonally? I think the rods you have are fine. I have known women who have used a rod similar to what you are using and they have glued on a faux finial to the bracket or the end of the rod to change the look a bit. Whatever you glue on there could be painted if need be to acheive the look you want. I've seen glass cabinet knobs, wooden balls, finials that are preformed for woodworking projects etc. I'll bet GE II silicone would hold a finial type thing on there. That's some great glue LOL! The paint color in your LR sounds delicious! and looks very nice with the upholstery in your furniture. In my living room I used Benjamin Moore 'Standish White'. It is a pale yellow which looks really lite and sunny with light pouring in through my 102" south facing window. But then on over cast days or at night when the lamps/lights are on it has just enough beige in it to make the room feel warm. It's really a pleasant color. Finding paint colors is hard because the same color will look different in every house depending on the lighting. LOL, I hope I'm not making this harder for you! MeMo

Thanks again, Jane. Yes, my supplies must be ordered on-line and I need to allow at least one week to receive them, just in case. The director at the A&C Center doesn't seem to understand that I require that one week lead time to offer any really neat classes. sigh. It's just as well... I've had "no shows" at classes in the past, as well as individuals who claimed they weren't aware of a 'materials fee'. Karen, thanks for your input. I'm certain that a fully woven star basket is just too difficult as a beginner's weaving class. People who have signed up for my classes have varied from being general crafters to being scissors-challenged, and I need to allow time for the latter type to complete the project during class time. I try to find weaving projects that give everyone a sense of accomplishment. My favorite students are the ones who are astonished that they're able to make something so pretty and functional! In a muffin basket class I offered, one woman kept saying her husband would never BELIEVE that she made it. lol! Jeanne, if you were near me you wouldn't need to sign up. We could meet up any time you wanted to weave! :) But your comment about a long class is telling... a typical beginner basket takes at least 4 hours to weave. I pre-prep the materials and assist as much as possible to cram a weaving class/project into a 3 hour class, yet it seems too long for some people. I'm still debating on offering the bells as a class. I realize that it's not a 'wow' object, but the technique I came up with is an excellent way for a beginner to start weaving and learn shaping technique. Thank you all very much for your input!

OK I tried a variety of borders and I like them all!! LOL!! Really the blue was nice and cooled down the quilt so that was nice. The small pink boarder with the dark green outer also toned it down while tying things together. The recipients sister stopped by and said her sister would love the pink as a wide border since you can really see the orange leaves in the pink when its cut wider. I sewed it together last night and it looks great. I'll have to take a photo in the sun as the colors are looking brighter online than their deep jewel tones IRL. I also forgot to take a pic after I finished the border since it was so late. I"ll pin baste it today after work and be sure to take another pic so hopefully the true colors can come across, the pink with the orange leaf work batik is really beautiful. P.S. I'M SO OVER TIRED IT WASN'T UNTIL THE 15TH TIME I WROTE THE WORD BORDER THAT I REALIZED I WAS TYPING IT WITH AN "A" IN THE WORD!! :rolling eyes: Sorry for the typos but thank you again for all the help!!!

Just painted my cabinets off white, same color on trim for windows and doors, but have carrara counters and cararra and tan/beige mosaic marble tiles for back splash. You will have a lot of white going on there and may need some contrast.

I don't know how well yellow walls will read with the gray floor. You may want to consider a deeper warmer color to offset the coolness of the white and gray and to accent the shape of your cabinets. I would also suggest painting the crown molding on the walls without cabinets the same color as the ceiling instead of the cabinets. But then again if you're painting the cabinets white, that won't be an issue.
Have you considered black counter tops?
