Craig List...I don't really understand it

I have read on here that some former e-bay sellers have now gone to listing things on Craigslist. I recently sold a pile of books on EBAY, and went to pay my fees and it was over $52.00. Plus paypal fees. I just think that was high. Anyway, that is not what I was wanting to discuss, just thought I would throw that out.:) Do you necessarily have to deal with people in your area? Do you have to meet them or can you send money and set up accounts? Will someone explain all that? As a seller and buyer. I am terribly afraid of being scammed, are my feeling justified, and what do I need to avoid that? I am very interested in selling and buying on Craigslist, but how? Will someone that has had experience or knows of someone who has, help me by explaining your experience and knowledge?

It is very easy to sell on Craigslist and it is free to do so. You can put up to 4 pictures on your listing too, I don't get people trying to sell antiques and cars with no pictures. It's super easy to upload them right from your computer. Craigslist will have emails forwarded to you - so people won't have your email address unless you email them back. You do need to meet the buyers in person, items are not shipped, just like if you had placed an ad in the newspaper. Do not accept checks or any payment except for cash, have a friend or your DH there when people show up if possible. My DH is usually at work, so I keep the item in the garage and I always let my dog out when someone is here looking.

I haven't had any problems with people and have sold or given away a lot of things. I've also furnished my new room addition with furniture I bought on CL and we also found my DD a car there.

Lydia, Thank a Bunch!! Yeah, when you mentioned it is like a newspaper advertisement, it clicked in my brain. I still had the e-bay mentality. I will take your advice. Thanks again!!

mikie, Thank you for your post back to me. So far it hasn't popped up again but I only told it to block instance, not to block it permanently. I would have given it temp access then crossed my fingers that my virus program doesnt pop and say it found a slimy sleazeball. I saw nothing there that even said to give it temporary access. What I finally found out from the recent history in Norton is this. Level: Low, Title: This one time you blocked Microsoft Local Security Authority Shell from accessing your network resources. Status: Blocked. Date: 10/11/2007 12:44:32 AM. The default action was to allow in Norton. Is there anyway for me to unblock this in Norton, or will I have to just wait for it to try to access again? If not then how do I get it to access again, can I get it through Microsoft? How can I correct this mistake? One thing for sure because Norton had it as a low risk, I thought it was the virus. Ugh! thirdfrt!!!

The Pottery Barn system (work table top, lateral file cabinet, 2 3-drawer file cabinets) I need would cost $1500 - there's gotta be a way to either get it cheaper or get better quality for that kinda money! ******* Looking for higher quality/custom built for less money? That's a bit like looking for the Mercedes S-Class at the Toyota Camry price. Its just not going to happen. A recurring theme here on this forum is "More for Less" and I can tell you that 99.99 % of the time thats an impossibility. Here we are looking at a mass-produced (as in thousands of units) combination done by a mass marketer, made in China (where the hourly rate is .50 per hour) made of composite woods and fibers. Realistically the price is beat down as far as you are ever going to get it. This is what the American consumer has been demanding and Pottery Barn has delivered it to you. Custom built for that kind of money? Raw material alone would almost come to $ 1,500 in solid hardwoods that are stain grade, finishing material, hardware for slides, etc. A well-made custom-built unit is going to be closer to $ 5,000, regardless of what part of the country you are in. Nicole...My house is in a state of "on going repair". The three bedrooms are finished with white painted crown molding, baseboards, trim, new windows, and old painted doors. The original white oak floors were exposed, scraped and refinished. I love them. The living room will be tackled this spring. We're refinishing those white oak floors; I've been removing all the old plain oak trim as I wash and repair the walls. The LR and breakfast nook open to the kitchen and I'm having to treat them similar. I don't think I'll have any trim on the new LR windows; if there is it will be white. I have a handcrafted pine writing desk, but it's moving to the sewing room. I built a large pine bookcase 25 years ago; it lives in the den. The breakfast nook has a vintage bistro table with a cast iron base and a light maple top. Everything else in this room will be replaced. The table can be restained, or painted, or covered with a tablecloth. The walls will be some version of sage green, probably. The ceiling has just been painted white with a new ceiling fan and light fixtures. So, maybe I'll sand the cabinet and stain it walnut??? I'm going to have to think about it. I paid $115 for the cabinet. Not a $20 steal like some folks find, but considering our FreeCycle/Craig's List pickings are very slim here on the northern Great American Prairie, and what I would have paid for a press-board, plain, new, cabinet; I'm happy. The kitchen will probably have hickory cabinets; that's not set in stone though.

It seems to me wise for folks who are Christians to be careful about becoming too certain about the circumstances surrounding Christ's return. Let's not forget that the original people who believed in one God and were expecting His Being to come to earth saw the coming, but it was so different from what they were expecting that they said that this wasn't the right one ... ... and they're still expecting a Messiah. Sometimes I feel that the expectations which many Christians have for the Second Coming seem somewhat similar to what the Jews were expecting the first time. Further ... the Romans were a tough lot - you had to be, if you were going to subjugate a major portion of the world ... and keep it subjugated. But their representative in Jerusalem did not see Jesus as threat enough to merit death. Herod, who was a local exercising power under the Romans, and a bit of a skunk, wasn't in favour of killing Him, either. Who was it who insisted that He had to go? That there wasn't room enough in the world for their system and His ... and they knew whose had to be gotten rid of! It was the religious bunch. If Christ were to come in a quiet fashion, as He did before and walked our streets and talked with us ... ... perhaps His ideas and teaching would be so different from what we're used to and accept ... that we would reject Him, as the religious bunch did before. Or perhaps walk by and ignore Him, considering His message ineffectual and of little value in the real world. If Christ were in charge in our communities, nations and the world - they sure would be different places! ole joyful

To sell book, though, I would check out Amazon. I switched to Amazon after selling books on eBay for several years. They do take a commission, but the listing process is super-quick and no photos are involved. They direct-deposit the net proceeds in my bank account.

I don't know about anyone else's Craigslist, but my Craigslist's booksellers are out of touch with reality.

PS: If you list an item on Craigslist, you may find it gets noticed by someone out of your area, who could ask if you'd ship it. This was the case when I sold rototiller tines on Craigslist. They ended up being bought by someone in Utah (I'm in Pennsylvania), who was happy to pay the steep shipping charge. We did the transaction via Paypal.
