So happy!!!!! Egg/fertilization report

I got a call from my doctor this morning. Originally, based on how things were looking Monday when they gave me my trigger shot, they anticipated only about 8-10 of my eggs being mature enough to fertilize. When they got 19 eggs yesterday, they were happy but still didnt anticipate anywhere near the 19 to be mature.

Well, my doctor was so surprised and happy that all 19 of my eggs were fully mature!!! This is so good, and 16 of them fertilized!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy. I was anticipating about half of this. They wont all make it for the next 3-5 days in the lab (I'll probably lose about 50%) but even ending up with 8 embryos is awesome!! This allows me to do this fresh cycle and have 6 left to freeze!

I wasn't doing very good yesterday. I was feeling the effects of ovarian hyperstimulation (basically overstimulated ovaries, too high of hormone) and was feeling alot of pain and nausea, but today I'm much better. But hearing this news makes it all worth while!!!

If you are looking for a specific breed, look at feathersite.com, under each breeds he lists breed clubs and breeders, they would most likely be a good source. You can also try eggbid.com, they sell adult birds, started birds, chicks, fertile eggs and equipment in an auction-type setting, much like ebay. You can also ask at the local feed store or ask to put up a notice if they have a bulletin board. 4H clubs, ag colleges, etc. There are also people around that will share hatching eggs, I offer some from my flock if you don't mind the 'box of chocolates' approach--all my birds run together so you never now what you are going to get! *L* I've got pics of my flock on my site if you are interested, just click on my 'My Page' link. Thanks velvet sparrow! I did already look at your site before posting my questions. So those are the questions I was looking for more detail/clarification on. Also looking in general for anyone's personal experiences with this and any good tips. Still really curious how the feed works so that only the chicks are getting the starter feed and Mom is getting her regular feed. And if you say to separate them from the flock for 2 weeks to a month (mine can be in the same coop so they can see one another, yet divided by chicken wire so they can't get to one another) do you just one day let them out to join the flock and that's that? ...or do you still do the meet and greets to practice some without the divider? And during the early stages should I let Mom outside in the runs for periods of time or should she stay with the chicks 24/7?

The word is "Hugelkultur". That's what my mom used to practice, on a small scale. When preparing a vegetable bed, she would strip the area of all the top vegetation - weeds, ferns, shrubs, saplings. She then strips the layer of top soil and put this aside. Next she would dig a trench in the ground - orientated north-south lengthwise. How deep this trench is depends on how difficult the soil is to work on. In this trench, she would throw in all the woody twigs, small trunks, and rotten debris. Next, she would cover this with the weeds/ferns/saplings that she collected from clearing the area. She compacts this down with a "hoe". She uses the top soil she had previously set aside to complete the final layer. The final result is a long mound on which she would grow her spring onions, pak choi, chilli, etc. The mound usually ends up about 20 feet long, about 3-4 feet wide, and approximately 2 feet high. It often ends up not looking all that pretty - it would be crooked, and the height and width would vary. But, boy didn't it produce good crops!! (She would grow sun/heat loving crops n the west side of the mound, and the less sun tolerant types on the east side.). She uses fern leaves to mulch the soil. A heavy tropical down pour would easily wash away the top layer of good soil if left unmulched. I did not know, until recently, that this technique of vegetable growing that my mom used to practise more than 40 years ago actually has a more fancy name "Hugelkultur", done on a much larger scale. Now-a-days, in addition to maintaining a compose bin, I collect the larger chunks of organic waste by setting them aside in a pile through the growing season. In the winter, I trench the beds, throw in all the organic materials, together with any kitchen wastes that may be sitting around, and build up my "Hugelkultur" bed - albeit on a small scale.

Bluebird Eggs haven't hatched 21 days since eggs were found

Very odd things happening with my houses this year. I had bluebirds in one house that laid 5 eggs. For the most part I try to stay away so they don't get spooked. In this case the next time I checked there was one fledgling that I saw but he didn't seem ready to fly away yet. But when I checked 2 days later there were no babies or eggs. The nest was empty. This box was protected with the mesh on the opening. I'm hoping time just flew by and the brood hatched and fledged in my absence! Will the parents start a new brood in the same nest or should I clean the box out for them to start over? I had another box that had activity, 5 eggs layed and a week later no eggs or babies. I fear they were killed since it was an old house from last year and it did not have the protective metal mesh at the opening. I have a nest nearby with the mesh protection. I kept checking and there was no activity or eggs. Then suddenly there was one egg!! I assumed the mom would lay more. I checked for 2 days, still only one egg. The third day the egg hatched with a tiny bald with a little fuzz baby bird. I kept watching from a distance and I did not see the male or female going into the house. I skipped looking inside the box today. I wanted to stay totally away. Tomorrow I will check again. I hope the little guy is okay.... Is it unusual for a female to lay only one egg? I'm thinking that perhaps the pair that were in the other box moved to this box when a predator got their other eggs..... Thus only one last egg to lay??? The box with the one egg is about 20 feet from the empty box. Perhaps this is part of that brood? Can the mom or dad move an egg or did she just lay it in a different box?? I have another box about 100 feet from that one protected with the mesh that some sparrows have taken over. They have built a nest and hang out in front of it on the mesh opening and on top of it but no eggs for well over a month. Perhaps they are the culprits that got the 5 bluebird eggs. Very strange that they built a nest and aren't using it. I know they will build several, one as a decoy or to give the female a choice, but I don't see that they've done that unless they are planning to take over the bluebird box. I will be keeping a watch on that....

Awww, Steph, congratulations. My best friend's daughter went thru this last year so I know how emotional this is. Bless your sweet heart. BTW-she now has triplets who will be a year old next month!

Oh, woweee! That's terrific news, Steph.

So tell me ... at what point can we all uncross our toes/fingers/arms/ears/eyes and breathe a sigh of relief and you can start decorating another nursery? I can't remember all the steps/phases to this process, just know that there's a bunch of them.

stoneybaloney, the embryos will grow in the lab for 3 days (until Saturday), at which time they'll analyze them and see how they're doing. If they're doing good, they'll keep them in the lab for 2 more days and transfer 2 into my uterus on Monday. If they're not looking good enough to continue growing in the lab, they'll do the transfer on Saturday.

Either way, I'll have a pregnancy test on Wednesday, Feb. 21

If it's positive, I'll go back 2 days later for another to make sure my hormone level is rising properly. If it's not, I'll keep going back every 2 days until they can make some sense of it. If it's looking good after the 2nd test, I'll go back 2 weeks later, around the first week of June for an ultrasound to see how things are going.

If my test is negative, I'll just get a period like normal, wait one full cycle and do a frozen transfer (if I have embryos to freeze). If I don't have any to freeze, I'll start all over with a fresh cycle again, which would be the same process I've just been going through. Let's hope I dont have to do that, it's physically (and mentally) draining, and not exactly cheap. :-)

trinity, we don't know what day the transfer will be. They wont check my embryos until Saturday. If they're good enough quality, they'll let them continue to grow in the lab for 2 more days to take them to a blastocyst stage, which is the farthest stage before they hatch out of their outer lining and implant into a uterus. This is the best you can get in a lab created embryo.

So if they look good and decide to let them go the extra 2 days, it will be Monday. But I wont know until Saturday.

It's pretty likely that it will be Monday.
