Why don't bleach blonds.....

tend their dark roots? That Hasselbeck twit on the View, this morning has a black/dark stripe down her head. It looks terrible. I wonder if she is PG again. I know, Ill get a lot of flack for MY opinion, but as a former hairdresser, I find this unsightly.Before I let my hair go natural Grey, I kept my blond locks pretty. (Crabby) Dottie

Laziness and poor grooming, in my opinion. I used to be a bleach blond but it's too much work (and expensive) to get roots professionally done every 3 weeks.

That bothers me also. Hardly ever see a bleached blonde on TV without the dark roots.

wow renee, those are some very happy plants there. such lushness- looks like england to me!i thought so. cal was too hot for english style gardens,but what do i know? are you in san diego area? i really like, in particular, the framed view type shots.you have an excellent design sense for placing key large bold elements in your vignettes and balancing them well. I think the white walnut tree composition is a killer with all the subtle fascinating green elements of different shapes and textures; very Japanese design-like. Btw, is that moss in the walnut tree and pond photos? it is so intriguing. i've never seen a walnut tree I guess; had no idea they had fantastic white bark like that. grafted, it seems?I also think it's really cool how a photo can often show you a serendipitous design that was unintended (like maybe the opposing curves of the paved edge, the hedge, and the brug.arch?!) A number of your images would make really good Fine Gardening Photo of the Day shots. Share them; it's fun! i'm even going as far as to suggest which shots you might want to submit. I put them below, and maybe i'm cheeky (but i hope you won't think that)but i cropped a bit to highlight the best features of your already very well composed shots. STPP is sodium tripolyphosphate; it's a purer form of the "phosphates" that were removed from detergents and other cleaning products some years ago in order to reduce chances of eutrophication problems in streams, rivers and lakes. Eutrophication occurs when two ingredients are in excess supply in water (nitrogen and phosphorus) and result in an overgrowth of green algae which damages the water body and animals living in it. Nitrogen is the more common excess element and comes mostly from fertilizer run-off (both agricultural, and to a surprisingly large degree from lawns) and from human and animal wastes getting into waterstream. It is hard, both in practical sense and in a political sense since it would require expensive modifications to current sewage treatment and agricultural practices, to reduce the nitrogen load enough to make a big difference in preventing eutrophication. Since the eutrophication process also needs a certain amount of excess phosphorus, it was deemed easier to reduce phosphates introduced by cleaning products (primarily from laundry and dishwashing) into the waste stream. Hence most US states and Western Europe enacted phosphate bans. But not all states did that, and in many states, even those with bans, it is only illegal to sell the phosphates for home laundry, not to buy, possess or use them. So some people elect to use small quantities in their laundry. I have a private sewage system, and live on a large property where I can (and do) control the amount of nitrogen that enters my soil, so for me the improved cleaning is an acceptable trade-off. And I use an extremely minimal amount, certainly less elemental phosphorus goes down my washing machine drains every year than I put on my extensive gardens. (Yes, I have done the math on that and my college training was in plant science so I'm confident of my figures.) For those who use public sewage systems, the phosphorus is generally removed when it is treated, before waste water is discharged. Excess phosphates does drive up the cost of sewage treatment, which of course is paid for by the taxpayers. Many people buy STPP online from stores like the Chemistry Store, though there are other sources in some areas. One needs only a very small amount (I use what I can pinch between two fingers, or about 1 teaspoon per load, and only for a fraction of the loads I do.) A little goes a long way and in small quantities the shipping minimum is often more than the product. It does an excellent job getting whites whiter, particularly at the higher end of temps in the wash liquor. It is less effective if you use cool, or warm water, and so would be an environmental cost with little benefit under those circumstances. Choosing to use it is something one should be especially thoughtful about, so I am not making a blanket recommendation to add it to your washing regimen. Molly~

angelheart7 has a point. We try to describe it in a hundred different ways. Your level of confidence, if you are assertive or go for what you want in life (which was mentioned about nice guys not being aggresive) as well as being TOO aggresive (which someone else mentioned and felt it was a catch22) But, it's really not. The extreme of either is going to be less attractive, and as angelheart7 pointed out, it really does have more to do with that positive energy that you give out that other people can sense. It's not just about women/men relationships either. It's something that any other human can sense about you. Some people call it karma, some call it self fulfilling prophesies, auras, and who knows what else. The reason people say go exercise, is because this tends to increase confidence and energy which means you start acting differently. You walk around feeling good about yourself, looking cheerful and happy which then makes you a more positive person for people to want to be around. It doesn't have to be exercise, it could be any hobby or activity that makes you feel good about life. A few people have made really good points as well in regards to what it means to be a "nice guy". There's a difference between a guy who is nice, respectful, with a lively personality, a love for life, motivation and inspiration.. and a guy who is a rug and will let the girl he is interested in step all over him because he's "nice" and doesn't want to rock the boat. Girls DO like nice guys, but they don't like rugs. I don't know and of you guys who posted personally, so i can't give any specific insight as to why one guy in particular is coming across wrong to women or why they are not interested. It is much much more complicated than simply being "nice" or "not nice". There are so many different definitions of what it means to be nice. And it still depends on what girls you are aiming at as well. What it is they are looking for in a partner, and the body language signals you are giving in return. Maybe being nice is your best quality? Who knows! fyi as an interesting side note, they've done scientific research as well that shows women are attracted to more "cave man" types which are the rugged square faced guys (bad boys) when they are more likely to get pregnant, and attracted to guys with softer more feminine features otherwise. (guys who are more likely to stick around and raise the kids theory). So, it's true there is a lot of chemical stuff going on between men and women as well that we are usually unaware of. More than we realize.

Having bought a bottle and finding it awful I cannot be bothered trying it again. I gave that bottle to a friend who had the same response and she in turn gave it on to somebody else so however many loads there were in that bottle, that bottle has now completely turned off multiple consumers. In business after business, year after year, some "bright spark" (whether a too young product manager or somebody in advertising) takes a "mature" product and decides that it needs to be "changed" for the market and all that happens is that after what looks like an initial expansion, the product steadily loses market share, sometimes they are even driven out of business. They must teach them very poorly in business school because trashing mature products is not representative of innovation. Innovation has its place but messing with your mature products is not that place. I would not be surprised to find that the reason they were messing with it for the US market had nothing to do with the supposed stains but had everything to do with some legal issue with a chemical compound or the labeling.... It is probably the same reason that motivated the manufacturers to cease production of powdered detergents - which was not consumer preference. My personal suspicion is that the powders were not dissolving in the energy efficient required cold water washes and so everything had to be reformulated into a liquid-where the soap is pre-dissolved. The profits on the liquid are huge. The cost to the consumer of all of this is larger still. We are definitely paying more for clothing ( which does not last), for the washing machines (new, improved, and with much shorter lifespans) , and for the soaps and we are getting less. We are really destroying the planet with this kind of thoughtless resource allocation.

I don't like it either..

For me it is a little easier to throw a little Roux Fancyfull on my 'white' part so I don't have a white stripe in my brown hair...8)

I would imagine that time just gets away from people.
I see "roots" everyday. Mostly white or gray ones.
Seems like a lot of peeps nowadays use foiling, and
and that adds more colors and I think it helps with
roots not being so visible.
I doubt that all of these people have poor grooming..... just
possibly the last thing they are thinking about.

It was the in thing for a while (I guess maybe it still is) to have the darker roots... In fact, some lighter colored hair celebs were dying their roots darker to get this look. Didn't bother me after I knew they weren't just being lazy and it was kind of the fashion...

From one Dottie to another, I agree on the roots, disagree on the twit. That show would be boring if it were all liberals. Just because one disagrees with ones opinions doesn't make the other person a twit!

Ha....I thought that was the style now, since I see it so often. What do I know?? I don't watch the show so I can't comment specifically.

I DO like the shadings in various colors that you see a lot these days. Probably expensive to have done??? (foils, is it?)

I have enough problems with keeping the light white/sidewalk gray strip covered up. I have a color stick (which i very hard ti find) that I can rub on it to turn it brown but really!! hate to have to dye just to gett rid of the scalp line. There was a product called couvre or something like tht tthat you could comb in. I see what's her hame is flooding tv with commercials for her get rid of the streak product but very pricey

That is one reason I never colored my hair or try to cover my grey! Way too much trouble.
By the way,it isn't actually the "roots".The roots of the hair are below the scalp.Never could figure out why people called it the roots.LOL My daughter is a beautician and her teacher in cosmetology school would jump on them all the time when they called it the roots.He said it was called "new growth"! LOL
Whatever you call it,it's tacky when not properly attended to!

I still don't think Elizabeth is a twit. She's very black and white and in life, there is a lot of grey. She's very young yet and after living life a little she'll learn about the grey areas.

Dotmom, funny you should mention this as that's the first thing I noticed as EH sat down today. She seems to do that often though and it bugs me. Since she has full access to hair and make-up everyday, you'd think her stylist would do something, but maybe EH likes to take care of it on her own like Bonnie Hunt does.

I know this OT, but what was she talking/crying about when she felt bad for hurting someone's feelings?

Frankly, I think roots on anyone look awful!

Matti5-On the view, Elizabeth made some careless remarks against Erin Andrews wearing skimpy outfits on Dancing with the Stars, and maybe that type of dressing is what got her into trouble (the stalker who videotaped her in her hotel room).

She apologized the next day. Erin Andrews said she cried when she first heard the remarks, saying that Hassleback was blaming the victim (her).

It's been a long time since I colored my hair but how exactly does one avoid 'roots' if you are using any sort of hair color? You can't exactly attack each new millimeter of new growth as it appears. You have to wait for some measure of new growth before it's worthwhile to do a touch-up, no?

Reminds me of waxing hair. I never could understand the benefit of that. Sure, you can be smooth for a while but you have to let the hair grow in long again before waxing.

Are you blonde, Patti? It's easy enough to cover up gray roots with a darker color but being blonde requires bleaching.

I kind of prefer to see a little of the roots showing. I don't care for the look of freshly bleached hair particularly on someone who was never naturally blond. It looks a bit too harsh for my taste.

When there is a little growth showing, it is possible to style the hair so it is less noticeable. I noticed EH reversed skunk stripe wasn't as appearant this morning, her hair was more fluffed up. A few jokes have come top my mind too, Cynic, but I have refrained. LOL Dottie

How about suggesting that they wear a turban when the new growth is showing some??

If they're living in town, it could be called an "urban turban", right?

Some of us don't have hardly enough up there to get fussed up about what gradations of colour there may be 'tween the scalp and the far end.

ole joyful ... some gray mixed in with the dark - same all the way from end to end (I think - don't see qas well as I usta, either).

I think it is sad that we (and I include myself) can make jokes and sarcasms about someone based on the color of their hair,or because they may not think the same way we think,or because they are outspoken about their beliefs,or because they didn't put their brain in gear before they opened their mouth!

I honestly think it is the current look, but I still think it looks awful. I also hate the current look of several days beard growth on men, even at really nice places and occasions. My older son does that--ugh! At least he shaves for special events.

My younger son says he does not shave on weekends as his face hurts from the shaving and he likes to let his skin recuperate. Wish a knew of a good safety razor product for him.

My dark "new growth" is showing and I'm too busy to get it redone right now. I'm glad I'm not around some of you who would think I was lazy or had "poor grooming". I have about 3 or 4 different colors going right now, including gray but I have stuff to do, like paint a bedroom and move a bunch of crap out of my way.

As far as the twit comment, I think all the other women on The View are twits too, but that's just my opinion.

LOL kathsgrdn, I totally agree with you. I have a stripe showing right now, but have to wait a couple more days before going one color again. I'm NOT blonde, but my hair is clean and styled, but some things take priority over my hair.

I've heard similar comments about not re-painting nails or putting polish on toes. Things like this simply don't bother me. When I was in high school, I did my nails every day to match my clothes. Now with laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc., I don't have time to repaint every time I chip a nail. The last time I had a professional manicure, I ruined it by working in my garden.
