New To Pools - need finish help

I'm about to get my first pool. It's going to be made of Gunite and my pool person is showing me several options for finishes. I'm in Long Island so I'm told not to use tile below the water line because of cracking from freezing.

I'm trying to get a dark blue water look both during the day and with lights. But most of the pools I've seen look either light blue or green.

I'm being shown Pebble Tec, Pebble Sheen and Beadcrete. The additional prices are running from $14,000-$28,000.

There must be a way to get that Caribbean deep blue without spending that much extra. Also, the Pebble Tec felt uncomfortable and I've read about people who don't like stepping on it.

Can anyone please let me know what my other options are? I've looked online and there are so many choices. Also, I don't know how accurate the colors are with online pictures.

I am having the same issue. I am going with pyramid cement blue granite-polished finish in the cumberland color

Tina - I am not a pool finish expert, but have talked to several PBs recently about this topic. The impression I got from most is that Pebble Tec, River Rok, Wetedge etc. are all pretty much the same in terms of product quality and longevity. Obviously bigger rocks (Pebble Tec) have a more rough surface and smaller Pebble Sheen and Fina are smoother. Some PBs have a deal with Pebble Tec to only use them, but we found that Pebble Tec was overpriced. We went with River Rok. I agree, the Beadcrete looks great, but very expensive. Also remember to read the fine print on the warranty. Most PBs told us that yes, they have a 10 year warranty, but will likely find a way to get out of it (daily pool chemistry readings required, etc). However, most did say that the aggregate finishes have lasted a long time. I read on here somewhere that the blue color in some of the plasters of aggregate finishes fades over time, but have not confirmed that. Hope that helps a little. DocZ

Trailrunner, I live in Pewaukee, WI which is about 20 miles west of Milwaukee. This past winter was very long but I think I can safely say spring has sprung. I swim laps like crazy all summer. I thought I was doing good with 50 or 60 round trips but now you make me feel like a slug with your 80. We only use a pool service to open and close the pool. I do maintenance throughout the summer. We replaced the old sand filter with a cartridge system 2 years ago and the pool stays cleaner than ever. No more back washing and way less vacuuming. People are always surprised when I tell them how little work it is to keep the pool up. I would love to have pavers or stained, stamped concrete around the pool but can't justify the expense either. Found a photo of the damage that a September hailstorm did to the liner. We were actually lucky because we were planning on replacing the liner the next spring and this way our homeowners insurance covered the cost. So here is what it looked like. This photo ( with my son acting a little bit goofy) shows that the previous liner was a bit lighter than the current one. Our pool gets full sun until late in the day. Maybe I should have picked an even darker liner. I didn't think they would make the water that much warmer. Oh well, I hope this liner is good for the next ten years.

Given what sounds to be a formal setting and not wanting the "pond look" on cloudy days I thing a 100% white quartz finish would be ideal. The surface would be white and could be polished providing the smoothest finish. Polishing done correctly with a water driven polish unit, not sanding pads hooked to a weed wacker. The polish part alone should take 5-6 hours. Just my opinion though.

This door will be removed. BBQ area will be under here. Not sure if you can tell from the pictures but the concrete is pretty rough. Our PB suggested poring new concrete to bring it to the new level of the door and with the pool and stamping it all to look cohesive. Problem with that is it costs 14k and we would like to put that money into other things.Anyone have any suggestions as to how we can make it blend in and look nice with the new stamped concrete?

You can try Diamond Brite from SGM. They make a Midnight Blue that is probably what you are looking for and it is alot smoother that Pebble Tec. Should be far less expensive as well. Good luck with the new pool.

Renovxpt, Which color is your favorite on the BlueRidgeGranite? I like that Cumberland color a lot but have not seen it in person other than the catalog. Which pools did you build on that catalog? I live in Raleigh, we are using Blue Haven and are very happy with them. thanks, Clark

Clark, I really don't have a favorite other than shades of gray because they are stable and yield nice shades of blue with water. If you want the mirror image effect darker is better. We did #4 and 12 in the blue ridge, 4,9,18,19 in fresco, and #1 in mauigem. Several of these have Tennesee Crab Orchard.

I don't know anything about the Raliegh market so can't make reccomendations. Good communication with your builder will result in a better project. You seem to be making good choices so far on material selection. Keep it up and you will have a very nice pool!

Wow those are some nice pools! I was thinking about the chimney Rock like the one you did but on cumberland #5 and #6 which is a grey that gives of a turquoise blue. Hopefully it will go well with the flagstone. I spoke to the guy from pyramid cement about this product and I am really excited. The samples have a lot of maricite and granite flecks that really make it sparkle.
