...what brand of scented oils do you like best?

I've been using Courtney's brand, but bought some La Tee Da oils which I really love. They are so strongly scented I can mix them 50/50 with 91% isopropyl alcohol and still get my whole house smelling great! I'm burning Squeaky Clean - Crisp Cotton now, but I really like High Tea - Sugar Crumbles too.

I got one of the high dollar fancy ones(Lampe Berger ???) as a gift. The scented oil smells good in the bottle, but when I burn it, it suspends a chemical odor that is awful...
I light it according to the instructions, but we just can't stand the strange odor...smells like an oil spill in the house!

Jaybird, try a different scent ... maybe a food scent? I've got a couple scents that I can hardly stand ...one is a floral and the other was supposed to be a Tropical Escape ... I had to escape the house when I burned that one! lol

I really like all the baking/coffee/vanilla type scents, but I know not everyone does.

I've tried making my own oil with alcohol and the essential oils, but never could get the scent just right and they seemed to clog up my wicks.. so I stick with mixing the La Tee Da oils with the 91% alcohol. Mustangs - do you have a favorite floral scent in the La Dee Da oils that isn't too flowery? I might want to try something different next time I order.

Another vote for Lampe Berger!!! They are amazing at removing, not covering odors. My favorite fall scent is Amber Powder. Cant describe it, you just have to smell it. I also like Jouney to Bahia and Fig but there are lots of other scents, and a neutral without scent to cleanse the air. The oil can get costly if you're like me and have 3 lampes, but well worth it. 10 or 15 minutes and the house is fresh again. IMHO nothing works this well. When i cant get any oil to burn, i like Circle E candles in Ambrosia (very popular where i live) and Silver Bells for Christmas (cranberry-orange scent). You may want to look into either of those options online. ON A SIDE NOTE, the lampes come in such pretty designs that you can find something to match your decor and it isnt obvious what it is. Also, the knockoff oils are just okay, but are no comparison to the original.

To parker25mv Thank you very much for your response. On climbing guinea flower (Hibbertia scandens) I found this - which has rather put me off! "The yellow flowers have been reported as having an unpleasant odor variously described as similar to mothballs or animal urine or sweet but with "a pronounced faecel element". That might not cause allergies - but it might be an aesthetic consideration with all the neighbors! On Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) the scent can apparently be quite intense. And since that is the primary concern - I'm reluctant to try that. I am investigating climbing roses. Though my assumption is that roses need a fair amount of pruning and maintenance. I don't know how intense the scent of climbing roses is. I have some follow-up questions about Creeping fig. I had read about the vigor of the plant. There are lots of warnings about that! It has quite the reputation! I wonder whether the topography of where the vine would go might provide me some protection from the worst excesses of Creeping Fig. 1) The fence it would be growing against is in isolation. No walls nearby. Over 50 feet from the nearest structure or wall. I assume that - above the surface - it cannot leap over 50 feet to find another surface to climb. So does that afford me some protection from its negative aspects? 2) Once it has climbed and filled the vertical space of the fence - what does it do? Does it just start creeping horizontally until it runs out of fresh surface (which would be just fence) to cover? What does it do when if there's no more uncovered surface? Does it just get thicker on the available surface? 3) I know that the roots can spread. Is there a limit to how far they can grow? And is there a pattern to which direction the roots would go? eg Are they more likely to head downhill or uphill? Are the roots at their most invasive strength closest to where they were planted? Or do the roots at the furthest distance have strength? 4) I ask because about 30 feet uphill of where I would be planting - across a road and deep down in the ground - there is a septic tank. I would never plant a ficus tree near such a tank. But should I be concerned that the roots of a few creeping fig plants could traverse that sort of distance and do damage to a deep-set tank?

I will qualify my suggestions with the warning that I have never gardened in zone 10, so do your own research on the plants I suggest. Any of these that I have grown has been in a pot, not in the ground, so I don't know how large they get or if their growth is likely to get away from you. I do have allergies and dislike most scented plants, though a few don't bother me, so I can understand the problem. I have grown Mandevilla in a pot for several years since it doesn't survive our winters. I notice no scent to the flowers (either indoors or outside) which are trumpet-shaped and showy. It is a twining vine, so need something to twist around such as wires; it won't stick to a board fence on its own. It should be hardy in your zone, 10b. There are a bunch of Bougainvillea species and selections you could check out which should be evergreen in your area. What look like flower petals are colorful bracts, but there are tiny flowers that have no scent. I honestly am not sure how they climb. Thunbergia alata is another flowering vine that is evergreen in your zone. I've grown this and it's also totally unscented. Twining vine. Creeping fig is a self-clinger, so doesn't need wires but will fasten right onto the fence itself. I would ask around at nurseries to see how much of a problem it might be in your area as far as unwanted spreading. I am also not sure how attractive it is since I've seen both nice and homely photos.

We have a Lampe Berger one too and I love it. I have used Honeysuckle and Rose so far. I need to get some more oil for it. I've used it all up. I really like mine. When we first got it as a gift we had never heard of them before....DH didn't read the instructions and just let it burn....we thought it was so odd to have such a huge flame! LOL....his sister told us to put the flame out and then it omit the fragrance into the air! From then on I have really enjoyed it...such a great smell that lasts for so long.

The only one I've ever burned was La Tee Da....

I'm out of oil...and need more...

My daughter bought a "La Tee Da" burner for me for either my birthday or Mother's day a year or two ago. And a few bottles of the oil.

A couple of weeks ago I found another burner at the Goodwill for 2.99.

So now I really need to find where they sell the oil.

My daughter at the time she bought it owned half ownership of a flower/gift shop. In a town about an hour from here. But they are high dollar.

I've heard that Halmark did carry La Tee Da...I think I'll start there.

Any suggestions on a floral scent that is good?

I haven't tried but one floral scent (not La Dee Da) and didn't like it ... but if you look at the link I posted it describes each scent and some of the florals do sound like they'd smell very good.

Try ebay for oils...we don't have a store around here that sells the ones I need. It was cheaper on ebay for me than through the websites.

I buy my lampe oil from Makes Scents. I'm completely addicted to her Blueberry Cobbler & Buttercream.

She offers 4 oz. sizes which are great for sampling different fragrances, and she also offers 3 different strength blends.

Lydia, I didn't know they could be mixed with alcohol. La te da has a dilute but the odor is still to strong for me. I would like to burn mine more often but the smell can chase me out of the house too. I'm going to try the alcohol!

Make sure you use the 91%. It is all very flammable too, so be careful. I haven't had any problems at all with the mix though and have been doing it for about a year now. It burns very clean and seems to help keep the stones in working order.

You could probably use essential oils too....they won't harm you or your pets, come in all sorts of smells and can help with a variety of ailments. Be careful about anything you buy at dollar stores. Many many things they sell are sub-grade and harmful.
