inground vinyl pool overflowing...

Hey gang!

We have an IG vinyl pool that is at a standstill at the moment; no equipment due to fresh decking but full of H2O. The challenge we are now having is the huge amount of rain we are receiving this weekend. The pool H2O is flowing out of the pool, off the deck and into the yard. Is there a problem w/ so much H2O? Should we go out and rent a sump pump to get rid of the excess H2O? My PB's cell goes straight to VM so he is unavailable for help. What is your opinion????

You must not have an overflow. If you have one, open it! It is not good for a vinyl pool to be that full because water gets behind the liner and leads to problems. Find a way to get water out...why no equipment? You can siphon, or pump it out, but don't let it stay that full.

Go ahead and buy yourself a little floor sucker pump with a garden hose attachment, you will have many more uses for it and they are under $100.00.

Water above the liner is bad, you could end up with water behind liner resulting in erosion & bubbles.

I build/repair inround vinyl liner pools, I would highly recommend not lowering the level of your water with wood walls. Actually lets find some info out first. How old is the pool? What did they use when building the pool to support the walls? wood or steel bracing? Is there a footing? The reason I ask this is I have been on pool renovations on wood wall pools that are 20-30 years old. Once we lowered the water level down the walls caved in. Due to the previous installer using wood bracing. What happens is the wood bracing dry rots/decomposes.Once that happens the walls are solely supported by the water itself. Once you drain the water down the exterior pressure MAY cause the walls to coapse inward. I do not mean to scare you however I would call the contractor and speak with him, there is that possibility that you may need more than just your liner replaced

Can a vinyl pool become a gunite pool?

I can imagine that converting to gunite will be just as pricey as a completely new gunite pool, minus the cost of excavation. But, anything is doable. I think that a most cost-effective method would be a new liner that's more appealing to you, new coping, and perhaps jets and skimmer fittings that blend in a little better. Fwiw, I have a gunite pool, and I have white jets...

Thanks for all the kind comments. To answer some of your questions... Run53-- that is an 8 foot market sytle umbrella. It is in a heavy iron type decorative base. I bought the base at a garden center type store and it is wonderful. I liked it so much I went and purchased another to hold the umbrella we use at our table on the patio. It is very stable and holds without problem. I'd say it probably weights about 25 pounds. geeebeck-- Our pool is 16x34 in size and goes from 3.5 to 8 feet in depth. The decking is 3 feet on one side, 4 feet on the other (by retaining wall) 5 feet at diving board and 14 feet at the stairs. We are located in south central Pennsylvania. I am happy now with the simple lines of the pool. I initially wanted a mountain lake free form design but we have a small yard. The smallest diving pool in a mountain lake was 18x36 and would not have fit. My kids definately wanted a pool with the diving board so we opted for this design. The retaining wall and step down from our patio make a nice transition and looks pretty good. bobyoe-- We are all very happy with the pool and the kids have been using it daily. We've been using the solar cover the past two weeks since the weather has cooled off a little and last night the pool was 86 degrees. We didn't get ours from the builder, I wanted a different cover so I purchased it separeatly along with the solar real. My neighbor has a pool and recommended the solar cover purchase to me.

Ditto on the submersible pump.. Get a long garden hose and get the water flow away from the pool. I have one for my in ground plaster pool to lower the water level when we have torrential rains in CA. Works great

Hi! Thanks for your replies; sorry to take so long to get back to you all. Ended up dumping a TON of water down below the skimmer line so I hope we're all set on that score. Did get a call at 8 am today from the PB; said it was never a problem and that his crew could have come out to do it for us. Oh, well... They did come out today, though, to re-winterize the pool. Long story short (ha ha for those of you who know the LONG winded version...!), the PB removed all of our equipment in order to pour our decking plus make the surface ready for the enclosure installation; this was done back in Oct if I remember correctly. Pool was winterized and temporary pool cover was put in place. Winter cover had to come off the day the deck was poured; Nov 3. We then we had to cure for a bit. During the wait, we had LOTS of rain but no way to release any water w/o a pump which we did not own. Soooooo, we finally gave in and pumped it out over the weekend. The enclosure installation began today (YAY!) and that crew got about 1/4 of the job finished; they worked from 7 am until 8 pm-it was pitch black here in CT by 5:30 so they set up floods! They'll be back tomorrow at 7 to finish the job! I wish the entire pool build could have gone as smoothly as what transpired today!! And, yes; one of these days I'll post the MANY pics from start to finish!
