Fabric is not 100% cotton as stated!!!!!!!!!

I bought some fabric from Joann's they said it was 100% cotton !

This fabric is not 100& cotton it is a cotton /poly MIX and I am NOT HAPPY! This has been WORST FABRIC TO CUT!I have never had cotton fabric pucker when I have cut or tear the fabric as this did...........

That blocks is perfect with your halloween blocks..
I just cut a piece of fabric resently and it did the same thing yours is doing not sure where it came from but it was the pits.. Looked fine when I finished. Don't shop JoAnn's much as it is 50 miles away. grace

The only way to know if something is not 100 % cotton is to burn a small piece,and look at the resulting ash...if it IS ash, it's cotton - if there is a small, hard ball, it's man-made. To me, the picture looks as if it's puckering because, at each of those places, a thread isn't being cut at the same time as the others, for some reason, and it's being pulled, drawing it from the fabric and making that pulled in place. I've had this happen occasionally, and on 100 % cotton....don't really know why it happens, but I don't think it has anything to do with it being a poly blend. After all, if it were, all the fabric would be a blend of the cotton and poly, not just a thread here and there. I wonder if it could be your rotary cutter...a little place on it that doesn't cut as well as it should,making the blade just tweak a thread every once in a while?

Something else to consider other than just the sheets are the different types of mattresses and mattress pads you cover your mattress with, as well as the weave and fiber content of any blankets you top your sheets with. They have as great a cause and effect on sleeping comfort as do the sheets. We have a memory foam mattress and it holds your body heat really well, which is nice in the winter along with flannel sheets (we don't heat our bedroom) but that warming has the opposite effect in the summer. In the spring we add a mattress pad and sheets from coolingmattress.com and the wicking technology helps keep you cool. When you sweat (and the average person loses about 10% of their water in the form of sweat while sleeping - and people who sweat profusely, even more), the material in the sheets wick the moisture which will make you feel cooler. We use a comforter from the same company in the fall/winter because it helps regulate the temperature - you get neither too cold nor too warm. We like it a lot more than the down-filled comforter we used before getting the comforter from this company. A bit extreme, but we also have "Summer Survival Mats" we can use. They are gel-filled mats that act as a buffer between your body and the mattress to absorb your body heat. Great for that time of the year before you turn the air conditioner on, for camping, or a way to cool down fast without air conditioning. I have no idea what kind of cotton Bob is working with but I grew up with 100% cotton velveteen in the living room...in those days there was no family room and my mother would wipe it with a whipped up suds of a laundry soap and then wipe with a damp terry towel and it would look like new. I have a 100% cotton sateen fabric on my livingroom sofa...it's 25 years old and now very worn...but I kept it scotch guarded and spot cleaned whan necessary....and it lasted a long time. Granted not the family room, but I have 7 grand kids and there have been kids, dogs, coffee, wine and who knows what. It's all about the weave...cotton is very durable if it's not a satin weave and quality dyed. But I would make a rule, no eating on it by people younger than 20!!! If it's a good buy...go for it! If you get 6 or 7 years out of it....they will all be close to 20 and you can get it recovered in a cream colored linen....which would be my dream sofa! Linda C

Sin, repurpose it...cut, hem and add another rod and there you have an adorable shower curtain valance. LOL. Well dang Sin, but glad you posted this as my next trip to Target I needed to pick up a new shower curtain. Wont do that now. I have a cream one now that's mostly cotton with some poly, I can't remember the poly/cotton% but I wash it in hot, its never shrunk. I've noticed shower curtains are not easy to find they either have fish on them or some kind of print that I just don't like. Go shopping Sin. Lol

Stopped into a Marshall's on my way to the library today. I hadn't even know it was there. Went through EVERYTHING because I didn't want to miss something. My conclusions: everything commonly available in cotton is either white or blue. Wait! There's a third color! White with blue stripes. I don't normally wear either color. This has been true in every store I've visited, not just Marshall's. I did end up buying a white linen shirt with embroidery at the neckline. It was only $10 on clearance (slightly damaged, but I can fix it easily) . I will wear it a few times and see if I can stand to wear a color that will be filthy by the end of the first day. I can always tea dye it. Probably will. Marshalls had, it seemed, almost everything on clearance. Must be between seasons. But henceforth I will think of that store as the Home of Rayon. I'm sure I would not have noticed that before, if I hadn't been ferreting inside every shirt for the fiber content tag. Wait Wait! I did buy some all-cotton shorty pajamas. They are blue and white. Striped. But I don't have to choose jewelry to match them, and I won't worry about them making my skin look green while I am sleeping. Then I stopped off at a Talbots (which I also didn't know was there) and bought the shirt Lucy mentioned above. The cut is very flattering, with a yoke front and back. The nicest cut of anything I've found so far. Tassel-Tie Chambray Popover Shirt Which is blue. With white embroidery. I asked them to help me find anything else in a sleeveless natural fiber. I was the only one in there, so the 2 staff ladies quite got into the challenge. I tried on the 4 other items, 3 of which were blue, white, or blue and white. The remaining shirt was white with orange embroidery. Sigh. I didn't buy anything else. So far I have not bought anything in any other color. But the Nordstrom order arrives tomorrow.

I have a problem lately with Joann's, wouldn't put anything pass them. On top of that is anybody ever friendly at your Joann's? Not here they act as though I'm bothering them if I ask a question.
We have been getting a lot of flawed fabric there too.

I agree with what Sandra said about the burn test, but I also always know when I iron fabric if there is any poly in it by the way it smells. That is probably because of the heat of the iron burning the poly in it.

I can't believe that Joann's or any place (even Walmart) can sell fabric that says 100% cotton when there are man made fibers in it since there are people out there that could be highly allegic to certain chemicals. I also realize that some people get a reaction from sizing, but all fabrics that come from a factory have sizing in it so there is no guess work there.

Well I did the burn test this morning and it did turn to ash..... So I just think the fabric is flaw......I used 2 different rotary cutters both with new blades and it still did the same thing....I have cut over 500 4" squares from different fabric not from Joann's this last past week no problem I never buy fabric at Joann's but I bought this orange never again...................

Red, Sorry for your frustration over the fabric. But your pumpkin is so cute and all your colors are wonderful together. You really don't sleep do you? Or have you figured out a way to dream about it and it gets done? I keep hoping for that LOL

Was that their solid broadcloth? I recently bought some in Navy Blue to add to a dust ruffle for my DMIL and I never suspected it was not 100% cotton -- but it was THE WORST FABRIC EVER.

It was such a magnet for lint that it was UNBELIEVABLE. I can't even explain. And the wrinkles seemed to create themselves while it laid there. Also -- there was NO REAL SELVAGE -- I basically cut my yardage down the middle long ways, sewing the cut edges to the part to tuck under the mattress, figuring the selvage edge that hangs at the floor would not need hemming 'cause it would not unravel. At some point I noticed it was raveling...

Anyhow -- the LINT was the WORST. I tried using a sticky roller on it and finally gave up, sewed it together and washed it again and STILL Had to use a lint remover.

It will serve its purpose "ok" but I will NEVER buy that fabric from JoAnns again for ANYTHING. (I'd thought it would make a good quilt back. NOT.)

No Laura I think it was suppose to be classic cotton Joanns broadcloth is a mix! Like they say live and learn LOL!

Red, I recently bought some fabric that was supposed to be 100% cotton too. Got it at Walmart though so I shouldn't expect quality. I prewashed & when I was pressing seams without steam & on dry fabric, it puckered. Was just barely on the cotton setting too.
