Pool coping question in North Jersey

Pool guy is really pushing paver coping. I'm already over budget and may have to go with a poured concrete deck with the aluminum coping instead of a paver patio. Honestly, is the aluminum coping as bad as he is telling me? What is the life of an aluminum coping? Are the any problems I should know about to help with my decision? The paver coping is about $3500 for a 16x32 pool. Seems really expensive. I could probably save 5k by getting an aluminum coping and a poured concrete deck. Any comments??? I'm confused!

How about a cantilever coping with a stamped concrete deck? Much cheaper, looks great, can be tinted, and there's nothing additional needed when it comes time to install your safety cover, whereas precautions are needed if the cover bolts need to go into pavers.

I'll second jerseypool in so far as a canter levered edge. It really looks sharp.

Whether you stamp and dye it is immaterial.

Since you mentioned an aluminum coping, I assume you are looking at liner pool.

Paver coping on a liner pool comes loose. It is a inevitable as a concrete crack but costly to repair.

I was reading this thread and noticed someone posted about calling Caribbean Blue Pools and Spas without delay. I too was shopping for a pool, started to do some research, and came across their internet advertisement claiming they are the number 1 landscape architecture firm in New Jersey. What I can't understand though is when I started looking at Caribbean Blue Pool's and Spas landscaping pictures, I found that they were showing landscaping pictures done by scenic landscaping.If you go to the bottom of Caribbean Blue Pools and SpaÃ¯Â¿Â½s landscaping page which just so happens to be titled Scenic Landscaping Outdoor living:http://www.caribbeanpoolsspas.com/gallery.html and open up any of the landscaping pictures you will see they give credit to Scenic Landscaping. I don't understand why Caribbean Blue Pools and Spas who "does it all" include landscaping featuring a competitors portfolio on their web site? I also googled their so called staffed landscape architect (NJ Landscape Architect Marc Nissim RLA CLA NJS50096900) and found out he owns his own design firm www.hdglandscape.com/information.html. I've found there are several swimming pool companies in New Jersey who actually do it all. If you live in Central New Jersey including Mendham NJ You can try calling Ivy Construction, Inc./Ehrich & Ehrich Landscape Architects, Inc. in Cranbury, NJ or Beechwood Landscape Architecture and Construction, LLC in Southampton, NJ From Northern New Jersey there is B & B Pool and Spa in Chestnut Ridge, NY, Stephen J. Miller Enterprises in Mahwah New Jersey or Cipriano Custom Swimming Pools & Landscaping also in Mahwah NJ. I live in Mendham New Jersey and I know all of these swimming pool companies service my area.

Visited Pool town yesterday. They recommend an IBEX support system for pool vinyl pool installation. They have a special polymer coated one for use with salt pools. The fall season special puts me at ~$30K with salt water, increased pumps, lighting, resort steps, 3' architectural crete plus an additional poured area 8'x10', colored with overlay coping, Octal pool circulation sysem (8 returns, underwater circulation). Question, how strongly do you feel about the heater in NJ climate? IN other words do you find yourself using it often? I don't for see me and the Missy swimming on cooler days. The kids perhaps but they don't mind a cold pool. They will deduct $3k for the heater and $1200 to run gas which amounts to a lot of money. Not including the utility costs. Or, is it like buying a car without the AC? My 2 neighbors with heaters never use them. One is broke and the other is too cheap he says. Also, do you believe in the salt water system? Lastly, architecturally stamped concrete or take the credit and do paver stones. We just installed a 1,000 sq ft techo bloc patio with builtins, fire table, sitting walls and light piers. This would cost more to do around a pool and I don't mind the look of the color poured textured crete. My concern is the upkeep and risk to cracking. They say the IBEX system will minimize risk due to the anchor system under ground providing some additional stability at surface. Is that nonsense? Would you instead take the credit and up-spend on the paver. My concern is more about the risk of cracking in this climate and not the look. I don't need matchy looks.

Jenno, Thanks. We love living in the country where we have a little space (we sit on one acre), and don't have all of the wooden privacy fences between every home. And we love our neighbors. But I am looking forward to some more plantings to give us a little more privacy when we're in the pool. :0) Travis

poolguynj and other PB's thanks again for the quick follow ups and feedback on my questions and concerns. currently the PB still has his maintenance guy coming over daily to check the chemicals, brushing etc. and adding chemicals as needed. PB said that he would do that for about a month before turning it over completely to us for maintenance. natural one, thanks for your comments on the pool build. the PB was actually there for all of the stages and on site a quite often so we felt that he was on top of everything from beginning to end. as fari as the drains, personally it doesn't bother me and kinda like the contrast but that just me. what actually bothered me more was the color of the pool cleaner, it's white with a white hose and when i asked about it our PB said that to get the black one, it would be about 300 bucks more. uh, i decided the white one didn't look bad after all! also, we had a landscaper come out last week and give us a bid for some landscaping behind the pool. it was over 6800 for landscaping that i was not even going to be able to see since the back beam is raised.....i nearly swallowed my gum when he told us the price. so we are thinking now that we will reduce the size of the bed directly behind the pool, but add perhaps some windmill palms on each end to give it some character and instead, add some beds on each end of the pool so at least we can visually enjoy some of our expenses! the sun came out today so hopefully i can post some pictures this afternoon. Yes, it is a vinyl pool. I like the look of the cantilever coping. Can the cantilever coping be done after the liner is in? The installer is planning on laying the pavers, so he will be prepping the ground. I'd like for him to assume (because as of now we are) that we will do pavers in the spring. I don't want him to do a half ###'d job because he knows that concrete is going in instead. Then when it fails in 5 years he can say "I told you so" about the concrete failing. Thanks!

I apologize, I should have noted that we haven't even begun to dig yet. Permits should be in this week, and we will start soon after. I just want to know what my options are and what to expect the final number to end up being. Thanks again!

Aluminum coping is fine and lasts many many years. I would not hesitate to install it on my own swimming pool.

I am also in process of making cement pool coping, contractor cut the old cement about 10 inches from all along the edge of the pool and framed it to apply new cement coating, my question is do we need to use rebar to connect to the main deck or just pour cement as is? Picture attached, please give me your thoughts, thanks

I doubt that you can make coping. Depending on the material, it is pretty specialized. Is it possible? Sure but is it more likely to be brought in as a construction material and then installed? Absolutely.

Most coping is 12" wide.

The coping is attached to the bond beam of the pool, forming a single element. The deck is another, separate, element. Keeping them separate is the main idea so they can expand and contract at different rates. The rebar in the deck shall NOT be attached to the coping or bond beam of the shell.

Aluminum coping is designed for liner pools only, not gunite/shotcrete pools.
