Too cold to do much planting here too, but my son's asparagus bed is booming along, and his garlic is impressive. My DH and I grew every kind of vegetable we could for many years. The big garden lay fallow for a long time, and I was so happy when my son and daughter-in-law resurrected it a couple of years ago.

Then last year we had an excavator fill in my in-ground pool, and my son started a squash/cucumber/pumpkin garden where the pool used to be. This year I notice he's fencing in another area beyond the shed. He definitely inherited the gardening gene!

As for me, I do better with a limited number of vegetables these days. I grow sugar snap peas and bush beans in big containers, and herbs too. I have an 8' tall, 5' wide arch on which I grow Kentucky Wonder pole beans.

I miss growing lots of varieties of heirloom tomatoes and various lettuces. I can't eat the tomatoes anymore, so that would take some of the fun out if it. I still have flowers, though I'm reluctantly downsizing those beds.

I have two and they are all planted to the brim. We had better not have frost.

I have lots of beans and tomato plants, but have to grow them in huge pots. Slugs are huge here in Florida and it doesn't take them long to destroy a plant!

I hope to get mine started within the week. My garlic is huge and doing super well. I plan to plant potatoes, pumpkin, tomatoes, kale, spinach, peas, beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and other greens.

We planted tomatoes, peppers and herbs several weeks ago. They were doing quite well until last Friday when we had a thunderstorm with lots of large hail early in the morning, and another one in the evening. Pretty much everything got shredded, not just the veggie plants. Hopefully, they will all recover.

Got mine in a couple weeks ago. I planted tomatoes, peppers, peas, okra, cucumbers and 3 kinds of squash. I had already planted onions, spinach, 3 kinds of lettuce and 3 different radishes. We are already eating the onions and radishes. Lettuce will be ready in a few days.

Spinach is ready, tomatoes (15) beans, peas, onions, carrots, pole beans ,arugula, squash and eggplant are growing.

We will again have a big garden, but it has been too wet to get it tilled and tonight we may have a frost. Plan to start it soon though.

Here's mine. I have one row of Endive, one row of Spinach, two rows of Buttercrunch lettuce, two rows of Red Sails lettuce, two rows of French Mesculin, some red onions, and peas up against the old bean trellis.

And guess what? As I was walking back to the house after snapping these photos a few minutes ago, I saw these little white bits flying around. I thought they were lilac blossoms. Wrong - it was snow! Tiny ice pellets. Both cats came in the house asap.

I've got tomatoes, pole beans, sweet and hot peppers, carrots,beets,potatoes and lettuce growing. Also a few flowers, daisies,hostas, and my favorite flowers, Bleeding Hearts.

Petra, hail can be so devastating, can't it? Your plants will recover much easier from hail damage than freeze damage.

Lily, 15 tomatoes is a lot! Do you can or freeze? My mother used to make the best tomato juice!

we have eaten all my lettuce. garlic looks great. tomatoes are about 2feet tall and they are loaded with blooms. I haven't planted cucumbers yet. that is all I will plant.

My lettuce is beautiful and my onions are beautiful and my cabbage is probably trying to think of something to size it in your mind now but probably more than a quart...I should have already planted out my tomatoes but the weather has been horrible...plenty warm but horrible storms..huge hail storms and two more due this week. I am having health issues this year so I am going to tone down the garden...plant tomatoes and call it quits...

I have tomatoes and peppers planted along with pole beans, sunflowers and Swiss chard.....also planted basil and fennel.
Lots of volunteers coming up.....tomatoes, a strawberry plant probably from the birds....there is a field half a mile away.
I have cosmos coming up from last year along with sweet alyssum and California poppies. The poppies are going to seed now.
I tossed in all the seeds from a Japanese pumpkin during the winter (aka kabocha) and it is thriving.
I plan on planting some beets and some lettuce soon.
I had sugar snap peas and kale and bok choi during the winter. Our growing season is all year around.
I have nastursiums and marigolds coming up, too and a wheel barrow with old compost and am having fun seeing what sprouts.

I love gardening, I call it my valium. So far we have planted 15 tomatoes, string beans, Italian flat beans, wax beans, both red and white cabbage, cukes, Brussels sprouts and chard. Two big pots of lettuce are on the patio. Rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, oregano, dill, chives, and lavender are also in pots near the kitchen door on the patio for easy use.

We have a frost advisory tonight but I hope I am safe.

All these gardens sound really lovely, and there's nothing like home-grown vegetables - so tasty. I'm a gardening grouch, I don't like to garden at all. I love to bake and cook everything from scratch, but I consider gardening a chore. My mother and other family members love gardening, so I must have missed getting the right genes!

We plant mostly in raised beds but so far we've basically only planted in one...second crop of beans and some late tomatoes will be in the other one. Beds are 4'x16' (I think) and in one we have beans, about a dozen or so tomatoes, and sweet and hot peppers. Gotta have the tomatoes and peppers for Annie's Salsa! Garlic is probably about finished for the season, it's huge! In a separate bed, not raised, we have 2 kinds of potatoes and okra. Also have some carrots for the first time in many years. Decided not to plant cucumbers this year but several volunteers have come up in the compost bin.

I live for that first 'mater sandwich!

I've got 9 raised beds, this year I am scaling back big time. I've got my mom living with us now and she requires much more of my time so rather than be disappointed in my production I am limiting myself to 22 heirloom tomatoes, a variety of beans and cucumbers and broccoli. I've got six tomatoes in with walls of water to protect them, good thing because we had a hard frost last night. All the broccoli is in and between today and tomorrow I'll finsh getting the rest of the beds and pots ready for the remaining tomatoes. We have 3 cattle panels attached to one another in an arch that I use for beans and cukes. I actually use large rubbermaid tubs for those, I mix in some vining flowers and that looks very pretty. I told my neighbors new wife she can have two beds if she'd like to put some stuff out.
I'll be planting lots of flowers in the remaining beds and in pots on the deck around the pool. That will be enough for me this year. Oh and we have strawberries on the deck as well as lots of herbs, got to have herbs.

Everyone's big gardens sound so wonderful...Here is what I have... pretty pitiful in comparison..but it's all I can do this year, I am the one that had a hysterectomy, bladder and bowel lift 7 weeks ago....anyway. I have a big flower bed in one corner of our back yard that had a huge Bridal Wreath Spirea, that my husband hated except when it was blooming, he thought it was ugly the rest of the time. So before my surgery I cut it back to the ground and put Round Up on it. I intend to dig out the root system next year and make this bed match the opposite bed in the back yard with a tree type Crepe Myrtle and Yopon Hollies...So in the mean time I bought 5-5 gallon Lowe's buckets and had my 11 year old granddaughter help me plant tomatoes in them. I did manage to get some help hauling home the big bags of Miracle Grow Potting soil to fill them with. I do not have much "manly" help at this house with things like that.... anyway.. the granddaughter did a bang up job of planting the tomatoes and had a lot of fun doing it, got her bare feet muddy etc and loved it. I even had her use the cordless drill for the drain holes. I left them on my deck for about a month then had my son come over and set them in that flower bed that's just sitting there empty now... I had him line the buckets up against the privacy fence and it doesn't look to awful bad either, the buckets are a bright blue so they are pretty. Those tomatoes must love it, they are growing like crazy, blooming and I even have nickel size tomatoes on them! The granddaughter is beyond excited about this and can't wait for some fried green tomatoes she said (I love this kid)...
Now I am worried, I got to reading on the internet and some people say that tomatoes planted in containers produce great and other say theirs didn't produce at all. So I was wondering if anyone here has great or bad luck with container tomatoes?... and I am worried that I won't have enough to satisfy my summer long love of tomatoes and freshly made salsa, since I read the smaller bush type which is what I bought since they are recommended for containers, that they do not produce as much fruit. I think I planted 2 of the bush tomatoes, one Celebrity and 2 heck can't remember what they are....seriously I can't.... so now I am thinking about getting 2 regular plants that get bigger and stick them in the ground in between 3 of the buckets. Since that is a pretty big bed I got 2 cucumbers and planted them in between 2 of the buckets so they will have room to spread out. The reason I did not plant all of them in the ground in that bed is it needed too much work, moving mulch, killing out grass etc... just stuff I could not do this summer..
so, how do your container tomatoes do?....

Success in container gardening depends entirely on the human element and the products we choose. Finding or building a very porous, fast draining medium is essential. Some people do fine with Miracle Gro....others, not so much. It can be a challenge to balance the watering. But lots of people get it right.

Celebrity is a great tomato. I hope you have a cage ready because they can bear lots of pretty good sized fruit.

Rhizo...We have the 15 tomatoes of different varieties so when one isn't producing the others will be. I don't freeze or can them but eat them at every meal and give some to my kids.

I DO have three plants in giant containers and they do as well as the ones in the ground. We also have a Topsy turvy with grape tomatoes hanging on our carriage house where it gets full sun.

So I see there is hope...thanks!... I have some "contraptions" made to tie them up to the fence instead of cages. Plus this will help keep the buckets from tipping over incase of storms. I am off now to buy a couple to stick in the ground In between the buckets. I have a very green thumb when it comes to growing flowers and tomatoes in the ground, hopefully I can master container tomatoes!..

I see lots of tomatoes in your future.

We have 8 large raised beds (6 are 3' x 12', and two are 2' x 12') and two small raised beds that are about 2' x 8' on either side of the greenhouse. They aren't completely planted yet. Right now we have potatoes,4 types of squash (an experiment in planting early), green beans, wax beans, carrots (3 types) beets (3 types), mint, tarragon, dill, chives, parsley (both flat and curly), cilantro, peas, lettuce (3 types) chard, onions, garlic, scallions, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussel sprouts. Waiting in the greenhouse: Tomatoes (about 20 total - a mix of roma, cherry, and slicing), peppers, with lots and lots of basil (I'm putting in about 20 plants of 3 varieties this year), rosemary, and more squash. Cukes will go in along the greenhouse soon, I think that is all we are putting in this year, although I forget sometimes what is in the works. We fertilize once a week or so with fish emulsion, and add compost or manure tea. The plants are "companion planted" to help repel pests. Onion and garlic repel a lot of pests, so they are scattered around the garden. Potatoes repel bean beetles, so those two are planted together. There are marigolds and nasturtium (we do eat them, but they are mostly to draw aphids off of other plants). We use pepper & garlic spray to repel other pests, and floating row covers. We are thinking of adding two more of the 3 x 12 beds because we just don't have enough room to grow everything we want. (The house in the background is our neighbor')s.

Wow, I'm really impressed with all of this. Lots of raised beds. Such a nice variety of plants, too.

Frost did a number on our community garden , but things in the yard survived due to my diligence. Lowest freeze in decades.

I accused landlord of ploughing a larger area, he said not ... but it's a bit wider ... and some in the middle that was grass and weeds last year ... is ploughed, this year.

So it looks as though the 3/4 mile or so of row last year ... is going to be more like a mile, this year.

Find I'm getting tired. Then go sit down for a while ... or go in for a coffee, etc.: lots of time.

I have a small suburban lot, but I cram things in wherever I can. I've got some herbs- parsley, chives, rosemary; fruit- 1 cherry tree and 2 apple trees plus 4 blueberry bushes; onions, peppers, tomatoes, carrots and beets. I usually plant broccoli and cauliflower too, but I'm lazy this year. Oh, I've also picked lots of asparagus. Then I have flowers- various perennials and annuals. I dig up my dahlias in the fall to replant. I planted a lot of stuff out over a week ago, covered it for the last two nights and I think we're fine now. The tomatoes and the peppers I started in the g/h.
